Did you all know that Matt arrived home from active duty just before driving down to WDW with his wife Cheryl?

What I learned was he arrived home, unpacked his bags, and repacked them, then they hit the road and drove to WDW.

He was out there cheering everyone on Saturday at the first overpass, and then at the next to last overpass. You couldn't miss him in his Mickey Sorcerer light hat, and Mickey gloves, oh and his WISH shirt.

It was a last minute decision to run the marathon as a training run. He's doing the Houston Marathon this upcoming weekend.

His plan was to run his regular pace for 8 miles, then stop, and go back to help other WISHers along the way. From what I read, he helped and inspired a lot of people during the race.

He finished the race just before the cut-off, making sure he got his medal.

So, three cheers for ThunderMatt and Cheryl. You both went beyond the call of duty.

Have a great race on Sunday Matt, we're all cheering for you buddy :cheer2:.

I know some of you were wanting to track me in Houston and see how it goes, so here's the info:

Matthew Wilson (27, Navarre)

The checks are at 10k, 21k (half), 30k, and the finish. My primary goal is sub 4:22 (exactly 10 min per mile pace), with checks of 1:02, 2:11, and 3:06 respectively. Of course my secondary goal is a PR, which only requires going sub 5:31 (slight difference there eh? Over an hour!). I recovered pretty well from Disney but that was a lot of pounding and using walking muscles I wasn't used to, so we'll see! Planning to go out with the 4:15 pace balloons and see how long I can stick with them...

It also appears that on the site you'll be able to log on and track me on an actual map as I move through the course, pretty neat! Wonder if they have GPS in their chips or something...

NOTE: I am in the blue wave which is actually the SECOND of two waves. The first is at 0700, the second should be approximately 10 minutes afterward. All times are CENTRAL, and I expect to be done around 11:30am CST if things go well.

It's easy to chEAR for everyone else, now the real panicing begins :scared1: Cheryl will be there with bells on though, so no worries!

As for the weather (one of the main reasons for choosing this race) the REALLY cold lows seem to have taken a one day hiatus for the marathon:

Sat night Jan 17 Low: 50 Realfeel: 47, mostly cloudy with a bit of rain
Sun Jan 18 High: 64 Realfeel 64, A passing shower in the morning; otherwise, clouds giving way to some sun

I could do without the water from the sky, but temps look good!

BTW, I see other WISHers will be there, I'll be sporting my green, if you see me say HEY!

Good luck, everyone and Matt Hope you get your PR and run 4:20. Your "virtual WISH scream team" will be tracking your progress.

Maura

(Who will now HAVE to show up at WDW next year, just so that I can get cheered on by Matt!)

Ok Matt, you just answered my burning question on how you beat me at DL last year. You're 15 years younger than me. :rotfl2:

Quick blurb from the hotel, will add a report later after I return home:

Houston Marathon: 4:41:54

About 20 minutes off what I was shooting for, and what I was on pace for at the 30k time check with 8 miles to go, just prior to an epic implosion around mile 20. :sad2:

HOWEVER, a PR by almost 50 minutes. :cheer2:

More later!

Yeah!!!! Matt :wizard: !!! Our WISH team Cheerleader!!!:cool1: :thumbsup2

WOW that is awesome and I am sooooo Happy for you!!!!:cheer2:

Have a safe trip home!

Hi there fellow WISHers, and thanks for the support!

Here is my race report for the Houston Aramco Half Marathon

Today worked out to a generally successful run of the half marathon distance for me. I ran 2:37:11--slightly slower than I had hoped, but I am in no way disappointed with the time.

I have these overall observations:
1. This was my third best time at this distance, and less than 4 minutes off my PR time.
2. Today's weather was pretty good, although the humidity seemed high and it was definitely 10 - 15 degrees warmer (mid 60's) than the previous night's weather forecast (low 50's) during much of the race.
3. The knee injury that I had been nursing came somewhat into play during the run. The knee was a bit stiff at most times, and especially after the race; however, I can't say that my knee slowed me down much. I think I was more slowed down by the plethora of people walking several abreast who couldn't have done a better job of blocking the path had they tried. I am not bashing walkers/run-walkers, but please don't block the path of other runners trying to run. I, for one, look back and try to pull over to a safe spot when I walk as a courtesy to others.
4. Local race support was outstanding, perhaps the best I have seen--even surpassing the San Antonio Rock 'n Roll event last November. I could feel the energy pick me up at times.
5. I had hoped to run with one of my friends, but we never got together before the start. I held back to near the start to try to find her, figuring that if I missed her I might see her as I ran past. In the end we never saw each other until well after the race. It turns out she stayed even farther back looking for me, so I never ran past her. In the end I outran her by about 8 minutes.
6. I ran a negative split by about 12 seconds per mile for the race.

After a small rest period, I can look forward to running the Austin Half Marathon next month--28 days away as I write this. Hopefully, I can get my knee to heal up to unlock a sub-2:30 effort at that event.

Most of all, I had a blast out there today!

Way to go tiberius!!!:thumbsup2 :cheer2:

Great job and a good race report.:cool1:

Way to go on your PR Matt.

Damn you, beat me again. LOL, I need a time handicap against you. 15 years, so that's 2 minutes a year, or 30 minutes head start. :rotfl2:

Congrats on the PR Matt :cheer2:

Sorry to hear about your troubles at mile 20, but 2 marathons in 2 weeks is something to be proud of. Congrats again and thanks for your company during WDW. :thumbsup2

Way to go, Matt! I tracked you for the race and you started out really fast--yikes, was that the plan? Congrats on the PR.

Numbers up front as always!

Chevron Houston Marathon on 18 Jan 2009

Old Lifetime Marathon PR: 5:31:06
New Lifetime Marathon PR: 4:41:56 :cheer2:
Improvement: 49:10 :cool1:

Pace: 10:45 min per mile, 5.6mph
Place: 3193/5396
Gender: 2275/3502
Age Group: 224/306

The other numbers they give on the site are pretty elaborate, like my speed per 10 clicks: 6.2, 6.1, 5.9, 4.6. Also the fact I was at mile 12 when the male winner finished, at 13.5 when the female winner finished, and at 25 when the "average" runner finished.

My splits (goal pace 9:41 for a 4:22:00):
10:11, 9:14, 9:14, 9:25, 9:34, 9:30, 9:32, 9:33, 9:42, 9:45, 9:18, 9:58, 10:10, 9:50, 10:20, 9:49, 9:53, 10:26, 10:28, 10:15, 11:59, 14:43, 13:21, 13:15, 14:41, 11:56, 5:45 (.55 on Garmin)

No rocket scientist required here to figure out how it went!

I actually ran with the 4:15 pacers for the first 12 miles or so, which is a bit entertaining due to the huge variety of splits. The first mile ended up slow due to crowding, so they decided to make up the difference all during the second mile. Then for unknown reasons they held close to that fast pace for two more miles, and didn't actually run a mile at the intended pace until mile 9. They stuck with it for two miles then sped it up again for mile 11 over thirty seconds faster than a normal split. I'm not blaming them for me not being smart enough to stick to the pace I thought I could maintain for the whole race, but it just showed me you have to be willing and able to run your own race if the pacer is doing their own thing.

I felt pretty solid right up through about mile 17. This was way over on the backside of the course and there was one more mile before I turned for home. Things started tightening up a bit and the sun was out full force, although it was still only in the low 70s. Not a cloud in the sky but there was a good breeze. I was able to hang on to close to my planned pace for miles 18-20, but at 20 I mentally knew the wheels had fallen off and my HR went up above 170 and stayed there, which is my "danger zone" that I simply cannot maintain for any lengthy amount of time that late in a race. I'm not really sure what to point to that caused the implosion of epic proportions that took place for the remainder, but I suspect its a combination of many things. I'm still not getting enough salt in during a full marathon, as evidenced by the massive layer of it that was caked on my face afterwards. Although I didn't cramp all that much, just overall tightness was probably a result of going no longer than 18 miles in training, and then the minor concept of having put another 26.2 miles on my legs last weekend for my "taper". :rolleyes1

The rest of the race was what is becoming an all too familiar exercise in pain management. A lot of walking, and a lot of random jogging intervals, mostly on downhills and some flats. Looking at the splits they really don't look as bad as they felt, and I was simply shocked that I was still able to cut so much time off my PR. The wind at our back helped out on the way back in, and just some sort of random underpass/overpass quick downhill/uphills to use different muscle groups helped.

Spectator help was all over the place, especially during the first half since the half marathon was on the same course. Never saw the other WISHers or heard anyone yellin at me, but sounds like they had good races also.

I tell ya during miles 22-24 I was certainly internally giggling, as I thought of the fact that many of the WISHers I ran/walked with last weekend were probably feeling just like I was at that point. It was impossible for me to think about giving up knowing I had to follow my own rules and "push through those last few."

So now since you read all this other stuff you can now be rewarded and instantly transport yourself to the finish line yesterday to watch me cross the line:

Watch MATT Finish!

Disclaimer: I jogged it in but certainly wasn't feeling all that "energetic" by the end. They weighed us before and after, even while drinking a few gallons and taking 8 gels, a banana, some graham crackers, and various other stuff out on the course I lost 5 full pounds! My hand gestures were 4 fingers for the first time finishing in 4 hours and something.

All in all, I'm doing my best to ignore what my time goal was and just listen to the words "Lifetime PR." :hyper: It's kind of bizarre to think of it as beating myself by like, FIVE MILES?!?

And now, a couple days off, and its back on the bike and into some serious training, easy at first but then pilin on the hours, as that Ironman in April is beginning to loom quite largely in the background, with only 88 days to go according to my desktop counter. :scared:

Matt, all I can say is that you totally ROCK! Congratulations on your PR. I am looking at doing another Half next month and I am going to try to PR, if I get to do it.

I know you are probably tired of hearing it but your overwhelming enthusiasm during the Donald, I was able to push thru any of pain that I may have been experiencing. Even though I didn't have a WISH shirt on (I was wearing my hat), it seemed like you were encouraging me when I was going under the overpass. You are definitely one in a million.

Congratulations again!!
Bryan:thumbsup2 :cool1:
