Best of luck to all the WISHers out there this weekend. Stay hydrated!!!!

Well, DS and I did do the RftC -- and, as usual, we scored tons of free stuff. The coolest thing he got was a John Deer "Gator" hat with a grinning gator on the brim and gator tail on the back. Awesome hat -- and my DH is now sorry he was officiating at a swim meet so he couldn't score one himself. ;)

We got pink backpacks and frisbees and scarfs and tons of chapstick and sunscreen and more -- The sponsors seem to try to outdo each other with giveaways, which is one reason I wanted DS to do this race. Oddly, his foot (which had only been out of a "boot" [for a fracture] since last week) never bothered him, but he did complain about his back -- between his shoulder blades -- which bothers me a little because he usually enjoys these races so much and seems to have so much energy above and beyond the 5K requirements. Despite his obvious discomfort, though, he finished strong. I need to help him figure out what happened so he can enjoy his next race again. It's very puzzling.

Post-race, we enjoyed the Kidzone, where he got to play a race simulation video game built into a race car -- and he won, so he was very happy. I scored sample packs of Smuckers natural peanut butter and low sugar fruit spread. He also got to play in the Tumblebus -- a school bus set up inside with all sorts of tumblemats and the like. Right up a 9-yr-old's alley.

He's now sporting brand new New Balances -- I figure anyone who's done three 5Ks deserves "real" running shoes (and these were on sale). I took him to the local running shoe store where they watched him run and everything, so I think he's set for the next 3-6 months. (Darn those growing kids!)

Hope everyone else enjoyed their races today as well. I saw WISHer Stacie for a few seconds, but DS and I had to pick up our chips and get in the portapotty line, so I didn't even get to visit. Bummer!

Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow too!

Way to go Wendy. Glad you were able to score lots of stuff. We have found the RftC race in Orlando is about the same. We have several bags that Ford has given out through the years.

I did my first 5K ever today! It was a local race to support our Youth Center. I finished in 37:40 which was better than I was anticipating. It was a fantastic experience and I kept thinking about how energizing it was to be a part of something like this and how doing the Disney Half in January is probably going to be that to the nth degree with all the excitement and music and characters. That stuff really gets your adrenaline flowing! I've been on a high all day. 38 years old, just started running this year and I did it!

Wendy, great job on the 5km and very happy to hear you got fab goodies. Hope you get DSs back sorted, i'm so impressed that he managed a 5km 1 week out of a boot. :cool1:

I just saw Allyson's post- congratulations on making your first 5km. I hope you are so so proud of yourself. This will quite possibly be the first of many and i'm so pleased you had a great time.

Good luck everyone else out there today and tomorrow. WISHing you all a fantastic race

Congratulations! It is an awesome feeling, isn't it? And good for you for doing better than you expected! You did marvelously -- on to Disney!

I also did the Race for the Cure. They announced as we were lining up that we had over 25,000 participants with over $2,000,000 raised, and are now the largest Komen affiliate in the country! Saw Stacie before the race as well, and actually saw Wendy in the portapotty line line too, but didn't get a chance to say hello. Got tons of comments on my WISH shirt though!

Was running with a fellow Galloway member, and we went out way too fast. Looked at my watch at the end of the first mile and thought "uh-oh!" By the end of the second mile had nothing left, but Mary kept coaxing me on - there's a nasty hill near the end of the course that she's always had to walk and she was determined to run it this year, so I gathered all I had and ran it with her. Finished in 35:16 - round one over!

Since we were using this for our 10 mile LR, immediately went back to the start and began the 2nd race (Women's Recreational Run/Walk). Opted to do R3/W1 intervals, and slowed it way down. Still gave out of energy after mile 2, but ran up "Mary's hill" even though she wasn't doing this race. Finished round 2 in 37:30.

Had about a 30:00 break before the 3rd race started - not a good thing. Walked around and looked at all the free stuff, but decided I was too tired to care! Picked up the Ford bandana and carried it with me for the last race and grabbed a bagel, then went to the start line, which by now was over a quarter mile back from the actual start. This was the Open Recreational Run/Walk, and I'm at the back of the pack. Took half the race before I could run even if I wanted to, so I walked, trying to keep a pace that would keep me ahead of the Disney sweepers! Finished mile 1 in 15:44, then finally got a few openings and jogged some, so round 3 ended in 46:14.

Long walk to the buses back to the parking lot, and I'm exhausted, knowing that no one else is really tired, since most of them have just run 3 miles. I've pretty much run a half marathon, when you figure in all the walking back to the start! But I can say I ran 3 5K's in one day, although I doubt I'll ever try that again.

Jackie

Wendy - Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello. I think I saw you in the parking lot, then all 3 WISHers were in the portapotty line at the same time, but it was hard to get a chance to chat. Glad DS had fun - and brave mom for buying real running shoes when the feet are growing this fast!

Allyson - Great job on your first 5K! Now it's real! And that's a great time for your first attempt. You're gonna do wonderful in January - and absolutely love the experience.

Good for you, Jackie! I don't think I'd have wanted to try that in June in NC -- You are one brave lady! Good for you for meeting the challenge of the hill! Thanks for the kind words about my DS. So sorry I didn't see you. Next race, hopefully!

Great job everyone who did their races today!!!

Good luck to those who have races tomorrow!!!

GO WISH TEAM!!:yay:

Good job WISH Team!

Wendy, Good for you for doing this event. I hope DS has a good experience real soon. I'm sure that the new shoes will make it all better. New shoes always help me run faster and jump higher!

Allyson, congratulations on your first event!
I love your enthusiasm and know that you will have such fun in January!

Jackie, wow! You did an amazing job today. Wow!

Great job everyone!!

Our 8K was canceled today due to severe weather. Winds picked up terribly, sky turning black, lightening. Nothing you want to be out in.

Hoping weather improves this afternoon so we can get out on our own.

Thanks for the encouragement. Here is my first-ever race report!

My race was the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham Night Run and Fun, which was 4 miles. I learned at the start that this was their inaugural year. I thought that was kind of cool, since it was my very first race as well!

My husband, 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son got me to the starting line with plenty of time to spare. I was glad to not have to rush, but boy, was I antsy waiting for the start, especially after my family left me to go find a place to cheer from. There were 130 runners and it was hard not to feel intimidated by the super-fit, super-trim elite in the pack. I headed to the back to get as far away from them as possible.

The skies were threatening before the start and there was some thunder and lightning in the distance, but since the worst of it wasn't near us, we were able to start on time. We started off in a light drizzle, to the absolute dismay of the other first-time racer next to me who was wearing full makeup. (What was up with that? Even I knew better!) I was just thankful that the heat and humidity weren't too bad -- I'd really been dreading those conditions.

I started up the Week 7 Couch to 5K podcast and hit my Nike Plus a few seconds late -- too much was going on to remember to hit the stupid button! I'd planned to walk the first 5 minutes, run for my mandated 25, and then walk the rest. Since I'm only in Week 7, my longest run so far was only 2.57 miles -- and that counted 10 minutes of warm-up and cool-down walking -- so I knew better than to try to be a hero and run the whole thing. But then I saw my family for the first time on the course and wanted to run past them, so I broke into my run after only 3.5 minutes.

My kids were the best "pit crew;" one handed me a Gatorade sippy bottle and the other waited a few yards behind to take the bottle back from me. Thank goodness for that, as I soon learned that I am HORRIBLE at drinking out of paper cups while on the move!

The course had a few rolling hills, which was new for this track-or-treadmill-at-zero-incline C25K'er. I was really proud that I didn't slow down to walk the first few hills; quite a few people around me did, but I wanted to keep running until my 25-minute mark had passed. My family did another Gatorade relay for me just before the 2-mile mark and a third right at that magic 25-minute (really 26.5 minutes since I'd started early) point. I started walking immediately after the podcast said I could and it was a good thing I did. There was a long, gradual hill that would have wiped me out if I'd tried to keep running. The best part was that the course was mostly downhill from the third mile marker on. I tried to run from that point to the finish, but I was pretty tired by then. My family did one more Gatorade relay at the 3.5-mile mark, and I slowed to a walk when I saw them. I wanted to save just a bit for the finish and am proud to say I was able to run in and finish strong.

My goal time had been 1 hour because I obsess over 15-minute miles due to my fear of getting swept at Race for the Taste, and I was thrilled to cross the finish line at 53:00. A personal record (by default, since it was the longest distance I've ever gone, but a PR nonetheless), I was not the Dead Last Finisher, and I beat my target time = victory on all 3 fronts!

I didn't see where the actual finish line was and the volunteer in the chute had to tear my tag off for me and ended up taking my number as well, so it wasn't exactly a glamorous finish. Whoops. I finally remembered to turn off my Nike Plus about 6 minutes later -- it's amazing how distracted I was by the thrill of finishing.

The after-party was great. Everyone wore glow necklaces, there were inflatables for the kids, and a terrific band was playing. It was so nice that there was something for my "pit crew" to enjoy and it made for a fun family night out. I can't wait to race again, and I'm even more stoked to do RftT now!

So...Matt, me, My SIL, Her Sister and Matt's mom and dad did the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday in Raleigh. We all decided to sign up for the competitive one since 1) I wanted an official time and 2) It's NC, It's June and It's HOT! 7am is a much better start time than the other options.

Before the race I saw Jackie and Wendy and spoke them quickly before the race started. It was nice to see fellow WISHers there! :thumbsup2 It was also cool to see all the pinks shirts. All those in the pink shirts were breast cancer survivors. It was very touching.

Overall it went well. I did NOT PR as I hoped. My previous time was 42:58 but this one was 43:38. It was hot and humid and there were hills. Not huge hills, but hills none the less. I don't train for hills so I was stuggling just a bit and knew in the first mile I would not PR. I also forgot my knee brace. I brought it with me, but left it in the car. We had to take a shuttle from the local arena (where the Carolina Hurricanes play...go Canes!) to the College Campus where the race was held (10min ride) and I really didn't have time to go back and get it. ugh.

After the race, I iced the knee front and back and then we headed over to Race City to stop by the vendor tents and pick up lots of goodies. This was very cool as none of the races I've done before had an area like this. We got lots of cool stuff!

The race brought in close to 25,000 partipants and raised over 2 million dollars (I think).

My knee fared ok and hasn't really bothered me. It was a but sore/still on Saturday night, but since has been ok. Today, by quads and my calves are sore--especially my calves! Those Hills!

Here's a pic after the race...
