I'll be running a 5 mile race on Saturday for breast cancer awareness. It's called the Fresh Burst 5 miler. 100% of the registration fees are going to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

Fresh Burst 5 miler in Litiz PA. What a great local race! I am happy to say it was well worth the $25.00 registration fee.

The weather was fairly nice. A little humidity in the air, but the temps were reasonable. The registration was a little high for me, and I wasn't in a 'racing' spirit since I ran a 9 miler the day before.......but, the race sponsered by Johnson and Johnson, was a charity event supporting breast cancer. So, I ponied up the $25.00 bucks........and received probably the best 'goodie' bag ever invented. The bag included full sized lotions, spray sun tan lotion, mouth wash, facial dermal abrasion kit, Neosporin, hand gel cleaner, etc....... WOW, what a great bag of stuff!

The sponsers really put out a spread. Turkey Hill had many different types of iced tea, plenty of water bottles, etc before the race started.

The race was fairly flat with just a few rolling hills, water stops at every mile marker. They had someone calling splits at every mile marker. And, the actually had chip timing for our finish time!

They had iced towels at the end with (again) plenty of water and iced tea. Subway was there with free sandwiches, Turkey Hill had the duetto (ice with ice cream), and Rita's with free ice! It was awesome!

The had money awards for the first three finishers for men and women. They also had a 5K walker event that had money prizes too! The bad thing was that many of the finishers ran most of the event! The walkers were really mad about that!

Anyway.......it was a great race!

Beth

Beth: Sounds like it went great and like you said awesome goody bag!!

I just have to add that I LOVE Iced towellets thingys at the end of a race!!! Just love them.

CONGRATs!!

Hey everyone!

My race on Saturday went excellent! The initial registration was good and it had the cutest race shirt ever. (There's a Kangaroo involved). Weather was nice, mid-seventies, overcast, with a light mist.

I also set a new personal record. I hit mile 1 at roughly 7:45, mile 2 at just past 16:30, mile three at roughly 25:45, and finished at 26:30. There was a big hill in the race right near the end of mile two which explains the bit of a slow down. Anyway I finished 1st in my age group, 7th out of the women, and 50th out of 120 participants. In less than a month I've knocked over 6 minutes off my time. The after race was kind of a disaster. They kept forgetting to replenish the water and gatorade. THe microphone died prior to awards and they couldn't get the medals untangled. I was so excited that none of that mattered.

Great job guys! Those sound like two super races (and the one in Lititz is close enough to me that I might consider driving out there next year)!

Hi fellow WISHers!

I just got back from Texas where DH, Steve, and I participated in a bike ride in Cleburne called the Tour de Goatneck. I rode the 27 mile route with a friend and Steve did the 41 mile route. The course was challenging for me as it was very hilly.

On our 27-miler, there were 3 rest stops. That's a lot for that short of distance. Each one had a theme as well. They were all fantastic. This was one of the best bike events that I have participated in. All of the volunteers were super friendly and they had the best stocked water-stops of any race I've been in.

My favorite stop was the final stop - the Luau. Fans, misters and chairs were provided as well as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pickles, bananas, oranges, several kinds of chocolates, Bugle chips (anyone remember those from way back ;) ), cookies, doughnuts and ice-cold, wet sponges. And, the volunteers refilled our water bottles with ice if we wanted. It was wonderful. Cindy and I took our time at the water stops (and on the course). I think this is the first race that I actually gained some weight. :rolleyes1

At the finish of the race, a lot of the same food was provided that we had at our water stops. In addition, big slices of nice, cold watermelon were available. I'm not much of a watermelon eater but it was really good that day, especially with the temps in the 90s by the time I finished. Also, for a small fee, made to order smoothies were available complete with protein powder or other supplements.

I really enjoyed the Tour de Goatneck and highly recommend it to any and all of our TX and surrounding area WISHers!

Beth, good job. It sounds like a good event.

wellesleyprincess, (Sorry I don't see your name on our Team roster) Great job! Congratulations. Sounds like it was a good event.

Susie, good job on this event! Way to go and that you thought it was a short ride. Wow! Lovely.

Hi Wishers !
Here is a first "race report" from Tiggerspal222..

Race report for the Sam's Club Waterfall Glen Xtreme10

The race is a unpaved trail race through a forest preserve. It is a 9.6 mile loop, with added distance to round it out to 10 miles. The forest preserve is beautiful, and the trail is challenging. There is a hill called “Big Bertha” about 2.5 miles into this course, that gains 125 feet in just over a half mile.
Since we live only about 20 minutes from the Preserve, we have ridden our bikes and hiked there in the past. We hadn't been there in a few years when I registered for this event, so we scheduled a few runs/walks over the preceding weeks to get re-acclimated. It is a very good thing that we did.
My first full circuit out there was opposite to the direction the race goes, and I went DOWN “Big Bertha”, not up. I turned in a respectable (for me) 1:58. The next weekend, I did it in the other direction, and encountered Bertha in all her glory, turned in a better time, too with 1:48 for 9.5 miles.
Race day came last Saturday, and I was a little nervous about the run. I was very glad I had pre-run the course, but wasn't sure I'd be anything better than last place. I know that really doesn't matter, but...
The race is touted as having the best goody-bags and the best food of any chicago-area event. It seemed to be pretty good when I checked in. There were large commercial grills being set up, a gatorade tent, a place to get lipton tea and monster drinks. Hamburgers and sausages were starting to be grilled and it looked like a party, including a giant Budweiser tent with the promise of Free Beer !.
Like almost any event, it started a little late, and with a rather odd start lineup.
Bib colors were assigned according to how fast you said you were when you registered. I was, of course, in the last group, the Sub, sub, sub-elite. Each group had a “Cross-Country” style start, lined up at the woodline and running across a meadow to a bottleneck to get on the actual trail. Each group started out about 4 minutes behind the previous, faster group. We were repeatedly admonished to start ONLY with our own group, with NO mixing of colors. I suppose you would have to be pretty damn good to make up the 4 minute lead and mingle with the last of the previous group, but they still hammered that point home, over the PA, again, and again, and again.
So, the gun fired and my group started out, across the meadow, and into the bottleneck. I found a few like-paced people to start with and kept to a comfortable pace. First 2 miles went well, very humid, but not unbearable given the trees shading the trail. We hit Bertha at 2.5 and I powered partway up, then speed-walked up the remainder. Lately I have been walking at a 12:30-13:00 pace when I concentrate on form, so I was able to roll up the grade and not lose much time. As it leveled off, I recovered and picked up to a jog again, then cycled through my walk/run intervals. Given the humidity at the start 85% at 7AM, I brought my amphipod belt and 1 bottle, and 2 gu's. I took water at the first water stop, took it again at the stop after Bertha, and then at the third stop, No Cups. They were already out of cups. Sam's club is the title sponsor, and they run out of cups. Sheesh! Very glad I had my 'pod, I bypassed the cup-less water stop, kept plugging along, doing my usual “I pass you, you pass me” game with some other folks.Got to next water stop, no cups. I opened up my 'Pod bottle, had it filled from a jug, and scooted on. The rest of the trail isn't bad, very slight grades and nicely shaded path. There was some traffic to contend with, as they did not close the course for the event. Yes, there were bikes, and baby strollers, and groups of meandering people to dodge as we competed. Such Fun!! I did pretty well all told, considering the heat and the fact that it is the longest distance I have ever competed at. Finished up at 1:55:28. Under the 2 hours I alotted myself, and well under the limit enforced for the event. And I found out that more than 60 people were still behind me, out of a field of over 600.
When I crossed the finish, I was pleased with my time, and wandered over to partake of some gatorade and maybe a sausage or burger or 3.. I was able to get the sausage, no prob, but Gatorade, NOPE, “Sorry, we're out”. Beer ? “Nope, sorry, we're out”. No electrolytes available at all. There were skids of water, and we were each handed a bottle as we crossed the finish, and there were skids of bottles of lipton teas.. But not what I was looking for. The gatorade was NEEDED, the beer woulda been nice after a sausage, and before a burger..But,alas, nothing but water or diet tea.Oddly, there was a tent representing the Atkins diet food people.. Hmm, no carbs? Just what runners want and need.. Never did see any kind of crowd around that tent.
Needless to say, I wasn't impressed with the event.. Not enough cups for water stops, running out of other drinks.. I was impressed with the volunteers, though. They were fantastic, enthusiastic and encouraging.
In summation, I think I will continue to use this trail as a training run, given it's challenges that give an advantage on flat courses, but I will not do this particular event again.

I'm just now getting to reading these RRs--sorry I fell behind!

Beth: The Fresh Burst 5 miler sounds like a great event, even with the high registration fee. ($25? Wow.) Good cause; great goodie bag (full sizes!); lot of hydration and food (Rita's ice, mmmm), and iced towels; split updates; and a fast course. I'd definitely consider that race if I were closer. Boo to the walkers who ran, though. And you did this race after a 9 miler? :worship:

Jennifer: Another great race for you. I keep reading about your progress on the weekly thread with a little bit of envy but even more happiness for you! (6 minutes shaved off your time over the course of a month. Wow.) Congratulations on the speedy PR AND for finishing 1st in your AG. I'm sorry the post-race was so disorganized but, like you, I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared.

Susie: Tour de Goatneck? The name alone makes it worth considering. Congratulations on completing 27 miles of a hilly course (and woo hoo to your friend for doing it with you, and to Steve for his 41 miles). Themed rest stops are such a cool idea, and the Luau sounds positively decadent.
I think this is the first race that I actually gained some weight.
:rotfl2: And I can see that, given your description. Why, the watermelon and made-to-order smoothies would be enough to do me in. What a great, fun event. I'm glad you told us about it. :cool1:

tiggerspal222: Yay for your first RR! The Sam's Club Waterfall Glen Xtreme10 sounds both beautiful and challenging. It must be cool to be acclimated to and familiar with the route, and the preserve certainly deserves repeated visits from the sound of it. Smart strategy, traveling 'Big Bertha' both ways and getting a sense of your potential time. I'm not sure if the event has the best goody bags/food of the Chicago area (I wouldn't know), but they certainly seem elaborate.

The Sub, sub, sub-elite group? Hah! I prefer to think of us as the "getting our money's worth" group. It seems like the race tried to keep everything pretty tightly organized with the start, so I'm surprised they ran out of cups on the course. (Especially because of the Sam's Club sponsorship.) Sheesh is right! Your RR is a good example of why we should always be prepared with our own hydration and fueling, even at a race. And no Gatorade at the end? Inexcusable. Congratulations for finishing under all those conditions (heat, lack of cups, traffic), under your goal time and ahead of many others! :thumbsup2

Hi Beth!

I am planning on running this for the first time this year...I see this was from a few years ago - do you still run it? is it still as nice in years past? I'm glad to know that it was mostly flat :goodvibes
