Race Reports/Encouragement/Kudos for April 5th and 6th!

Ed, sorry about the event being canceled.

Scott, Wow! You went and finished with all that going on. Sorry you were sick. Congrats on your finish.

Look forward to the rest of the reports.

Good luck to those going out tomorrow.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

Ed: sorry your race was cancelled.

Scott: Good job sticking it out. Congrats on making your goal. I love that you're ready to run it again.

Cindy

Oh ed, so sorry your race was cancelled. That's bad enough, but to reschedule when you can't make it is just mean.

Scott- my goodness was a tough day. So very impressed that you managed to carry on at all, you did great.

Hope all our other lovely WISHers are having a great racing weekend :goodvibes

Congrats to everyone who went out today with the courage to start.:cheer2:

Here is my long report:

This morning was the Hartford, CT 1/4 marathon. It was 6.554 miles of "rolling" hills. In all fairness, I had run the course before so I knew what I was getting into. There was one really big hill and lots of other ups and downs. The course was two loops around a reservoir and was a real pretty run.

My goal was to run 59.59. I figured that with a 10K PR of 56 and change, that would be good. That would also be about a 9:10 pace for the course.

The first mile was way too quick. I went through the mile mark at 8:17 and actually said, "Oh ****", out loud. Even with a shorter race, starting out that quickly could spell trouble. The second mile was where the big hill was. I ran up it and passed a few people on the hill. The good news was that by the 1.5 mile mark, the course was either pretty much flat or down hill. I went through the two mile mark in 17:21 which must have been a 9:04 mile. That was better as far as pace goes but still, with the hill was probably too fast. I cruised down the hill on the otherside and passed the 5K mark at 27 minutes.

That was about where I wanted to be but I felt like ****. I have a head cold and some gastric issues. Perhaps even running today was asking a little much. I passed the finish line without getting lapped which was another goal. I stopped for some water that my girlfriend was holding because the water they had on the course doesn't work with me. Mile 4 I felt like I got back on pace a little . I ran that in just over 9 minutes so the pace was again fine. Mile 5 had the big hill again. My plan all along was to walk that hill. I did but didn't lose much because my fast walk was almost as quick as their slow hill run. After I got to the top, I ran for a bit and did something I have not done before in a race.

I quit. My stomach was churning and my head hurt. My pace was slowing and it was getting hot. I said, "screw it, I'll walk it in". The good news was that after a few minutes, I felt a little better and decided I could jog it in. I picked up the pace as the big down hill approached. When I saw that I had 13 minutes to run the last 1.55 miles, I figured that I could still do it. What's 13 minutes of misery? Well, to make a long story short, I did it. I hammered the last 1.55 miles and finished the race in 59:41 for a 9:07 pace. I then promptly went behind a structure and tried to puke. I could only muster some foam the the puking sensation went away.

I was 215 out of 311 (sometimes you show up and finish in the top 1/4 and sometimes the good runners show up and you finish in the botton 1/3.

I was 10 out of 19 in the clydesdale divison. That pissed me off because there was no one there heavier than I was. No one that I saw anyway. I think they used the 190 weight class. Also, there were no scales so who knows.

The post race food was very good. Lots of sweets though.

Overall, It was a good race. If I wasn't suck a wussy, it would have been better but I can't blame the race for that. I'd do it again.

Oh, man!!! I drove past the reservoir yesterday and was cursing DH for having to work - causing me to miss that race!! I came to this thread just to see if there was anyone that ran that race!

DH and I studied at the UConn Health Center, so we were at the reservoir all the time. That was in my prerunning days so it would have been a major mental victory for me to run there!

I think you did great - and rest assured if I had been there that's just one more person that you would have beaten to the finish!!:cool1:

I snuck out over to Tallahassee to do the TOSRV (Tour of Springtime Rural Vistas). I know it wasn't on the schedule Anne, I tend to just up and do these things with little planning!

It was a two day event, with metric and full century options both days. Still not having all that much experience with group rides I just went with the flatter day one metric. Went pretty well, it ended up being a little longer (aren't they always?) so I ended up with 67 miles ridden in under 4 hours. Might do a tri next weekend, might not... Ooh but the weekend after that I'm definitely signed up for one, so time to go put that on the schedule before Anne comes after me with a sharp stick! ;)

Ed - that stinks! :sad2:

Scott - fabulous!!!!
Well, being sick was not, but getting your goal - :thumbsup2

Just back from Great Bay...quick drive-by report:
Met Lisa & Angie (and families) before the race.
Chad finished in 2:00:53!!!! :woohoo:
Me & Angie FINISHED and we were not DLF!!! :rotfl:

I am so proud of Angie. She was having a terrible time with blisters yet again. I talked her ear off at times. I went a little ahead of her at times (to give her a break from my jabber mouth  ). She plugged through in ALOT of pain. And she did it! :goodvibes

Gotta run. Chinese food is calling my name... :rolleyes1

Not a racer today, but I did spend 8 hours at the Martian Marathon today--my first race as a volunteer. Met Carrie (wtpclc) and DH Scott and Margie (funwalker) and, forgive me because I am so bad with names and it was "run/walk-by", I think Diane and maybe Lynne? (Okay who took the picture of me with the Martian?)
It was fun to cheer on people I knew--even saw a couple of neighbors and people from work.

And here's the thing, I never would expect people to thank me for being a volunteer--but tons of people said that to me. I mean, I think of myself as a polite person (mostly), but I'm not sure I would spend my race thanking all the volunteers. It was really surprising to me.

So all in all, a pretty good--but tiring--day. And now I have this great volunteer shirt--green with a picture of an alien head and the words "Obey me". I was thinking maybe I'd take it in to work and hang it in my (soon to be given up) office.

Matt, good job on the "Just up and do it" event.

Kristi, glad it's over for you. I look forward to a report. You are such a great team mate to talk Angie away from thinking of those blisters. Sounds like it helped.

Maura, I think you deserve to be congratulated for having volunteered. WISH Team usually always talks it up to make sure we thank the volunteers. We need you!

Erin, Thanks for linking your report. I'm heading over to read it.

Erin,

Congrats on your race! I would love to finish a half in the time you posted. Who am I kidding--I would love to just finish a half! (My first will be next year's Donald) And sorry for not getting names straight!

Maura

Wow, what a great weekend! They had sent out a request for volunteers the weekend before the marathon, so I took that as a sign that it’s time for me to step up. Scott, Margie and I signed up for 1 to 5 at packet pickup Saturday. Well, how can you go wrong with these shirts???
IMG_0263.jpg

Yes, it really says “Obey Me” at the bottom!
We met Maura and saw Diane and Lynne and Erin at the expo. How fun! Not too much time to talk, though.

Packet handout was fun. I actually got to give my former and all-time favorite dentist (which speaks volumes) his packet for the half. Too cool! Getting to know the other volunteers was a lot of fun too. They very much had the WISH mentality.

A handful of people were kind of rude, but most of the people were great. I will never wonder about the brain capacity of anyone who seems to take a long time to give me my packet either. After about an hour, I swear they change the alphabet on you. :p

The best part, though, were the 2 people who gave me a deer in the headlights look when I asked if they wanted safety pins. Then they would get all embarrassed and say, “I don’t know. I’ve never done this before.” Luckily, neither of them had people behind them. So, I’d take them through bibs and chips. And tell them a little of what would happen. That was very cool for me.

The first-timer woman came back a few minutes later and said, “Since you’re not busy, can I ask you a few more questions.” I just wanted to hug her and giver her my cell and tell her to call me in the morning and we’d take care of her. She was so quiet and scared. I think Hugging her may have scared her more, though. ;) The half had a 6.5 hour time limit, so it was great for beginners. Still, I can’t imagine doing a half as your first race ever. Wow.

Volunteering was fun, though, and I will be sure to do my share more often, though.

Then it was back to my parents and off to carb load with Lynne, Erin and Margie. That was just too great for words to have so much time to spend with WISHers. OK, it went too fast as always, but I tend to be more of a small group person and this was just a great size. Hugs to you 3 for making it such a special weekend!

Before we knew it, it was time to go to the race. Morning came early, as some of us had a bit of a hard time settling down Saturday night. :p We had time for a pic before we went, though.

I need to work on my remote picture taking capabilities, but Erin said she’d fix it. ;)

We got to the race and hung out inside for a while and Diane, Susan and Cathy found us. It was cool to have a nice group to walk to the start. More time for pix too.

The first aid tent, lol.

We met another Disney-lover at the start when she came to tell us she liked our shirts. She had done DL.
Actually, we say a good number of WDW race shirts throughout the ace. That always perks you up.

So, we start. Takes 3 to 4 min to get to the start and we were off. Had to rain Scott in when we were doing 9:30s, as our goal time for a PR was 11:27. Well, we got it down around 1o by mile 1.

IMG_0273.jpg

Sad when you like these a lot better than the sharpie signs. ;)

Mile 2 was a little more to our pace, but not much. Around mile 3, we were on to the out and back.

Passed Marshall Maura. Thanks so much for being there all day!!!!
IMG_0275.jpg

Passed cone heads. Lol. The cones were from test Track!
IMG_0276.jpg

The weather was absolutely perfect and we continued to fly doing pace in the 10:40s. I kept thinking I would hit a wall, but was gonna’ keep it up while it felt good. Caught up to Lynne and Erin as they made a pit stop at Mile ~5.5. At mile 7.75 were did the turn around. Only 5.5 miles to go! It was fun to see the other WISHers and the people we volunteered with on the course. Very good thing about this out and back.

IMG_0277.jpg

Around mile 8, I started to get tired, but nothing too bad. I kept wanting to check my average pace, but I was afraid I’d do the math, know how slow I could do for the last miles and still PR and let off the gas. Very proud of myself for not looking.

IMG_0281_edited.jpg

In addition to friends, it was fun to see people who were struggling and cheer for them. We slapped hands with a few people and it was nice to distract myself for a bit. Before I knew it, we were here.

IMG_0282.jpg

Holy cow! I was slowing down, but still only had 2 miles over 11 minutes. They were both when I had a water stop and/or had a clothing change and were still below 11:10. OMG! I was very tired, but only had 2 miles to go. Had another water stop and mile 12 was just over 11 too. Even more amazing was that Lynne and Erin were still in sight.

IMG_0283_edited.jpg

OK, so that was due to another pit stop, but I’ll take it any way I can get it. ;)
Still, I was bound for a PR. My only goal the last mile was to be under 11:27, my goal time. There was another hill (there were lots), but I was well below 11 for my last mile. As I approached the clock, I saw that I would break my goal by around 6 minute by clock time. How cool is that???????

Garmin had me at 13.23 miles, 2:22 and an average pace of 10:43. I was stunned!

Wow. And WISHers at the end to celebrate with. Woo hoo! Had to say goodbye to Lynne and Erin, as they had a long trip home :(, but we got our cow bells and were off to cheer for the others. We had several shouts of “Need more cowbell”. Lol.

I guess I was too excited and forgot to get a pic for Margie. She PR’d, though, and is on track for having pic time for WDW 09! Yay!!!

Diane came not long after.

IMG_0285.jpg

Stayed for Susan and Cathy and of course forgot pix for them too. :(
It was time to be off and sad to be ending the weekend, but my carful was happy. What a wonderful WISH weekend! Hugs to everyone for making it special! Best way to append a weekend if you can’t be at WDW!

PS - I have officially been taken over by aliens! :lmao:

Matt - COngratulations!!!

Erin - DIdn't realize you PR'd by so much. Way to go! Coal report format on BT.

Carrie,

Congrats on your PR! I have a sunburned face today, but it was a pleasant day for me. I saw a Mickey, Donald and Goofy shirt from this year's races. And the coneheads--I didn't even notice they were from Test Track! The last racer passed by me at 2:45 pm, so it was a long day.

And that's my back in the picture you took on the bike trail of Erin and Lynne! I was desperately in need of a pit stop myself, which fortunately I got!

Seems like everyone did really well, and Margie was happy about her pace--definitely under 15 mpm.

Great day for a race and great results all the way around. Good for you guys!!!

Maura - lol. I didn't notice your back. I was still bummed that you weren;t at your station anymore at that point. ;) EVen better having a little talk time. BTW, Scott and I felt so sorry for you when we daw teh "quarter mile" you had to walk. :scared1:

Thanks for waiting for us to finish!! It was great having the WISH Team there to cheer us on!

Ed - Stinks that it got postponed to the day of the CM half :(

Scott - Sorry to hear about the troubles you had out there...great job powering thru though!

Matt - Dude...that's a looonnng ride! Nice job!

Kristi - Congrats to you and Angie! Sounds like she was struggling and you were there for her, way to go!

Maura - So cool that you were a volunteer! And very nice that you got thanked...we often tend to overlook the people donating the time to make the events we run in so successful...and even though I wasn't there, thank you!

Erin
- Great race!! Awesome PR!!

Carrie
- Awesome pics and great report...but most of all congratulations!!

WAY TO GO EVERYONE!! The WiSH team was well represented this weekend!! Nice job :goodvibes:
