Good luck everyone! A special shout out to David, Wendy and Jeff going for the long haul!

Went last night and picked up my packet for the Kiawah Half Marathon! The shirt is cute - long sleeved. We scoped out the area and it looks very flat! Hopefully it will be a nice course. Weather is supposed to be 42 degrees and 30% chance of rain. That is cold for me!!!

Somehow Tracy & Chester Scott are missing from the Honolulu Marathon list. I'm confirming they are here with the following evidence. :lmao:

As always, Jeff, love the photos.

Very quick race report. WISHers Anne and Pat flew to Raleigh NC on Thursday where I picked them up and we headed to Charleston SC. Took a couple of Charleston tours (beautiful, very walkable city) before heading to Kiawah Island for the bike tour of the race course and a very yummy prerace pasta dinner. Raceday saw Becky (lexxiefern) in the starting lineup. Just barely managed to keep up with Pat and Anne for their half marathon (my first of two loops for the marathon course). Slowed way down after that -- I have really struggled pace-wise this year and don't really know why -- and those two angelic WISHers left their lovely post-race feast (and Kiawah offers quite a spread) to join me back on the marathon course in a cold steady rain to log a total of 23 miles!!!!! They are so ready for Goofy!!! :woohoo:

For my part, another of a string of lackluster marathon finishes this year made bearable only because of the spirit and generousity of WISHers Anne and Pat. Can't say enough about that team spirit. Nice recycled glass medal and organic cotton long-sleeved tshirt -- both part of their sustainability (green) efforts at Kiawah this year.

A more detailed report is coming.

(Overall finisher) 2075 Jeffrey Oh #832 HONOLULU USA (Clock time start) 5:00:29 (10K) 56:31 (21.1K) 1:58:43 (20K) 2:48:11 (30K) 3:54:56 (Clock Time finish) 4:09:15 (Chip finish) 4:08:47 (Overall Male) 1616 (Male 40-44)260 Minor calf cramping at mile 20 prevented a sub-4 hour finish.

Chester Scott earned his Marathon Maniac status with back to back weekend marathons. His time was 5:30:19. He re-fueled at our clinic's tent, and then headed back out to bring Tracy in. At last check she was past the 30K mark. :cool1:

Kiawah was fun but very cold! Definately my coldest race yet. It was about 42 degrees. I managed to avoid the rain. (sorry Wendy that you got it!!) Was great to see Wendy, Pat and Anne at the beginning. I ran this race with my friend Lauren and it was her 2nd half. I told her she could set the pace and by golly she did! I thought we were going to take it easy, but everytime we stopped to have a gu, she was bugging me to start running again! (Our last half together - her first - was done in 3:02) The course was flat and beautiful with huge trees and houses all along the marsh. There were about 4,000 runners between the half and the full. We finished in 2:25 (not sure on official time yet). My friend was beside herself!

Afterwards there was a buffet with pasta with chicken, couscous, corn muffins, oranges, bananas, white bean soup and BROWNIES!! Also coffee, lemonade, hot chocolate. Great spread.

The medal (see Wendy's pic) was pretty but the lanyard was extremely cheap. Just a cord like I would find on one of my girls play necklaces. But the long sleeve tee is really nice and I loved the course and the race. Will definately be back next year!

Great job Jeff! Sorry about the calf cramps. Apparently this was a day for them...

Nice job for Chester too.

Wendy - Love the medals! Kiawah is creeping up my list. Sorry you're having such a battle with pace this year. You're our marathon hero! (or I guess I should make that heroine?) Love the fact that Anne and Pat turned a half marathon into 23 miles. Now that's dedication!

I didn't ever get this one on the list, but I did the Run to Victory at Victory Junction today. The course is unbelievably hilly, but we all choose to repeat the race since the proceeds go to the Victory Junction Gang camp for children with chronic illnesses. Forecast was for 36 degrees and rain at the start. It was actually closer to 32, with a steady drizzle that finally developed into sleet around mile 10. Gotta admit, that's a first! I actually stayed fairly warm until the sleet started, then we just picked up the pace simply because we wanted it to end. I suffered from Jeff's calf cramps around mile 12, but was able to run/walk through them enough to finish. DH is having problems with his knee (IT band) and was in severe pain by the finish.

At the end they served chili and cornbread, coffee and hot chocolate, so we ate and then had to catch a bus back to the parking lot. Unfortunately, there was a 20 minute wait for the buses, and we were already wet, so by the time we got back to the car DH and I were completely and totally miserable.

The good news is that my only two other half marathons have been after injuries, so even though this race was exceptionally hilly and very cold, I still managed a PR. Came in at 2:48:02, which is about 6:30 better than my last half. Not a bad day.

Becky - Great job! We were talking about Kiawah this morning before our race started and imagining how warm it was there. Guess not! :confused3 Sounds like your buffet was way better than ours. Kiawah just moved up yet another spot on my list...

Jackie

Jackie - Congrats on the PR!! I guess I shouldn't complain about 42 degrees if it was sleeting when you were running! Yuck!

Mr. & Mrs. Incredible, aka Chester and Tracy completed the Honolulu Marathon.

Tracy came in a little after 4 pm.

See folks, Honolulu has the most generous time limit, and no sweepers. You can continue racing until the last person finishes. People will still be finishing later on tonight, between 10 pm and midnight! At least it's cool again now that the sun has set.

Enjoy the rest of your stay you two, you deserve it!

Way to go Pat, Anne, Wendy, Becky, Jackie, Tracy, & Scott. WISHers got the job done this weekend. DIDN'T WE!!! :cool1:

Mr. & Mrs. Incredible, aka Chester and Tracy completed the Honolulu Marathon.

Congratulations Chester and Tracy!!!! And kudos to Jeff for being a great host and an inspiring athlete!

Jackie, good for you for hanging in there in the steady rain and SLEET! And a PR?!?!? You go!

And congrats to you, Becky for finishing high and dry on the island! What an incredible pace you set! Wow!

The last finisher came in shortly after 7 pm. Much earlier than in the last few years.

Japanese runner is last to finish

One of the nice things about the Honolulu Marathon is that race officials wait until all the runners finish and credit them with a time. Totaro Ito of Iseshi, Japan, is glad they do.

The 77-year-old did not set any records after his time of 14 hours, 20 minutes, 4 seconds was officially recorded, making him the last one to cross the finish line long after the sun had set on Kapiolani Park.

Of the 23,469 who entered the 26.2-mile run, 20,609 showed up yesterday morning to compete in the race, and 20,321 finished it.

"We always have a high number of people complete this race," Honolulu Marathon spokesman Pat Bigold said last night. "Not all of the marathons wait until the last person finishes, but we do. We also give certificates and their time for each person who crosses the finish line."

Wendy, Jeff, Chester, Tracy, Pat, Anne, Becky and Jackie,

Congratulations!
Great job!

I hope I did not miss anyone.
