Race for the Taste 2006

I'm a little worried about the report that they are going to feed us before the race. I don't want the food before the race, I want it afterward! They are going to give us champagne before the race? This doesn't sound too good, we'll all be stumbling around the course! :drinking1

I actually called the people who manage the race for Disney because I wanted to know if my husband would be able to "partake" of the food & wine if he was a spectator. They said that last year there was so much food, they did let the spectators eat & drink. This point has become moot because my husband is now registered for the race as well (he'll walk it).

Did anyone run this last year? How did it work? Did you eat & drink beforehand, afterward, or both? I would just be really bummed if we are supposed to do the tasting beforehand b/c I certainly can't run 6.2 miles on a full stomach!

PS This is my first post on the Disboards! I am running the Disney Half Marathon in January as well, so I will probably be around here quite a bit! I'm in the Tampa area & went to the Food & Wine Festival last year and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Welcome mountainlake! :wave2: And hi, neighbor...I'm just a bit south of you!

Come join us on the weekly Walking/Running club threads. Most folks there are training for WDW half/full/Goofy. We'd love to have you join us!

Well, hello Mountainlake! Everything is speculation until we see some official media. The one blurb said a "toast" and the other said "light" appetizers before the race. The real heavy stuff will come after the race. Even right after the race, I won't feel much like wining and dining..maybe whining.... :rotfl2: See you there with my DH! Anne

I will definitely NOT have any food before the race.
A) I can't eat that early anyway
B) I prefer to run on an empty stomach. A banana and a sportsdrink is all I will have.
This morning DW & I did 55 minutes on the treadmill before breakfast at 8min per mile (me) and 8:30 (DW), followed by some sets of push-ups and a some abs. We'll do the same tomorrow.
I already started looking for some 10K runs in our vicinity in July and August to get prepared for WDW.
What time for the 10K is everybody aiming for? DW and plan to do 50 minutes, but may adjust that to another value after our races over here.

Welcome to Mountainlake :wave2:

Hello, Viking! You and your DW amaze me with all of your training! DH and I are no where near the competitiveness you two are. We are just starting in this sport. We are just glad to finish before the sweepers! :cool1: Anne

Anne-- I dont remember what the logo of the medal looked like. It was on the table next to the marathon medals. It was a silver/pewter one and had 3 charms hanging off it- spoon, fork & knife VERY CUTE!

When I was there looking at the medals, I called my mom over (who is doing all these races with me) and showed her the race for the taste one & told her I wanted that one too. There was this very skinny, very athletic girl next to me & she said "you have to run the race to get it" as if there was no way I could or would do that. Very sarcastic tone. Had I not been so excited to be back in WDW for my girls weekend I would have responded just as nasty (like, after 2 1/2 marys & a 15k I think a 10k would be no problem :furious: ) instead I just said that I already had the Donald & its getting expensive for me to keep making trips down for the races. The more I thought about it afterwards, the madder I got!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the updates, everyone!

TiffJ, I definitely think you should have said something about your running experience to that nasty woman! Most runners are really wonderful, but some can be elitist. There are lots of great runners who may not conform to the typical image of a runner (e.g., rail thin and flat chested) - she just needed her narrow mind pried open a little!

I've only run one 10K, at a 12:43 pace, took me 1:19 to finish. I just started running last May, so it's been about a year. I plan on training all summer so I can improve my times. Of course, training through the summer in Tampa will be a challenge, but I'll just get up very early to run, or run late in the evening. I can't do treadmills, at least not for long runs.

I will never be a fast runner but I really love it and all the wonderful benefits running gives me: healthier and more toned body, stress relief, good quality "me" time, tons of energy, etc.

Thanks again and I'll definitely be sticking around WISH! :sunny:

Mountainlake, WOW!! a 12:43 pace is fantastic to me! Keep with your great attitude. :thumbsup2 It's all about having a good time while keeping healthy. I'm reading "Courage to Start" by John Bingham and just read the part where he says that! So many people lose their joy of running because they start setting these unrealistic goals. Like I've said before..I'm absolutely amazed that I am doing any this and am just thrilled to be ahead of the sweepers!
Tiffj, Eeegads :scared1: I was that close to the medal!!! What a dork I am...siiiggghhh. Speaking of dorks, oh, my goodness what a RUDE person! I'm glad you told her you already HAD the Donald! Don't waste your time remembering her. See the above comments and I'll bet she's one that doesn't have fun! :p Oh, and yes, I'll be at DL!
:sunny: Anne

Tiff she's probably one of those that sells her medal on ebay. Ignore her, forget her. YOUR a finisher :goodvibes

That medal does sound kewl with the charm, so for those doing that race photos of the medal are a must!

Anne,
we usually run only as a warm-up routine before working on the weights - But we're not bodybuilders, just doing it to maintain a level of fitness.
The only fast running we do is one or two races like the JPMCCC or the Komen Race, or when we do the Cardio Handicap at our gym, which is an assessment test for one's level of fitness. There we have to do 10 minutes each on the treadmill, on the rowing machine, and on the stationary bike. To reach the best level in running as a male I have to run 6:26 minutes a mile for 10 minutes. The targets for rowing and biking are similarily ambitious.
But with the 10K at WDW now on our schedule we have to move our focus a bit more towards running as we're both kind of ambitious when it comes to sport ;)
Eric

I'll be at this race. I race for food. It's not about the finishing time, it's about having fun!!!

I hope they feed me before the race and after because I love Food and Wine!!!

If I'm slow, oh well. I love food! :thumbsup2

Hi Scuba Diver,
we're making bubbles, too: DW & I are both PADI OWD since 2003 and dove so far in Florida, Cozumel, St. Thomas and Thailand.
After the Race for the Taste we'll do some diving in Cozumel again.

Well, as much as we want to, I now doubt that we will be doing the RfT. I'm still in a walking cast and now am having all kinds of tests done. I only hope that there is some conclusion in time for me to get some training in for DL!! I'm afraid, too, after DL, three weeks is probably cutting it too close for us old folks! :rolleyes1

On last week's cruise the diving in Costa Maya and Coz were great. Costa Maya reminded me of the diving in Belize, lots of swim throughs and sand chutes.

I would love to do Thailand. Some day!
