Abraham Lincoln's wit and wisdom always amazes me, even almost 150 years after his death . . .

"Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally."

"If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; but if this is tea, please bring me some coffee."

:teeth:

"Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it." Lincoln's Cooper Institute Address, February 27, 1860.

"I am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot."The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume IV, "Remarks at the Monogahela House" (February 14, 1861), p. 209.

Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser - in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough - July 1, 1850

Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right

"Property is the fruit of labor...property is desirable...is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."

Hey wait a minute....

I thought John Kerry said that?

Attributed to Lincoln:

When he was still practicing law, he was arguing a case against a team of attorneys who were trying to play some sort of linguistic reframing game with the facts. After court adjourned, he approached the attorneys (or perhaps they approached him, I don't remember) and the debate was continued.

Lincoln asked them, "Gentlemen, if you call a lamb's tail a leg, how many legs would it then have?"

They all agreed that a lamb would then have FIVE legs.

Lincoln disagreed, saying, "No, gentlemen, it would STILL have FOUR legs, because calling a lamb's tail a leg don't make it one."

One to remember on November 3rd:
We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

I think this needed repeated again.

Thanks all! My oldest is doing his biography on President Lincoln. I'll have to show him these.
