Quite possibly the dumbest reason to switch resorts- but help anyways

Hubby and I have 9 nights booked at Aulani April 21-30. We are brand new DVC owners, and this will be our first stay. I will preface this by saying that I am just getting through cancer treatments and can't tolerate cold- period. I HATE wind and even if it is 70, if it's windy I am still cold.

Looking ahead at accuweather, it looks like 40 mph winds the whole time we are there:( We are from canada and coming off a horrible, long, cold winter.

We are super concerned. I wanted to just lay out at the beach/pool all day long. Is it going to feel cold? I read some posts from other members long ago who had windy stays and they said they could not even stay on the beaches on the north shore due to the crazy wind.

Our other option is to switch gears and stay at WDW for a week. They are having glorious, hot, beautiful weather right now. We have been many, many times, but I do have an AP. We would have to do a bit of a resort hop, but would manage. On the flip side, we have never been to Hawaii!

Other option is we could fly to the west coast and do DL.

What should we do??

The few times that we have been to Hawaii, it was always breezy.

I went to Hawaii for 3 weeks in April - the 2 weeks I spent on the beach was windy due to the ocean and all - deeper inland it was slightly breezy. Aside from that, I found the weather to be great - was quite warm while I was there. Wherever you go, I hope you have a fantastic, relaxing time!

Many of our Hawaii stays have been breezy. The evenings felt a bit chilly for this reason. If you really don't think you can handle the wind then perhaps WDW would be a better option this time. (Can't believe I am saying that because I absolutely ADORE Hawaii. But hopefully you could do Hawaii another time.) Remember that the points you have used for Aulani will become holding points if you cancel so if your new reservation at WDW uses less points then the unused points will have the restrictions that come with holding points.
Whatever you choose I hope that your vacation is just perfect in every way. You deserve it.

thanks so much. Breezy is ok- it's the 80 km/hr winds that I am worried about. such a hard decision

Hello fellow frozen Canadian! We just spent our March break at Aulani (March 11-21). Yes, it does get breezy, but we are not talking crazy hurricane force winds. On overcast days (we had 2) it feels chillier with the breeze but the rest of the time it was clear skies and average 25-30 celsius during the day time while we were there. We spent most of the days lounging on the beach or by the pool. Evenings we we would wear or hoodie or sweater. We can't wait for the chance to get there again!

Also as a previous poster mentioned, if you cancel now, your points will be holding points which are a bit trickier to use.

Hawaii is always pretty windy in March & April - I have been in late April before tho and it was actually quite pleasant. The wind is going to be a WARM tropical trade wind, not an arctic chill like what you're used to in Canada. And the SUN will feel warm. Maybe you could rent one of the casabellas if you find it too windy and turn it to face away from the wind?! Or if you go over by the adult pool it may be a little more protected as it's set back from the beach a little bit. And of course you could always keep your pool cover-up on too if you're chilly just sitting around. Be sure to bring a sweater, hoodie or light jacket for evenings.

I'm sorry you've had to deal with these cancer treatments and I hope you start feeling better soon but switching gears at this point when you're so close to traveling is really hard because it involves a lot of juggling and you may lose lot of money when you cancel. I know first hand because we had DL and Aulani booked for August of 2013 and 8 days before we were supposed to go my DS got his 1st spontaneous pneumothorax (basically a collapsed lung) so he wasn't allowed to fly for 3 weeks!! We were worried about DS but also upset at having to cancel. I had to scramble to call DVC to cancel DL & Aulani and then switch to whatever was available at WDW (we pushed the trip back by a week so we could drive down instead and not lose our points which would've gone into holding). We were also going to Maui so I had several flights to cancel and multiple airlines booked (3). Each airline had their own cancelation policies I had to deal with and some wanted notes from the pulmonologist. Then there were shuttles in LA to cancel and rental cars in Hawaii (booked and prepaid thru Priceline), surf lessons to cancel, Pearl Harbor tour to cancel, ADR's at DL, and I had to canel our Maui portion which was booked with our Starwood points (Westin/Sheraton hotels). In order to not lose all those points and keep them active I had to book a cash night to stay someplace 1 night on our way to FL. Then I had to scramble to book a few ADR's at the last minute at WDW and get my car serviced & ready for a long road trip etc. All this while dealing with my DS's medical issue and taking him in to the pediatrician & pulmonologist for x-rays every 3 days. It was an insane couple of weeks. DS went on to have a 2nd pneumothorax in Nov. which resulted in lung surgery and then he had a 3rd one - but on his other lung in Feb, which also resulted in surgery. We were able to re-plan the trip for last summer but we'd lost some money on the 1st trip, had airline restrictions, penalties to pay and higher airfare to deal with and we had fewer points to work with and had to do a lot of borrowing (we had banked points for the 1st time). ANYWAY it was very stressful and I hope to never have to go through that again.

IMO you should keep your Aulani reservation - I would only cancel for a medical emergency. I don't think it will be nearly as cold as what you're thinking it will be. It's going to feel tropical and you're going to love it once you get there. JM2C. Hope you go and have fun!
