Quiet Cove Pool & proof of age

I was going to mention that in my other post...why didn't the CM just swipe his card somewhere to see the photo that popped up.

I guess if you are a young looking adult you should be prepared that being carded may be a possibility (either at the clubs or any other adult area)....and either the CM to swipe the card somewhere or keep a photo ID handy. I know it is a pain but just one of those things in life to deal...could be worse!!!

MJ

He asked the guy if he could just scan his card, and see his pic or ask to verify his room number but the CM said no it had to be a photo ID. He forgot what the code was to the safe or he would have gotten his passport, and showed it to him. You are right it could be worse. I think his main issue was other young looking people not being carded as well. He felt like he was singled out.

Speaking as if I were 18:

I don't appreciate having to get up and go to my room and "prove" anything that the CM couldn't find out for themselves by swiping my KTTW or anything else.

It's MY vacation and I shouldn't have to run around proving anything when I've done nothing wrong. :confused3

There's a difference between enforcing the rules and severely inconveniencing the guest. I believe the line was crossed here and while I don't know what you did about it later, but I can guarantee that that CM's superior would have heard about it. If they didn't have a method for determining his age and looking at his ID without making him go back to his room, I can understand. But, they did. If he was being loud, obnoxious and whatnot, then it's a little more understandable, but instead of making him go back to his room and prove who he is and his age, they should have just kicked him out, so I assume that was not the issue. IMO, obnoxious behavior has no age limit that makes it OK. Anyways, it sounds like it was a bad call on the CM's part, and if I'd been you, it wouldn't have ended there.

I have to respectfully disagree with the bolded statement. The Quiet Cove pool is often far from a "peaceful" environment. Sometimes it can be, but many times it's quite a "rowdy" place. I've seen some very loud & obnoxious antics at the Quiet Cove pool on our cruises. On one cruise, I commented that the Goofy pool was often more peaceful and quiet than the Quiet Cove pool area.

That said, it is designated as an adults-only area for those who want to enjoy the amenities whether it happens to be quiet or noisy on that particular day. I am surprised to hear that they might be carding those who may be look too young unless they are beginning to have problems with younger teens in the adult-only areas.

It is definitely peaceful when kids are not around, no matter how "rowdy" the adults get.

Just a thought: I wonder what the CM's would do if I (being 44 yerars old) decided i wanted to hang out at Vibe for the afternoon? Even if I promised to behave, do you think they'd let me stay? Personally, I'd LOVE to spend some time in Vibe, it looks great, but I realize that this space is reserved for teens only, so will hang at Quiet Cove instead....and I'd like to think teens under 18 would adhere to policy as well.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
Awesome question! I'm sure the parents who think it's okay to bring their kids into the adult areas to "visit" the other parent or are just too lazy to walk around wouldn't mind. After all, we paid to enjoy the amenities too, why should the kids have the only access to those areas?

As a person who looks MUCH younger than her real age, I understand the getting carded thing, and even being inconvenienced due to looking young (had my ID broke in half when I was 23 because the guy said there was absolutely no way in Hell that I was 21 and as late as 30, I've been asked what high school I went to... still, at 34, get blank stares whenever I tell somebody my real age for the first time). But the CM making him walk all the way back to the room to go get his photo ID is ridiculous. Perhaps the CM is new and doesn't know that he can take the KTTW card to the bar and ask them to swipe it? I don't know, but I would have been FURIOUS... and again, I've had my ID broken because they thought it was a fake (it wasn't), but I think I'd be madder if I had to walk all the way back to my room to show something that they have access to with a quick scan of the KTTW card!

I've never been on a ship so huge that walking back to my room to retrieve something I forgot is a major hassle or inconvenience. Certainly, for an 18 year old it couldn't be that much of an issue, could it? My kids always knew that their ID needed to be on them anywhere they went, that's what dry boxes are for.

Since we're allowed to set our own rules, I intend to smoke inside the common areas of the ship. I'll of course stop if someone complains, but this shouldn't bother anybody.

Are you sure a Disney cruise is for you. If getting hit with balls, enduring drunken belly flops and guests yelling across the length of the pool to hold a "conversation" are more peaceful than an 18 year old who looks 17 sitting in a lounge chair is more "peaceful" to you, then we definitely disagree on how to enjoy a cruise.

All of us know that the Quiet Cove pool area has limited resources (i.e. the size of the pool, the space in the hot tubs and the number of loungers and areas to sit). If there is a "17 year old lounging by the quiet cove pool" he or she may very well be negatively impacting the enjoyment of those adults who should be in the area - the area is simply too small on some cruises even when only adults are present, let alone those under 18. And where does one draw the line? At a single teenager? More than two? Whether they are well behaved or not? Some, therefore, do not consider it a "waste" of their vacation to report it, but rather an opportunity to assure their own enjoyment of the area.

I never said that those under 18 shouldn't be there. Reporting someone who appears to be 17 when he/she is actually over 18 is rude IMO. Sure, you may be right sometimes but you will also be wrong at other times making you look like a "nosy Nellie". It is DCL's job to enforce its rules. I have spent at least 13 full Sea Days onboard the Magic and most of those were spent partially or fully on the pool deck. We have spent many days at the Quiet Cove pool on sold out cruises, and I have yet to have difficulty finding a place to sit in a lounger or in the pool itself. Where are these teens who hog the chairs that in this "small" area?

And to BlackFrank- we are strict rule followers, but generally don't act as DCL's rules police. The main exception is for smoking. Although we have never complained to a CM about smokers as they were in designated areas, we found out after the fact that some very rude smokers who caused us to move as they would not stop after just one, were indeed smoking where they shouldn't. They were on Deck 4 around two in the afternoon. Had I known smoking was prohibited on Deck 4 between six am and six pm, I would have asked them to stop or asked a CM.

Just because you are not concerned about others following all the rules when on vacation doesn't mean you don't follow rules yourself.

Yeah. Because that's EXACTLY the same thing as a 17 yr old in an 18 and up area.

Please tell me how an almost 18 year old simply being in an adults area (not hurting you, not doing anything to you... just being there) has ever caused you physical, severe health risks including having to be rushed to the hospital and given steroids and put on breathing machines immediately. Because for some, THAT is how severe reactions can be with cigarette smoke. Get real. Seriously.

No disrespect taken and I am quite sure you are right. I was just trying to make the point that there are different kinds of "adults-only" areas in life. Some areas are restricted to adults because the predominant activity there (bars, casinos, strip clubs etc.) is off-limits to those who are under-age. Other adults-only areas are designated as such, not because anything there is inherently inappropriate for minors, but because the intention is to make it a more peaceful environment than you would typically get with children around. Of course we all know that there are plenty of adults who behave like children (or worse!). :)

You break your rules... I'll break mine...

We were on the Magic last week and DS who's 18 was asked to provide photo ID to prove he was 18. It was a sea day and his photo ID was locked in the room safe and he couldn't access it. He's a young looking 18, but he is an adult. Has this happened to anyone else?

That would have happened to me. It probably could happen now and I'm 27 (super short, baby face). It's irritating, they should give him the benefit of the doubt unless he's being disruptive. The worst thing you could tell him is that he'll 'appreciate it when he's older'. It minimizes how frustrating it is for him now, which is even more annoying.

I went on the Disney cruise at age 16 and didn't run into this because I obviously couldn't go the adult areas at that age. I know this isn't the issue here but I would have enjoyed the cruise so much more if I could have used the spa (I'm so glad the newer ships have teen spa areas...lol). Anyway, I'm sorry he had to deal with that. The CM went over the line when he he had to go back to his room. If alcohol and liquor licenses are involved, I get that....but a pool? Meh. What about those signs at resorts that require children under 12 to be accompanied by an adult or whatever it is they say, are you going to start asking for their cards?

On a side note, when I was last in Disney World (2004), I'm pretty sure my card said 'adult' and I was only 20. Now I'll have to dig it out of my scrapbook to see, I'm curious.

I completely agree with your sentiments KS Disney Dad. There are some who post continually on these types of discussions (re:rules) with the same message over and over.... very obsessed with making sure that everyone gets exactly the same things, that there is no special treatment, newbies are the same as vets.... Quite honestly, I would think this detracts from having good time - to be so overtaken with what everyone else is doing. I can't imagine having a great vacation policing the other passengers... but hey, to each is own.

Personally, adult means adult, but to look around and try and guess ages and report to CM's seems over the top to me.

You didn't answer my question.

This situation you describe is an extreme reaction; one I've never encountered (or even heard about firsthand). It's not reasonable to expect that in general, someone will go into convulsions due to exposure to cigarette smoke, especially in an environment where smoking is allowed in some areas. I can imagine that there are obsessive/compulsive types who have a negative reaction whenever they see rules being broken (I know someone like this).

So if you think it's fair to assume that no one should be bothered by children in an adult area, it's just as fair for me to assume that no one will be seriously impacted by my smoking.

But I can see I'm wasting my breath here. People will continue to pick and choose which rules to follow based on how convenient they are to them personally at the time, and there's nothing I can say or do that will change their minds.

For all those worried about me being the "rules police", let me put your minds at ease: I've cancelled our cruise and will pick a less contentious holiday.

These boards have certainly been an eye-opener. I hope you all enjoy your vacations, and best of luck.

At WDW "adult" is all about money. DS's 10 day ticket says adult since he was 10 years old when we bought it.

I'm positive a Disney cruise is for me. I've done enough cruises to know that. I enjoy my Disney cruises. Disney has set aside three small areas of the ships for adults and thankfully most of the adults respect that and keep their kids out of them.

I have never seen drunken belly flops, people yelling across the pool, or anything else like that. What I have seen are plenty of parents who think that just because their kid is quiet that the kid is welcome in the adult pool. They feel entitled to ignore the rules set up by DCL.

Fortunately, the vast majority of parents on the ships I have been on have had more class than to think that the rules don't apply to them. For example, my MR cruise last month had 800 kids on board. Out of those 800 kids, just five sets of parents felt it was okay to ignore the over 18 rule. Most of the parents had more sense than that. A few young children stumbled through the adult area, unattended and looking lost, but that's a whole 'nother issue!

I think you are making the right decision. Based on your posts, I don't think you would have been able to enjoy a Disney cruise. Best of luck to you, too.:)
