We stayed at WDW for nine nights (after a four night stay at Universal). I will do some quick reviews of the restaurants we ate at. We were on the basic Dining Plan, which was a great deal for us since (1) DD9 turned 10 during our stay, but was a kid for the whole trip since we started our stay when she was 9 and (2) we usually do sit down dinners and these provide the best value for the DDP.

Anyway, here is what we did:

Tuesday, August 12:

Lunch was at Sci-Fi. My kids love this place, so we go here every trip (also like it since the DHS counter services restaurants are not appealing). We had an 11:30 ADR and were seated within 10 minutes. Restaurant was very crowded and no walk ups were being accepted. Food was basic and pretty good. DW and I each had the burgers, and the kids had burgers as well (cheese and bacon were added at no charge). Only issue – the service was very slow. Waiter did refill drinks promptly, but the entrées took a long time to arrive, and the kids desserts also took a long time. Paid for this OOP – about $60.00 for lunch with 18% tip.

Dinner was at Pecos Bill. We had a long day this Tuesday (arrived at Poly around 7:00am to make DHS rope drop), then went to La Nouba and then to MK to see the 11:00pm Spectromagic (since the show was not running on the date I had planned to see it). Therefore, we did a simple dinner. DW and I each had the Chicken Wrap and one kid had a burger (the other only had fries). Chicken Wrap was very good for a CS meal (certainly better than anything at Universal where counter service is universally bad), and service was prompt. 3 CS credits.

Wednesday, August 13.

Breakfast (for me) was at Capt. Cooks. Used a CS meal to get Tonga Toast w/ sausage (while the rest of the family slept). This was very good. 1 CS credit.

Lunch was at CHH. We were not forced to order from the kids menu – the kids wanted chicken nuggets so we ordered these for the kids without any problem. I had the chicken/fish combo and DW had the tuna sandwich. All of the food was very good. The chocolate cake and apple crisp desserts were also very good. We arrived at about 11:00am for lunch, so restaurant was not crowded and the seating upstairs is nice and quiet (it was crowded by the time we left at 11:40). We eat here every trip, and I really recommend this place. The kids menu stinks – it really needs to include chicken nuggets – but we ordered from the adult menu without any problem, 4 CS credits.

Dinner was at Biergarten. We had a 6:15 ADR and were seated within five minutes. Food here was very good and I love German food (live in Milwaukee and we have a few great German restaurants). The salads, pretzel bread and desserts were great, and the sauerbraten (labeled pot roast) was really good. My kids really enjoyed to show (started at 7:00). The only problem – service was AWFUL. Our waitress (from Germany) simply disappeared after giving us our drinks. She returned once to remove plates (after I tracked her down), once to bring me a refill (my wife’s and kids’ drinks were never refilled) and (finally) to bring the bill (which she got wrong since I was on the dining plan). Thankfully, the tip was not mandatory, and I left only about 10% (I should have left nothing). I do recommend this restaurant – the food and show are very good. But this night, the service was horrible (although I did not see any other tables with stacks of dishes and unrefilled drinks). 4 TS credits.

Thursday, August 14

Lunch was a Pizzafari. Again, we were not forced to order from the kids menu since the kids wanted pizza and pizza is not included on the kids menu (how that is possible for a restaurant with pizza in its name, I do not know). Kids had pepperoni pizza, DW had bread sticks and side salad and I had Italian sandwich. Desserts were chocolate cake and apple pie. Food was pretty good (I think the pizza is awful, but the kids like it). Bread sticks are very good. Again, we arrived at about 11:00am to beat the crowds and the wait was minimal. 3 CS credit.

Dinner was a Tusker House. We had a 5:00 ADR, but arrived early (4:30) and were seated immediately. Food here was excellent – tied for the best buffet of the trip (with BOMA). Salads (especially the caesars salad) were excellent, the dessert bar was great and the samosa’s (little crispy pockets filled with veggies) were truly outstanding. Dishes were replenished regularly and service was extremely good. I highly recommend this restaurant. 4 TS credits

Friday, August 15

Lunch was at Sunshine Seasons. Kids had the childrens sub sandwiches, my wife had the Gridner sandwich and I had the caesars salad. All of the food was very good – this is a great CS restaurant in Epcot. Desserts were especially good. Again, we ate early to avoid the crowds (this place was packed by 11:45). 4 CS credits

Dinner was a Le Cellier. We had a 5:00pm ADR and were seated immediately. They were (hard to believe) accepting walk up seatings, and the place was not that crowded even when we left at 6:45 or so. Food here, as in our previous visits, was exceptional. I had the onion soup appetizer while the kids had cheese soup (great for dipping the excellent bread sticks). My DW and I each had the mushroom filet – they were cooked perfectly (medium rare for me, medium for DW). The kids had the kids’ steak with fries (again, very good). I also ordered the creamed spinach – which is made here with a thick covering of cheese (being from Wisconsin, where our motto is everything can be improved with cheese) which made this quite good. Desserts were cheesecake and the chocolate cake – again excellent (but I should have ordered the Maple Crème Brulee). Service was truly exceptional. 4 TS credits

Saturday, August 17.

This was our ‘ocean day’, so we actually slept in a bit (7:30 for me, 8:30 for DW, and 9:00 for the kids). Therefore, we had breakfast at Kona Café before leaving for Cocoa Beach (paid OOP). Breakfast here is very good – I had the Macadamia Nut pancakes, DW and DD (now) 10 had the two eggs/sausage/potato plate, and DD8 had the kids pancakes (with chocolate chips added at no extra charge). Also, had the press pot coffee. We try to eat here every trip (I love the Tonga Toast, but was able to get that at Capt. Cooks since we were staying at the Poly). Service was very good. Cost was 60.00 with tip (paid OOP).

Dinner was at Boma. We had a 5:40 ADR and arrived arrived 30 minutes early. Restaurant was very, very crowded but we were seated almost immediately. I believe this was a mistake – our beeper went off almost as soon as it was handed to me, but when I got the bill they had the wrong name on the bill. My guess – I received someone else’s beeper. I only hope that the person whose table that I took did not have to wait too long. Food here was great – I love this restaurant both for the variety and the overall quality of the food. The curry pasta salad, carrot ginger soup, and cocomisu dessert are personal favorites. I chose Saturday since these menu rotation (as printed on these boards) included ribs which were delicions. Service (which on previous visits had been a problem) was great. I recommend this restaurant unreservedly to anyone visiting WDW. The only issue – the line for the entrees was very long – I waited ten minutes the two (or was it three??) times I refilled by plate. 4 TS credits.

Sunday, August 18.

Lunch was a mess. We were at DHS and it seemed that all lunch CS places frist opened at 11:30. This was really annoying since we wanted to each lunch by 11 and also wanted to see the 11:55 Lights, Motors Action show. Therefore, lunch was a pretzel and other junk so we could see the show. I will say, DHS does not seem to have reacted well to its status as a very crowded park (TSM has done this) and having the lunch places open so late was just a part of the problem. Oh well – this also ended up being children break down day so we left early and returned to our room to swim.

Dinner was Toy Story Pizza Planet. We returned to DHS and decided to skip our ADR at BD (I was going to pay OOP, but we were accumulating a lot of unused CS meals, so I though we would save some money and use CS meals). Pizza here was okay, and the salads were a nice addition. Cookies were very good. I would not recommend this restaurant (it was very loud) but this was one of the location open when we ate at about 7:30pm (many CS locations close early at DHS, another problem). 4 CS credits

Monday, August 19.

Lunch was at Tangierine Café. This is one of our favorite CS restaurants and it did not disappoint. The Shawarama platter, Chicken sandwich, and (for the kids) chicken strips are very good. In fact, this place was still using the ‘old’ chicken strips. Baklava dessert was very good. We ate around 12:30 and this restaurant was not very crowded. 4 CS credits

Dinner was at Le Chefs de France. We had a 5:00 ADR, arrived right at 5:00 and waited about 15 minutes for our table (not the first long wait for this meal). We were seated right by the kitchen door (I should have complained) and this made for a miserable experience (I got bumped numerous times). We ordered appetizers (escargot and cheese plate) which arrived before our drinks. Escargot was good – cheese selection was not very good (certain cheeses should be room temperature, these were not). Our entrees took forever, waiter took forever to refill drinks, desserts took forever, you get the idea. Entrée’s were good (I had the tenderloin, my wife has the scallops, kids had the burgers), desserts were okay. Service was awful (our waiter, who was French, was at least 60 years old – seemed out of place with all the other much younger wait staff). My DW wanted to eat here, but we will not eat here again. 4 TS credits

Tuesday, August 20.

Lunch was at Casey’s. As always, the hot dogs here were very good. The toppings bar was clean and I love the spicy relish. Fries and brownies were also good. We lucked out and got a table inside (there are only three or four) and really enjoyed this meal. We try to eat here every trip, and I recommend this spot for a very good hot dog (and the wheat bun was fine, although it could have been a litter bigger). 4 CS cresits

Dinner was at Jiko. We arrived (in the pouring rain) about 1 hour before our 6:40 ADR. Still, we were seated immediately. We started with appetizers – Lamb Patis and Chef’s special flatbread. These were both very good. My wife ordered the scallops for dinner, the kids each had the steak. These were all very good. I ordered the Kenyan Beef Short Rib – this was only okay (it should have been cooked a little longer - it was not quite yet fall off the bone tender). Desserts were cheesecake (my wife declared this the best she ever had), the Pistachio Crème Brulee (very good) and puzzle desserts for the kids. Overall, this was a very good restaurant – but I was expecting a great restaurant. Service was only okay – our drinks arrived after the appetizers, we did not get prompt drink refills, it took forever to clear our dinner plates (occurred after dessert was delivered). For a signature dining restaurant, I expected a little more. I would recommend this restaurant – the food was quite good (but next time I would order the filet). But this was not the WOW experience I was expecting. 8 TS Credits

Wednesday, August 21.

Lunch was at Garden Grill (DD8’s favorite restaurant). We did not have an ADR, but we were able to walk up at 11 when it opened. Character interaction (in the relatively empty restaurant) was incredible. Characters returned numerous times, and stayed for a long time with each visit. DD8 was in heaven. Food was also very good – the beef, catfish and cheesy potatoes were truly exceptional and the other items were also very good. This is a great character meal (too bad lunch here in ending soon). Service was great – prompt food and drink refills. 4 TS credits

Dinner was at Crystal Palace. We had a 5:00 ADR, arrived ten minutes late but were still seated promptly. Restaurant was very crowded, so it took a while for the characters to arrive (and when they did, they were very rushed). Food here was pretty good - not as good as Garden Grill earlier in the day. Selection was good and the quality was also very good (WDW buffets impress me in this regard). Dessert selection was impressive – but the servings were ridiculously large (I like bite size pieces so you can try more things). Service was good (not great) since our waitress was very busy. I would eat here again, but I am not as enthusiastic about this place as on previous visits. 4 TS credits

Thursday, August 22 (final day).

We had 11 CS meals to use, and I was determined to use them all (actually, I thought we would have eight left for this day – enough for two meals).

Breakfast was at ABC Commissary (waiting for a TSM FP return time). We used 3 CS credit on bagel sandwiches and drinks. Bagel sandwiches were awful, and service was worse (hard to believe for an empty restaurant). 3 CS credits

Lunch was at Anandapur Café in AK. We used 4 CS credits and had Shrimp Lo Mein, Kug Pao Beef, and the kids had chicken nuggets. We also ordered egg rolls (very good) and the mango pies (also very good). Food here was really good – I was somewhat surprised. Kids did not like the chicken nuggets since they were the same used in the honey chicken adult entrée (I thought they were very good) but the kids loved the egg rolls (which is what I had told them to order from the kids menu). Oh well. The only problem here – the VERY, VERY aggressive birds. You eat outside, and the ducks and crows are merciless. I had to physically push the ducks away (numerous times), and a crow tried to land on my wife’s head. I do recommend this restaurant – it is a worthy replacement for the Tusker House CS restaurant. 4 CS credits

Dinner was at Wolfgang Puck’s Express. This was truly excellent. Everyone had pizza – kids had pepperoni, DW had pepperoni and mushroom, I had spicy chicken. Desserts were crème brulee and cookies. Everything was excellent. Although you order at the counter, your food is delivered by a waiter. Drinks are self serve, and therefore refills are free. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially if you are on the DDP (otherwise, it is fairly expensive). 4 CS credits.

Overall, we had several very good dining experiences. I recommend the DDP for anyone in my (rather unique) situation and for anyone with the obsessive planning mentality to assure that you use all credits. However, I do not think it is a very good deal if you have young ‘adults’ (calling a ten year old an adult is ridiculous) or if you would regularly use the TS credit for meals other than dinner.

We did use all of our snack credits (usually for fruit type snacks, pretzels, ice cream) and did get our money’s worth. I was happy to see that most places are now set up to take snack credits (our last visit in 2006, it seemed that many snack stands did not take the DDP or the computer was not working properly).

I am impressed with the overall quality of the food at WDW (it certainly beats Universal). I was also generally impressed with the service - with a few exceptions.

Any questions??

Thanks for the great reviews! Wow! You tried many of the places we either really like or are planning on trying on our next few trips.

One question -- several times you mention that you were able to get adult CS meals for the children. Did you ask the CMs and they let you do it? Or was it offered as an option to you when the kids wanted to order something that was not available to them? Just wondering what to expect!

Thanks for letting us know that your kids were able to get things that were not on the kid's menu. We'll know to try it when we go in Sept.

We simply ordered four adult items - the CM's never questioned this. If the CM had, we would have ordered two items in one line, and I would have stood in a separate line and ordered the other two items. I think at some level, WDW (or the managers at these restaurants) must recognize that the failure to have a kids pizza at Pizzafari, or kids nuggets at CHH makes no sense, and they do not object to kids getting them from the adult menu.
