Seems silly but...We are circling in on our first purchase - Direct - April use year - Will I get the 2017 points or Do I have to wait until 2018 April?

You are still in your April 2017 UY so you would naturally get those 2017 pts if you purchase before March 31, 2018.

If it can work for you consider a use year month that hasn't occurred yet this year, likely either October or December. If you get this then it should come with your 2016 use year points in addition to getting additional 2017 points. As a direct purchaser they should bank your 2016 points into 2017 even though the banking deadline for those UY's has passed. You'll then have twice the points you purchased loading into your account on the first day of your 2017 use year.

I would also go this route UNLESS you need the April Use Year for whatever reason.. Depending on the number of points you could rent out the 2016 points to recoup some of your costs or you could use them for an extra vacation.. And don't let them tell you they can't get you a different Use Year.. When we considered a direct purchase we asked about changing the Use Year and our guide was adamant that they could not.. I then told them that it would make or break the deal.. Magically "a supervisor" told him they could give the different Use Year and would bank us the points.. Needless to say we ended up going resale so we couldn't didn't go through with the direct..

Thanks everyone - I guess I'm confused. If I buy today - April Use year. Wouldn't they have to give me the April 2017 points - which I can then bank and get use them in 2018 - Thus getting 2x the points I bought in 2018?

Are you saying that if I buy October I would get the October 2016 points and April 2017 points. Basically having 2x points the day I buy it? Then I can expect another April 2018?

I then sell the 2016 - bank the 2017 and get the points in oct dec 2018 - Basically accelerating the points by 8 months or whatever?

Yes, if you bought an October, November or December UY, you would be able to get UY 2016 points, banked into UY 2017, thus giving you double points to use in your UY 2017 (October 1st, 2017 through October 31st, 2018, November 1st...........).

This being said, a good UY for your travel plans is more important, ie. for us a February UY is important to us with school age children because we can only go during February and April Vacations without pulling our kids out of school, and if we miss those dates we could go during the summer or bank our points into the next UY.

I think Poly would be selling at $185/point too if they hadn't screwed up and only built studios and bungalows. Oh well, here's hoping for Poly 2!

My opinion is that the choice of UY is very important for many. Once you're decided that DVC makes sense for you in general terms, what the best UY, home resort and number of points is, then you'd be ready to buy. Are you sure you want to spend that much, depending on the number of points you're looking at, would it be a significant savings to buy resale and do a 25 pt retail add on. You'd get EVERYTHING reasonable to buy for. At 100 total points it might not be worth it (not sure how many you're planning) but if you get much above that it can be a great savings, esp if you get a loaded resale contract.

If you buy today and get a Oct or Dec UY then on Oct or Dec 1st 2017 you would get your 2016 points and 2017 points, you would not get any additional points in April. UY is important to when your travel time is, you basically don't want to travel in the 3 months before your UY starts because if something happens and you need to cancel you can't bank. So for a December UY you wouldn't want to have a trip booked to start after 31 August. The banking deadline for a Dec UY is 31 July and you need to cancel more than 31 days out regardless or your points go into holding. I believe if I find out on 31 July that my trip starting on 31 August needs to be cancelled then I can cancel and bank the points at the same time.

I'm new to all this and are seriously considering buying DVC for our future November stays (with possible future summer stays as well, maybe August). Is it in our best interest to book now? Or wait till the start of the new year?? Thank you!

If you are going to be traveling in August and November, a Oct or Dec UY is not for you and therefore you will not be getting any 2016 points with a direct purchase at this point.

Are you asking when to buy? Well, if you want to book that November trip as a new member at 11 months out you should have your purchase completed by/ before December. Although, some people have had luck getting help from DVC booking their first trip inside the 11 month window as a first time member benefit.

As for UY, I think you would want June or possibly August (but not if you are thinking you want to travel in early August). June is probably a safer choice imho.

If you have the means right now, you should be looking for an June or August UY for the amount of points you need, minus a 25 point add on. The resale process can take up to 90 days to complete, sometimes longer. You can get lucky and finish in 30 to 45 days but that isn't the normal time frame.

The only way you book now is to purchase direct now. You wouldn't be able to book a resale purchase purchase for 2-3 months given the closing timeframe. That said, if you're asking the question whether you should wait until after the new year then you must be talking about August/November 2018 booking and in that case you have time for a resale but you should start looking now. I agree with the other poster in that a April or June UY would be very good for your travel times, it covers summer, fall, and even Christmas. Alot depends on your preferences as to which resort to buy but I will say that if November is your primary travel time the buy at the resort you want to be at and don't expect to be able to switch.

Thank you! We'd like to buy direct. Didn't know if buying now or waiting till the new year was wiser.

If you are set on buying direct, then my advice is to wait. Keep an eye on the forums for word of a pending price increase (or an incentive offer) and if/when that happens, be prepared to call and purchase right away. Use the time to be sure you want to go direct and more importantly, that DVC is right for your family.

Continue your research and learn the system ins and outs. A good place for that is right here on the DIS DVC Boards. Spend some time with the DVC Resource Center, the threads listed below and keep the questions coming - I'm sure you'll have many. :)

If you aren't already, play with the point charts and plan future trips. Include the cost of tickets, food souvenirs and transportation to be sure you have a handle on the additional costs you may be taking on.

Good luck!

Honestly, it probably doesn't make much of a difference to wait or act now. If you're buying Poly then you're at some risk they will sell out. If you're buying an already sold out resort like VGF or BWV then you need to call them and pretty much take it when they have it. Otherwise just buy whenever suits you but before your use year to maximize what you're getting. If you're Poly or CCV I would suggest a fixed week during your most preferred time in November. It will help add a little value to the contract if you ever need to sell.
