OK so i went to costco and bought the frozen meatballs, there are 140 meatballs - i assume they are small, but i just want enough for my family so figure the bag should be good for about 3 - 4 meals anyway, the recipe i have says 1 bottle fo bbq sauce 1/2 jar of grape jelly and 1 large bag of frozen meatballs (does this mean the 140 meatballs) or are there different size bags else where?......

what measurements would you recommend for me?

thanx

lisa

I'd figure 6-8 meatballs per person, and extra if you want leftovers. Walmart sells smaller bags (maybe 50).

There are a zillion different size bags. The two grocery stores near me, for example, each have them BOGOF this week and it's two different brands and size bags.

I alway brown the meatballs in a big skillet first -- not sure if that's necessary. I use a bottle of chili sauce (not barbecue although I'm sure that would work). The recipe in my 30-year-old Betty Crocker cookbook says a 12 oz jar of chili sauce and 10 oz jar of grape jelly for 60 meatballs. It also calls for a dash of worchestershire, which I put sometimes. Have also seen a recipe that has a spoonful of lemon juice. I always just throw the stuff in and it's fine even though the amounts vary each time.

I'm taking these to a Super Bowl party Sunday. I'll probably end up buying four of the small bags and use three, so we'll have them at home at a later date. I don't do that much any more since I read the fat content - yikes.

I have a bag in the freezer that I bought from Wal-Mart that contains 80 meatballs. I recently made a similar recipe (ketchup instead BBQ). I used a little under half a bottle of each for probably about 20 meatballs. I'd say for a using a full bottle of each 40-50 meatballs would be good. If you guys really like extra sauce then go with the lower end.

Ditto on the chili sauce vs bbq. You only need enough liquid to coat all of the meatballs.

Another use for them is meatball sandwiches. I add a jar of spaghetti sauce to the meatballs and just cook all day. Yum. If there is a lot of sauce left over then I make spaghetti the next day.

I saw this receipe and was a little leary. I had never heard of it. ( I know where have I been hiding). So today I made them, omg. they are soo good. will have to run to the store in the am to buy more meatballs to take to the party tomorrow. Thank You.

I dont use BBQ Sauce with mine.. I use chili sauce, ketchup and grape jelly. I just made them last week. Just dont forget to stir them..

I made a batch for after my grandmathers wake.. so I put them in at midnight but fell asleep before I could stir everything together... so I had a bunch of meatballs that were REALLY sweet that were on top of the grape jelly. :scared1:

ok, I know this is a stupid question- but I have looked for Chili sauce and haven't been able to find it. What brand and is it like hot sauce or is it usually near tacos stuff?

Chili sauce is usually found in the condiments section. It comes in a bottle shaped like Heinz Cocktail sauce. The brand that is big around here is Heinz Chili sauce, but I know that there are store brands too.

Actually, I am not sure if any other "big brand" makes chili sauce. :confused3

I found it right next to the cocktail sauce. I mixed the jelly and sauce and cooked on low first before I mixed them in the crockpot with the meatballs. so is low okay to serve them at 6pm or do I need to up it to high? they are the frozen kind. thanks

I don't use BBQ sauce either. I use Ragu Spagetti sauce instead and it tastes great.

I heat up the grape jelly on the stove until it's nice an runny. This way, it's not lumpy and gross in the crock pot. Then pour the ragu sauce in with it and mix it up. Once it's mixed, I put it on top of the meatballs in the crockpot and turn it all on and mix as needed.

After seeing this thread I just sent DH to the store for jelly and chili sauce lol

i used 3/4 jar of barbeque sauce and about grape jelly - i put it all in this morning at 10am and will eat at about 6pm

will let you know how it turns out.

Next time, try Ragu sauce. We found that it tasted so much better. Now my family makes them as well with Ragu.

These Will Taste, But In The Future I Will Try Both The Chili Sauce And Jelly As Well As The Ragu Sauce And Jelly.

i didn't love it - not sure if it was the actual meatballs from costco i was not thrilled about - seemed a bit spicy or the barbeque w/jelly - next time i'll try the chili sauce w/jelly
