Hi! I'm on the phone with family and we're REALLY thinking about finally doing this.

Say I bank all of this year's points. Then, I find great airfare. Can I borrow next year's points to go this year?

Thanks!:goodvibes

You sure can. but just remember that you won't be able to "re-bank" this years points again next year. So you'll just have to "suffer" through another Disney trip next year.

Great. So if I borrow enough of next year's points to go "last minute" this year with next year's points, I will just have to use all of this years points next year plus the rest of next years points unless I bank those.

this is complicated, but once I get it, I think I'll understand.;)

Thank you for your quick response!!!!:worship:

I'd hold off on banking (wait until your banking window is nearing) as long as you can in your situation. If you do find that great airfare then you can just use this year's points. If you end up not going next year then you can bank next years points. I personally wouldn't want to lose banked points although you could rent them out.

Make sure that you are really straight on it, as it does get confusing and pay attention to the banking deadlines.

Thank heavens we have a Feb. UY. Except for January, the calendar year and our Use Year are usually the same year. I think a Dec UY would keep me in a constant state of confusion.

Are you already members, or wanting to purchase a membership? What is your UY? You can bank your points up to four months before they expire -- so don't rush into anything you don't have to. If there are some special circumstances you might want to be more specific (I wouldn't want us to steer you wrong because we aren't sure of the facts).

Hi! We're not members yet - but we're going through all possible scenarios right now that we can think of. So glad to hear that the banking window is four months before the end of the UY!

Thanks to everyone for writing back so quickly - really helped us out! :goodvibes

If you plan a lot of 'last minute' trips, you may want to reconsider. Timeshares in general aren't designed for last minute trips, certainly not the
"wow, I found a great airfare for next weekend, let's go" kind of trips.

To be sure, you'll see occasional reports on the boards that people were able to get a villa on relatively short notice. But in most cases, members book 11 or 7 months in advance, and your choices even at 3 or 4 months out are going to be sharply limited. And at certain times of year (like December) it may be difficult to book a room at 7 months out.

We are also considering a DVC purchase and I have a question regarding use year too!

How exactly do you determine what is the best use year for you?

We like to travel to WDW usually in the spring and sometimes in the fall...so what do you think would work for us? thanks!

Do you have a specific month that you normally travel, or does it change from year to year? Let's say you travel in April of every year -- you might want to consider getting a UY of March or April. That way you've got several months to either re-use or bank your points if for some reason you had to cancel a reservation due to an emergency or schedule change.

Well I think it will change over time. Right now my kids are elementary age. Last year and this fall they are missing school for our vacations. Last year was May and this year is October. We decided to make it the last time until they graduate in 2016, 2018, & 2020..yikes! They are getting too old to miss so much school. So we have decided to travel next June for our birthdays. Today I talked with DVC and they offered me a December use year. Is that a good idea? Do we have to take what they offer or can we request a different month?

Thanks for the help thus far!

December would not be a good UY if you travel in October as you would only have until 11/30 to reuse the points if for some reason you had to cancel you trip. But it could work if you think you will start going in June...however you should still talk to your guide about getting a different UY that would fall before June (maybe April would work better for spring or summer travel).

Ok thanks! I will ask my guide!
