Hi all,

When you book a DVC property do you have to already have your points, or is this where "borrowing" comes in?

Example: Let's say I own at WLV and have a Dec UY. I want to stay December 2010, and of course I want to book at 11 months out, so booking Jan 2009. Will I have to have my points in my account in Jan 2009 to make the booking? If so, is this where I would borrow my upcoming December 2009 points?

You can always book 11 months out at home resort and use points even though they have not yet actually been issued. With a Dec use year, when booking in Jan 2009 for Dec 2009, your "current" use year points for that trip will be ones issued in Dec 2009 (and when you call in Jan 09, you will not be borrowing those at all to use them), and ones issued in Dec 2008, if you also want to use those for a Dec 09 trip, will need to be banked.

Way to think of points use is to always look at time you will be there, not time you call to reserve.

The short answer is that all of your points are already in your account. Use year doesn't matter for making reservations. You can always book 11 months prior to your check in date for your home resort.

If you are booking a December 2010 vacation at your home resort, your 11 month window opens in January 2010. Since your vacation falls within your 2010 use year, you may use 2010 use year points to make the reservation, even if you call to make the reservation before that use year begins.

Make yourself a little chart like this -

2008 use year points are good for vacations between 12/1/2008 and 11/30/2009.
2009 use year points are good for vacations between 12/1/2009 and 11/30/2010.
2010 use year points are good for vacations between 12/1/2010 and 11/30/2011.
etc.

You just need to match your vacation dates to your use year to see which use year the points will come from. You can bank points one use year ahead. You can borrow from one use year ahead.

So for a December 2010 vacation, you could use points you banked from 2009 or borrow points from 2011 in addition to the points from your 2010 use year.
