My DH has a coworker that had a baby girl. I saw such a cute baby's first doll, soft, with cute hair, a little komono onesie, and a monogrammed diaper. The only ones they have are white. Some with blond, red, or brown hair. Dad is black, mom is white(I think) I was looking for and hoping for a tan doll, but no luck. Should I get something else? THey had a few other cute things I'd get, nothing as cute as the doll though(especially since it's her first girl after 2 boys) I really don't want to get an outfit either.

I probably wouldn't buy it. Can you get a non-white one somewhere else?

They might enjoy getting a cute girl outfit, being this is the first girl after two boys.

I like the Helen Oxenbury board books depicting multiracial children.

I have a bi-racial DD and she had all sorts of dolls, white, black, chinese....... I would get the doll with the brown hair if you really like it. Just like you can play with friends that don't always look like you, you can also play with dolls that don't look just like you.

I actually think the American Girl Bitty Babies are really cute, and they come in a full range of skin colours. They're a bit more expensive than other dolls, but you can keep giving more accessories and outfits every year until the little girl outgrows the doll.

I would buy it if it is cute. I had a black baby doll well over 40 yrs ago and loved it. I actually asked for it. My DD had a black American Girl doll. Children can have dolls of all races. If you buy a FP little people set it will come with both white and black and some times if enough people in the set Asian.

But the Doll it will mean more to them than another outfit that will get worn and given away.

A friend of mine has 4 bi-racial kids (white/black), and a house full of toys for 4 kids. They literally had dolls of every color. I really don't think kids care.

The funniest thing ever was when one of the little girls took apart two Barbie dolls (one white/one black) and put them back together so they "looked just like her". It was a crazy looking doll--we still tease her about it, and she is in college now.

This is also the same child that launched 100 rockets in the living room when she was 4--she took all my girl friends tampons and launched them out of their applicators. I was dropping something off at their house and got to see with my own eyes the living room full of "rockets".

:lmao: That's hilarious!

Our family is not biracial, but my husband is Greek-American and I am Welsh-American. My boys are light complexioned with light eyes and my daughter is more olive complexioned, dark hair, dark eyes--she looks rather exotic. DD had quite an array of dolls growing up--Elena(Latina), Pocohontas(Native American), Josefina(Mexican), and Felicity(white.) All of them endured the requisite hair-cut and head-first dunking in the toilet. Race was not a factor, as far as we could determine.

I would think any doll would be great- just an f.y.i. never give a down syndrome doll to a child with down's- someone did for me-being thoughtful I am sure- but the eyes were squinty, the ears mishapen and low-Whoever made it from the "specialty" store took all the characteristic features and put them into the "rag" doll. Turned my stomach and threw it away! My baby was so cute! If you are unsure- pick another gift.

As mom of a biracial child, get whatever doll you want. The baby is both black and white and will probably identify with both races, especially while she is young. There is also a great range of complexions in biracial children, so even if you buy a "biracial" doll, it may not look like the child. My DS has skin almost as white as mine and blue eyes, but I also know biracial children who show hardly any sign of their white heritage. Most fall right in between those two extremes.

If you really want a more "tan" doll, here are some recommended for babies.

How about a Bitty Baby from American Girl?

For a little baby I would choose something other than a doll. Maybe an animal blanket or something like that.

Me too - I'd choose something with a texture and maybe some noise (rattle or crinkeling, etc) in it. Babies love new textures and sounds

Thanks all so much for the ideas and websites which are great by the way. Since it was my husbands coworker/friend, I let him have the final say. I brought back the doll and found this:

http://www.zubels.com/ (fast forward to the cat), also note the pink flamingo, very sweet indeed! Now I think Mr Liam will need one for his birthday, they are very cute.

:cutie:I hope Madelyn likes them!
