My job had me down by Westchester a couple weeks ago for the whole week (one of the many reasons that I haven't had much of a chance to get on here lately!), and I took the opportunity to visit one of my favorite places, New York City, a couple of the nights I was there. (There was a train station less than a mile from our hotel, with a 60-minute ride, which really isn't all that bad.) I hadn't been for probably 10-12 years or so, since I took my then-girlfriend-now-wife for her first visit, when I had no money but I managed to get us a room at the Waldorf. :)

The first night was the Sunday I arrived; unfortunately traffic on the way there slowed me down an hour or two, plus I started later than planned, so by the time I arrived, it was getting somewhat late. Funnily enough, NYC on a Sunday night is, photography-wise, not unlike Disney - there are tourists (and locals) taking photos everywhere, DSLRs all over the place, etc. I was trying to keep a pretty light package, I mainly used my 16-50mm F2.8 (in no small part due to the weathersealing) as well as a bit of fisheye. Here's your view as you get off the train in Grand Central.

The main lobby of Grand Central.

NYC200907-003.jpg

A lonely bicycle against the motion of the cabs... (don't be fooled, the bikes often move faster than the cars!)

NYC200907-006.jpg

NYC is a city of textures... which I tried to capture a little bit of in this shot.

NYC200907-009.jpg

I found the World of Disney store (the only one outside WDW and DL), which I knew would be closed, but I didn't know if I would have a chance to come back another night. (I did, that'll be in the second day's photos.) It is apparently closing next year, so this would probably be my only chance to see it.

NYC200907-014.jpg

I like the reflections of the cabs here.

NYC200907-015.jpg

I found an Aston Martin DB9 on one of the streets; for my money, one of the most beautiful cars built in modern times.

NYC200907-020.jpg

The Trump Tower is still a draw for tourists.

NYC200907-022.jpg

Some trees were blown over in front of the Ferrari/Maserati dealer.

NYC200907-026.jpg

Speaking of Ferrari... here's the California...

NYC200907-028.jpg

NYC200907-030.jpg

How about a $100 tube of pencils? :scared1:

NYC200907-031.jpg

This one is kind of interesting on a technical level... the WB was screwy on this; to get it right for the statues meant turning the background completely blue. Since there was no blue in the foreground, what I did was, in Lightroom, knock the saturation level of just blue down to almost nothing; in effect, turning the blue area into black & white. Not perfect, but much better than the original.

NYC200907-036.jpg

I hopped on a subway to the East Village and tracked down one of my favorite burger joints in the world, Paul's Da Burger Joint. This may not look like much, but it's a half-pound of pure beefy heaven. :woohoo: (That white stuff is mayo, BTW.)

NYC200907-044.jpg

The blue in the sky is lightning... this was another time that I was grateful to have weathersealing. (I seem to be catching a lot of rain when I want to take photos!)

NYC200907-047.jpg

I headed back uptown and wandered over to Times Square.

NYC200907-059.jpg

The Paramount Building, home of touristy restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe and Bubba Gump.

NYC200907-064.jpg

A recruiting station for New York's finest.

NYC200907-066.jpg

The beautiful Chrysler Tower as seen over Grand Central.

NYC200907-068.jpg

Getting ready to hop on the train back to the hotel.

NYC200907-070.jpg

While walking around, I happened to see a Crumb's bakery and decided to pick up one of their famous cupcakes, a Key Lime one to be specific. Here is decadence at F1.2.

NYC200907-071.jpg

I headed back two nights later and was able to catch a few more stores open, including the World of Disney. More shots soon...

Cool pics. :thumbsup2 Love the textures and Times Sq shots. I'm overdue for a trip.

Excellent series-

No Artie Lange?

I second that statement.

Very, very nice so far! Thanks for sharing them.

Great shots !!!! ... particularly enjoyed the shots of Grand Central Station. I used to go there twice a year when I was young. My mom worked for a bridal shop and I would go with the owner and mom twice a year to buy the new lines of dresses. I never saw much more of the city than GCS and the garment district but it was exciting for me from about age 9-12 to ride the train into NYC and see what I did. Would love to go back and see more of it. I haven't been back other than to see a few shows on Broadway and they were quick to the shows and home kind of trips.

Thanks all!

Gdad: I didn't see the Artie Lange nor the Baba Booey cupcake... being Sunday night, the selection was limited. Based on what I've read, I don't think I'd want the Artie one anyway - I'm not a big chocolate cake/frosting fan. I did listen to his audiobook on the drive down - :scared1: talk about your cautionary tale! Oh, with the cupcakes, I had forgotten that Crumbs puts a pit of cream in the middle of the cupcake - that was just too much, and this from a guy who lives for the Main St Bakery cinnamon rolls and turnovers. I had to eat around the cream. :) It was good but nothing extraordinary.

Here's a few more from night one. I've been playing a bunch with gallery settings recently so hopefully my shots are coming through a little sharper than in the past.

"Trump Ice Cream Parlor"? :rotfl2:

NYC200907-017.jpg

Todd, here's another DB9 shot for you. :thumbsup2

NYC200907-021.jpg

The Mercedes/Maybach dealer had a rotating display for the cars.

Groucho,

Nice shots, especially the DB9 shots! (Count me as another fan!) I know how much our cardiac surgeons make (license plate "HARTFIXR")...they can afford a DB9! :thumbsup2

The street scenes are what make me want to visit again. My last trip was in 1990 and I actually made the mistake of driving in....not again!

The parking garage was an intersting shot too. Would love to know what a spot goes for a month now....

Keep 'em coming!

Fantastic shots, i've never been to NY (hopefully June next year i'll finally get to go) i always love looking at picture from there.
I didn't know the World of Disney store is closing, i hope it's still open in june next year :)

Amazing! I have always wanted to go to NYC to walk around... It seems like such a wonderful place to visit... Your pictures are absolutely beautiful... Can't wait to see Day 2! :thumbsup2

Fabulous. Simply fabulous. You could publish any one of those in a "Day in the Life of New York" book. No one does fisheye like you, Groucho! I've never been to NYC, but your pictures make me want to go!! Thanks so much for sharing.

Great pictures Groucho! We'll be in the city tomorrow. We are taking the kids the the Intrepid Sea and Air Museum. Hopefully I'll get some interesting shots. Don't know how much time we'll get to wander around the city. Although DH and the kids don't have a lot of patience for me trying to set shots and change lenses. (I need a pouty smily to put here).

Great series! Thanks for sharing. I've never been to NYC, but it is on the some day list. Probably when the kids are a little older and would actually enjoy it.

Thanks again everyone! I was lucky, in a way, to have two evenings to walk around completely at my own pace and stop and look at anything I felt like it, with no agenda to speak of. If I had more time, I would have liked to hit a museum or two or maybe finally get over to see the Statue of Liberty... maybe next trip!

I've got about half of night two's shots uploaded now... On this night, it wasn't as rainy so I used a few lenses - the 31mm F1.8, the 10-17mm fisheye, the 16-50mm F2.8, and I got a fair amount of use out of the Nikkor 105mm F2.5, too, since I don't really have a K-mount prime in that range outside of my Lester Dine, which is quite a bit larger due to being a 1:1 prime. Plus, it was an excuse to play with the Nikkor a little bit - it's quite a nice old lens, for being from one of those third party companies. :teeth: You can usually tell which was used by the exif - 105mm is not a choice for manual lenses (when entering focal length for image stabilization), so the Nikkor photos are coded as 100mm.

Here's an Atlas, I don't remember from where.

NYC200907-076.jpg

I made it to the World of Disney store when it was open...

NYC200907-079.jpg

I bought one of these shirts - you don't see the classic skinny Donald very often.

NYC200907-081.jpg

I wasn't ready to switch lenses so this one is framed pretty tight - this is a full-size Minnie as the Statue of Liberty.

NYC200907-082.jpg

I did a few shots looking out the second-story window looking past the characters that made up the outside sign.

NYC200907-085.jpg

NYC200907-086.jpg

NYC200907-087.jpg

This was in an open area between floors two and three.

NYC200907-091.jpg

A couple merchandise photos.

NYC200907-101.jpg

FAO Schwartz was closed so I wasn't able to check them out this trip, I had been looking forward to seeing the Muppet Whatnot Workshop in person - to see where mine was born. :) There was a display in the front window about it... again, maybe next trip! FAO is at one corner of Central Park, which I walked along the south edge of for a little while. (I was getting too tired and not feeling great so I didn't go in.)

NYC200907-104.jpg

I'm not sure which of these I prefer...

NYC200907-106.jpg

NYC200907-107.jpg

There's just a few more photos to do through, hopefully I'll finish those in the next couple days!

I have to say this one is one of my favorites!! :thumbsup2 But in all seriousness, GREAT shots!! I'm hoping to go up to the New England area some day and spend a few days in NYC, Boston, maybe Philadelphia, etc.

Beautiful photographs :thumbsup2!

Did you read the tag on the Aston Martin? Reads to me like he would be a heart surgeon. Must rake in some pretty good cash.

Thanks again everyone; now I'll finally finish posting pics. Nothing like some idiot pulling in front of your wife's car and totalling it to keep you distracted... (everyone's fine, but what a pain.)

When we last left me, I was outside Central Park. I didn't really have the energy or time to head in so I skirted the south edge then headed back downtown. Here's another example of what I mean when I say that it's a city of textures...

NYC200907-108.jpg

NYC200907-109.jpg

I made my way back to Times Square and stopped into the Toys R Us store there, which features a three-story ferris wheel as you walk in.

NYC200907-115.jpg

...each car on the ferris wheel is styled after a different toy or subject.

NYC200907-112.jpg

Shaggy seems to be saying "why are you focusing on the bars instead of my face?" The perils of manual focusing on a moving object...

NYC200907-128.jpg

It wasn't easy to do a panning shot but I kind of like how this one turned out.

NYC200907-114.jpg

In the back of the second floor, you have some of the "boys" stuff... Legos, Jurassic Park dinosaurs, and superheroes.

NYC200907-118.jpg

NYC200907-124.jpg

NYC200907-126.jpg

NYC200907-125.jpg

NYC200907-123.jpg

I wandered around for a while then headed back out. I got another panning shot of a Subaru STi (I'm a fan, I'm on my second one!)

NYC200907-130.jpg

It was getting late and I had to get up early for work so I made my way back to Grand Central for my hour-long return train ride.

NYC200907-133.jpg

NYC200907-134.jpg

NYC200907-135.jpg

NYC200907-137.jpg

That's it! If you would like to see more, there are many pics that I didn't post here on the NYC trip section of my gallery. I hope you enjoyed!
