I live in the panhandle of FL and had to drive down to Tampa yesterday. I have made this trip many times so am used to things being a certain way. I was struck by how many people were getting ticketed for speeding. Especially between Gainesville and Ocala. It was a mix of FHP and Sheriff Dept and even saw a few city patrol cars. Most were working in what I call "wolf packs". One would be sitting in a clearing in the woods beside the road, he would be the one using radar to record speeds. He would then call the car's description up to one of the 2 or 3 cars waiting about 1/2 mile up the road....they were the ones who would pull you. All this was going on during the daytime, last night on my way back I didn't see any similar activity going on.

So, if you are driving down on I75 you might want the check your speed. Nobody wants to start their vacation with a speeding ticket. ;)

BTW, I didn't notice similar activity on I10, seemed it was just on I75.

they do that around here too sometimes but move it around but hit the I20 more than the other roads - sometimes having 2 sets of these about 30 miles apart so people think OK I pass the speedtrap so they speed up to get caught in the next section

That's the stretch of road where they have aerial enforcement. They have a plane that identifies speeders and the cops are a mile or so down the road pulling people over by the dozens.

I find it very, very, very easy to never ever get a speeding ticket, save gas, and avoid endangering the lives of others in my car and on the road. And we love the drive down 75!

They do that around 465 here in Indianapolis. I have been pulled over before and asked to see the radar. The cop said that he reset it when I knew that it was another officer that had recorded my speed. Since they did not have my license plate # and I drive a fairly common vehicle (Red For Ranger) I told the officer that I believe he was mistaken for pulling me over. He gave me the ticket and I went into court and fought it. Since they could not supply evidence that I was speeding when I asked about the radar the ticket was tossed out.

I do have friends that are police officers (metro and state) that have told me when they work in "packs" like they do, that if you ask to see the radar that they are to show you that you are/were in fact speeding. Not sure if this is the case everywhere but I know it to be fact in Indiana. :)

Thanks for the update, my DW (has a bit of a lead foot) is driving :drive: down next week to pick our daughter (just completed her Disney internship) at WDW.

Yeah, us too. BUT - my husband was driving at 74 MPH on I75 in just the stretch the OP referred to. I was impatient to get to Disney World and encouraged him to go up to 76 MPH. He refused. Guess what - he was pulled over with the needle on 74 MPH. The cop said my husband was going 81 MPH. If you know my husband, you would know he never goes that fast, even if it was legal. That's what my husband told the cop. So the ticket became doing 76 in a 70 zone. That was enough to get some money but not enough for the big money of doing over 10 MPH over the posted limit. Funny how things change.

Point is - north Florida cops are out in force. Slow down if you are inclined to speed. And if you are in south Georgia, do the same. Georgia has a super speeder law so you can be charged an extra $200 if you are really going through the state.

Disney World will still be there no matter when you arrive.

We have never seen as many speed traps in all our trips to Disney as we did on our way home Monday and Tuesday in FL, GA, TN, KY, and IL.
South GA is always a problem - especially in Turner and Tift Counties - we have seen as many as 4 county sheriff cars in a ten mile stretch. Not only will you be hit with super speeder law ($200 extra) if you are going 15 or more miles above the limit), but their fines for regular speeding are outrageous. They are very good at hiding, sitting perpendicular to the road.
Talking about hidden speed traps, in IL on 57, there is one spot where the state troopers sit outside their car on a bridge over 57. All you see is their hat. The chase car is on the on ramp on the other side of the bridge.

Heard a funny story on NPR one day. They had asked people to email ways they talked their way out of a ticket. A GA trooper actually sent in something. He said he was sitting in his favorite spot in southern GA and after an hour or two this big white Caddy flies by with NY plates. He pulls the guy over and figures he's "fit the stereotype" by swaggering up to the car while tugging on his service belt. when the driver rolled down his window the officer said "I've been waiting all day for someone like you" without missing a beat the driver responded "Well, I got here as fast as I could" :rotfl2: When he quit laughing he let him off with a warning.

BTW, I realize that NOT speeding is the obvious way to NOT get a ticket but I also realize that for many of you that that last stretch of I75 can tempt you to push it just a little.

Hmm. I have made the trip down and back from Michigan many times for almost 30 years now and have never noticed anything like this. I did get cited in Florida once, while there for non-Disney purposes, but it was for an equipment violation (a rear light had gone out). The ticket was cancelled at a Miami-area police station after I showed an officer that the problem had been corrected. But I have never received a speeding ticket during any part of a Disney trip.

With state and local government budgets the way they are, it's not hard to see how this situation could come about, though. Good to be aware of.

We don't have a state income tax here in Florida so we have to make it up some other way. Your contributions are appreciated.

The weekend of May 5th, my husband got two tickets within an hour. He was clocked at 87mph and 91mph. :drive: He has a lead foot for sure. I kept telling him to slow down. He is one that you have to "show" him because "telling" him will not click.

Wow! Thanks for sharing that. Ill be driving straight down 75 from TN in about 3 weeks and I tend to have a lead foot. Ill have to set my cruise control at 70 and be done with it

at least in ohio the state highway patrol will generally give you 6-9 over.. crap.. at 74 and getting a ticket - not good. Cruise control here we come!
