My son played King Triton in his school's production of Disney's Little Mermaid, Jr. last week with 4 performances. He's worked back stage for the past three years and decided this year, his last year at the school, he would try out for the only non-singing major role and GOT IT! They've been practicing since September. Everyone did a great job. I was surprised at how well my son did because he would never want to read lines with me. I had nothing to go by. I was a nervous wreck and my knees were literally knocking the night of his performance. :scared:

I must have sounded like an idiot when people came up to me after the play and tell me how wonderful he did because I would answer with an, "I know; right?"

I still get sick to my stomach when my 19 y/o dd performs. It's so hard watching them and hoping and praying that nothing 'bad' happens. But, congrats on your ds's first onstage performance. Good for him.

You can't tell by the picture but he had to wear a long heavy "skirt" that had a mermaid tail attached at his waist and kinda floated down the back. At first he was not happy with his costume but I just told he that he just needed to rock that skirt and be glad that he had the turtleneck too.:goodvibes

Congratulations :thumbsup2

Congratulations!!! Isn't it great when our kids surprise us like that?! I know how you feel- with your response! I was the same way last year when my son, a junior in HS at the time, auditioned for his HS production of Les Mis. He can sing, very well- but had never EVER stepped on stage before, and had never acted. He just wanted a part in the company, and was cast as Thenardier! It was a huge role for him! He never practiced anything, including his songs, in front of us, so we had no idea how he was going to be. After the first night, I was BAWLING because I had NO IDEA that my son was that talented!! He blew me away!!! I had the same response when people came up to me after the show- I was just so unprepared for how good the kid was!! The irony of it all is that my son is very shy and quiet and serious. Thenardier is...not. And the next two parts he was cast as- funny, loud, and OLD guys!!

I am assuming your son is in middle school? Encourage him to audition in HS. Theatre is a great bonding experience. My son made some great friends through theatre- lifelong friends. They are like a family- moreso than any other activity he's been involved in.

I didn't mention in the OP but I cried through the first performance. Leading up to the week prior to the performance, I really thought I would need to medicate myself.

Also, we picked a high school with a drama department. :thumbsup2

I understand that completely :) I always drink a glass of wine before both of my boys perform (my 8th grader is in drama too :) ) :thumbsup2

My daughter - who has a sweet little voice and was either in the chorus or had a small part in the first three high school plays - auditioned for and got the part of Tracy in Hairspray her senior year. I was absolutely a wreck the whole semester - everything from worrying about her ability to learn the lines and dancing to worrying that she would pass out from heatstroke on stage (Tracy's a big girl and they had DD who,is a size 6 wear padding under her costumes.)

I went to the final dress rehearsal just so I could watch once and see how bad it was going to be:). OMG. She opened her mouth and belted out the first song and I burst into tears. I can still tear up just hearing the music...:)

My friends said it was more fun watching me in the audience than watching the show:) It was so wonderful to see her perform. I had no idea she could do it - she never sang like that at home! I was so proud of her!
