My family and I are spending the Holidays in the Boston area ( our first trip there) anyway, we currently have a hotel in the Salem area ( the Marriott Peabody) and just found a great rate on a hotel in Dedham (sp?). The map says it is 10 miles south of Boston. How long will it ACTUALLY take to get to Boston from this area and also the Cambridge/Salem area? Not just mileage but actual time? Also how far from Dedham area to the Peabody area?

Thank you so much.........

Kristie

OK--let's see. Dedham is slightly south of Boston. Peabody is north of the city. Salem is well north of the city as well.

If you were travelling during NON-Rush Hour traffic you could probably get to Boston in about 20 minutes driving, depending on where you were going, if you were driving. There is also a Commuter Rail train station in Westwood which is the next town over from Dedham, and some hotels may have shuttle service to the train station.

Sorry, I'm not a lot of help.

It all depends on the time of day (and which way you go. There's more than one way to get there)

Dedham to Cambridge with no traffic; the quickest time will be 25 minutes or so. It's entirely possible that it could be an hour during rush hour.

A Heads up for you; Cambridge/Salem are not next to each other, and in fact aren't that close. You'd be lucky to get from Cambridge to Salem (depending on where you start in either town and where you end) in 30-45 minutes depending on the time of day. It could easily take you 10-15 minutes just to get out of Cambridge alone depending on where you started from.

Dedham to Peabody; 30-40 minutes with no traffic. Could easily be over an hour during rush hour.

Just remember that Rt. 95 and Rt. 1 will both be murder during rush hour. Try to avoid travelling on them between 7-9 and 3-6:30 if at all possible. Otherwise, expect heavy delays. AM 1030 on the radio gives excellent traffic reports every ten minutes, once you decipher the actual roads they're talking about.

I hope this helps!

Salem is especially difficult to get to, since there are no highways that go there. The closest, MA 128, has an exist in Peabody, but there were only very narrow roads connecting Peabody and Salem when we lived there. If Salem is going to be a main focus of your trip, I'd aim to stay in an area that is more easily accessible from both Boston and Salem, such as Danvers.

We have 3 days....Boston for 1 day ...cambridge for 1 day and salem for 1 day.

Which hotel would you stay in???????
$120.00 savings in Dedham.......

You'll chew up a good part of that savings in gas if all you're doing in Dedham is using the hotel. I'd look for a hotel on the north shore around the peabody/saugus area if you're looking to spend time in Boston/Cambridge/ Salem. You should find something cheaper than Boston/Cambridge and probably equivalent to what you're paying in Dedham.

Gas is free so no worry there. Just the hotel and the food is what we will pay for. No we will not be spending anytime in the Dedham area...just using the area for a cheap hotel.

Any more advice or information is GREATLY appreciated.

That being the case I'd definitely not stay in Dedham. It really isn't worth the bother of the commute. The Marriott Peabody is a very good choice.

Try the Courtyard Marriott Danvers. It is about 5 minutes further up on 128 from the Marriott Peabody. The Courtyard is smaller than the Peabody one. It' s style is colonial America. It's located behind the Liberty Tree Mall and about 10 minutes to Salem. From there, Cambridge/Boston could take about 30 minutes.

If you plan on only Boston, Cambridge and Salem, do not stay in Dedham. The traffic going from the south of Boston to the north is brutal especially with our Big Dig tunnels down!

What Hotel in Dedham?? We were married at the Hilton in Dedham and loved it there. We have also stayed and the peabody marriot (for another wedding).

If those are the locations, you could look at a more central town, woburn and stoneham have hotels, as well and they are easily accessible to the roads that will lead you to boston and to Salem. It has been soooo long since I've been to Salem..definately need to make a trip soon. I grew up about 10 minutes north of Boston, but moved to the "country" :goodvibes

I live on the border with Woburn. I recommend not staying in Woburn, at least not on Industrial Parkway, Mishawam Road, nor at the Red Roof Inn on Commerce Way.
