we are staring to get the papers to go for our real ID
one thing they ask for is something with your name and address like a bill
well the bills all come in just DH name and address
but there are some things that come in both our names
like theres bank things now can we use that one paper both of us or do we each need our own

I assume I need our marriage license for proof of name change from the BC

besides travel what else do you need a real ID for we have passports so even for domestic travel we can use them

when would these expire then would the date from our orginial ones just go on the new one or would it be I think its 8 years when you renew

anything else you could pass on
thanks

I’m not running out getting one, I’ll use my passport card or passport for domestic travel (they are also real ID).

You and your husband can use documents from the same source (such as a bank). If there's a chance that you and your husband will be at two different counters, you should bring 2 different documents (for example, January and February statements).

You should bring your marriage license to prove a name change if you are also presenting your birth certificate. You may not be asked to show it (I wasn't when I got my Real ID) but it's better to have it in case you need it.

Real IDs will be required to access certain government facilities as well as at airports. I think a passport would also work anywhere a Real ID is used, but I don't typically carry my passport book unless I'm leaving the US and I don't have a passport card, so I appreciate having a Real ID.

I would guess the renewal date will be based on the renewal date for a new license/state ID. I got my Real ID when I renewed my driver's license, so I don't know what would have happened if I still had a few years on my license.

:offtopic: Change a utility bill into your name now. If your husband passes first and you need to move everything into your own name this will help making things smoother. Outfits that ask for utility bills to prove residency besides the government include banks, credit card companies and credit unions.

The rules can be state dependent and might be interpreted differently based on individual personnel. When I got my first Real ID driver license a few years ago, I tried to use a credit card mailing (from my latest credit card) that had my name and address, but they didn't accept that. They did accept a credit card statement. I came prepared with a lot of stuff though. I didn't want to wait 3-4 hours (which were typically at the time) only to have to come back and do it all over again. And it was very difficult to get an appointment back then.

At least in my case, I later had an address change and wasn't required to provide anything with my new address when I renewed. I came prepared with a bank statement and carried a current passport card. I had to do it in person though. I think they considered proof of address to be that I was able to receive the driver license at the new address. The process may vary depending on state.

There are quite a few documents that are considered sufficient.

There's been talk about places other than airport checkpoints. Apparently each federal agency can set its own requirements, but I'd hope the TSA list would cover it.

Good question...our Yuma border crossing back into the US will accept driver's license.. but now will they???... I wonder if the US will have personal now on the US side as you enter to tell you that the rules have changed... for now they also take expired passport

Check your state website for which documents can be used to obtain a Real ID. Mine shows a variety of different documents and you can see what is required. Check the TSA website regarding which documents are acceptable in place of Real ID. I believe you can use your passport if you don't have a Real ID after the deadline for air travel. For access to govt/military facilities should check their websites to see what is required.
