Hi everyone! Sorry if these have been asked before, I'm new to all of this.

We are 2 weeks away from our trip and we found out a few days ago that our 16yr old has a fracture in the growth plate in her hip. She is on crutches right now but I know there is no way she could use them at any of the parks.

Ok questions

I need to rent a wheelchair but I don't think just a park chair is going to work because what the in the world would we do with her crutches while we are in the park?
I know she can't have an ECV so I guess just a regular chair that we will push her in will do, but what size do I get her? And wheelchairs can go on buses right?
Because she can use her crutches in the room or even hobble if needed we probably wouldn't need a HA room but do wheelchairs fit ok on the elevators or should we try to get a ground floor? We are at POP

How does it work with the rides? I get that we can get her a DAS and it works a little like Fastpasses (am I understanding that right?) but is there a place we park her chair that won't require too much walking or standing?

I know no matter what we are going to have a great time and she's been a real trooper through this. Any help would be great!

rent a wheel chair off sit there is a list of vender in one of the pen threads ( and I am sure someone will post the link ) they come in different set sizes

you ay find an off sit vender that will rent an ECV to someone her age I do not know

yes she can use her wheel chair on the buss and if you have one from off sit she can keep it the whole time.

most wheel chair can fold so just fold it in the room and go around it yes it will fit in an elevator the only thing that many be help full with a handicap room is the bathroom is bigger and you will not need to step in the shower

most rids are ECV wheel chair so you go in the regular line and wait just like every one else and she can stay in her wheel chair the whole time the few that have stars ( space is one that has stars right at the front) they will give you a return time on a little card ( the size of a business card) and you will come back at the time and go in the fast pass line rides that have stars farther in like tory story you go throughout the regular line and when you get to the steeps they make you go round them

if the only thing is her leg she will not need a DAS card. the DAS card dose not work like a fast pass you still have to wait your time but can do so not in the line.

You would just take the wheelchair through the regular line, up to the ride. She won't qualify for a DAS since this is a mobility issue.

If you want to have a wheelchair at all time, rent from an offsite vendor. Wheelchairs are fine on the busses and fit into regular rooms.

Sorry your daughter is injured! That sounds painful. I agree that trying to use crutches all day, every day, around the parks is too much. At least some, if not all, of the offsite vendors rent manual wheelchairs in various sizes. You might also ask about adding on a crutch-holder so she won't have to hold those all day while being pushed. I suggest calling them to discuss what size is best for your daughter. There is a list of offsite vendors in the disABILITIES FAQ sticky pinned near the top of this forum.

Wheelchairs can go on buses, at least 2 and some buses have room for 3. You can fold the chair (like a stroller) and sit in a regular seat. You can take the wheelchair on elevators at the resort. Unless she needs a roll-in shower or other accommodations in the room, you probably do not need an accessible room.

PPs are correct that a mobility issue will not qualify for the DAS. You will be able to take the wheelchair through the queues; if she can transfer for boarding that can be done without waiting for an accessible ride vehicle.

Enjoy your vacation!

Great thank you all so much!

I had no idea we could just wait in the line with her wheelchair, I guess I never really paid attention. That is awesome. She will be able to transfer for all rides so that won't be a problem.
I'll see if I can request a HA room but if we can't it won't be that big of a deal, and I would hate to take the room from someone who truly needs it. She can get out of her chair and I can fold it to get into the room.
Does anyone have a favorite rental company for wheelchairs? I've rented strollers before but never wheelchairs.

Thanks everyone for so much help!

She can get out of her chair and I can fold it to get into the room.

The wheelchair will fit through the door of any resort guest room. You can fold it inside so it doesn't take up as much space.

Enjoy your vacation!

From the "been there, done that" file..... I rented a smaller chair from Walker Mobility and was VERY happy with eh chair and the service.

PPers are absolutely correct about buses, lines and not needs a DAS card.

What _I_ found helpful was to ask the CM at the font of each and every line WHAT I needed to do with the wc??? In some cases you go through regular line, while at others they had me in a "side" line. I *could* walk short distances, so I would also ask the second CM in the line if there was a place to park they chair while I went into a show and got a "regular" seat.

WDW really does make this much easier than it sounds!

Walker has 16", 18", 20", 22", and 24" (seat width) wheelchairs. The 16" has a weight limit of 100 pounds, the others much greater.

Randy's might rent an ECV to someone under 18. Their practice has always been to deliver the equipment directly to the customer, so the rep would probably make the actual decision.

Please be sure and take along some cheap bike gloves from Wal-Mart (or similar) - whether your daughter has the strength to propel herself for 6 to 8 miles per day, or you wind up pushing her, you will both be glad to have the bike gloves to help prevent blisters.
