Questions for those who have been on the ABD Germany trip...

My fiancee and I are booked on the ABD Germany trip for September of 2014. We picked the trip that would land us in Munich for Oktoberfest. I have a few questions regarding the hotel in Munich.

Is the Kempinksi Hotel in Munich be close to the festival grounds?

Is the Kempinski Hotel close to the train station?

What type of room do they put a couple in? (Business, superior, deluxe room?) We are going to stay in Munich for 2 or 3 more nights after the tour ends and for convenience we might just stay there, but I dont need a fancy room and want to be closer to the festival.

On Day 7 there is a walking tour of Munich then dinner on your own. At approx what time are you free to do what you like in Munich?

We just returned from this trip in July & can help you a little with some of your questions. ;-)

1.We drove by the Oktoberfest grounds, but am not sure if it is walking distance.
2. Friends stayed an extra day and I think they found the train station easily.
3. The rooms at the Kempinski are beautiful and very expensive. I believe the additional night for our friends was $600. It is GORGEOUS. Actor James Marsden was staying there when we were. Many a Saudi prince, too. ;-)
4. Munich, unfortunately, was the most rushed of the entire tour. We ALL said we wished the tour had one more day there. The walking tour is intense. Lots to see in a limited time. We were in the town square to see the glockenspiel at 5 pm, ran through the area of Pope Benedict's cathedral, saw the outside of the palace and the opera house, and then were free to do what we wanted. We raced to the local shop our guide told us about so DD could purchase her authentic dirndl and got there right before the shop closed. Had dinner at an outdoor cafe and walked through the Hard Rock Cafe and the Hofbrauhaus. Returned to the Kempinski to enjoy some cocktails in the bar and be ready bright and early for breakfast and the trip to Neuschwanstein!

Would have loved another day in Munich to visit some of the churches, museums, shopping. DD was disappointed we didn't have time to visit Dachau, after taking a Holocaust class the previous semester. We would definitely return to Munich if we can someday!

I went on this trip in Sept. 2011. The Kempinski is very far from the festival grounds, but you can take a cab (this is pretty much the only way to get there from the hotel), which many people opted to do. You do have time on your "free evening" to go to Oktoberfest on your own, though we chose to stay for 2 extra days in order to get the most of the festivities (and it was AMAZING... But crowded - get there first thing in the morning when it opens... trust me). We did change hotels though to be closer to the fun (I don't remember where we stayed. It was a chain... Hyatt, Mariott, something like that). Hotels during Oktoberfest are very expensive. We paid $400 a night US for our hotel, but the Kempinski was more than $700 per night to add on. But it was really worth it. Oktoberfest is easily my favorite travel memory thus far.

Cab for sure. We just returned from the late September, Germany ABD and we took a cab to and from the hotel to Oktoberfest. The Metro station is also very close to the grounds and there is a station near the hotel and it is only a few stops away.

And the post nights at the Kempinski Hotel were around $1300 a night due to Oktoberfest. I would suggest a different hotel for post nights. We had a standard room with a rather unspectacular view. But the rooms were straight out of Star Trek!! Just awesome!

I just called ABD last week to see how much it would be to add on the 2 days in Munich....I think it was 2400! wowza!

I went on Booking.com and found something in Munich closer to the festival grounds:

The total is 440 euros for 2 nights. it is about 1 mile from the festival grounds and a few minutes from the train station. I think it should be ok considering we will not be in the room at all. I can also cancel it up to 7 days before in case I find something else or for some reason we cannot stay for 2 more days in Munich.
