Questions and Concerns about Resort smoking policies

From our experiences at many WDW resorts, smoking is permitted on all WDW resort balconies, except AKL - due to the animals. This has included numerous visits to the Poly, over the years. It is also permitted on the outside hallways of the value and moderate resorts (that do not have room balconies) and at all resort pool areas.
As with many things at WDW, the answers you get can vary greatly according to which CM you are speaking to and which answer he/she thinks you want.

Honestly, I think the policy regarding the pool area should be changed. I don't think its fair to smoke in a closely confined area (like in a jacuzzi when others are present) or around an area where there are lots of non-smokers and small children. I think the designated areas at AK are a pretty good idea, why not have this at resorts? Such as a garden area to smoke in if you are outdoors.

Thanks for clarifying the info on the Boardwalk. I was getting concerned that a new CM had booked our room accidentally thinking it was non-smoking, and that's what had caused the problems. Good to hear not all the second floor rooms are smoking since I liked the location.

If you have a bad liver and arthritus on top of diabetes it CAn be an issue. Please don't tell me otherwise. Some people are allergic to the smell of peanuts, the fact that silverware may have touched peanut oil, etc. so you don't necessarily have to ram them down their throat. My point is.....we're all not getting EXACTLY what we want. I may get less rest then my body needs by noise, its the chance I take wanting to vacation at DisneyWorld.

So then people on the next balcony (and above) will have to smell your smoke. Very inconsiderate. :sad2:

I could not aggree more. If smoke comes over to our balcony, then my rights as a non-smoker are being trampled on. If I get a non-smoking room, it should include the balconey as well. Smokers rights end the moment their smoke leaves their mouths and waffles over to my nose and eyes...smjj

If you have stayed at only the resorts listed in your signature then you haven't even had a balcony. Only deluxes have balconies.

What? ASMovies doesn't have balconies? Gee I guess all of that second hand smoke has affected my brain :confused3 I haven't added to my signature the time last year I stayed with my mom at Wilderness Lodge. So Sorry!!!

They do not have private balconies. They have communal walkways. Can you tell me that you have another door besides the one that leads to the outside? Does this second door have a balcony that no one else has access to it besides you? These walkways are a far cry from the private balconies that we are speaking of.

Some resorts have NS and smoking on the same floor especially on concierge level. Also some are smoking optional rooms. They have these at many of the DVC resorts.

Even though the policy at AKL is nonsmoking, they do allow it and will even bring you an ashtray if you want one.

I do not smoke, but I understand the rights of the smokers. My suggestion would be if you book a NS room just use common courtesy. If the room next to yours is NS and someone comes out on the balcony be polite and put it out. Since the room is NS if you smoke on the balcony, keep the door closed while smoking and do not go back in until the smoke has cleared, so it does not follow you back in.

We have gotten NS rooms that have been smoked in. Personally I think as more and more rooms are taken out as Smoking rooms this will happen more and more. And we were guaranteed NS.

I think the situation just calls for some consideration on both parts. :flower:

Smokers pay just as much for their smoking room as you do for your non-smoking room and should not have to take an elevator and walk a mile to have a smoke. So long as they are within Disney guidlines and either in their smoking room or outside (whether it be balcony or not) they should not be harrassed for it.

Including the pool area (apparently within Disney guidelines)? I still think that it is should be an issue to try not to light up when soaking in a jacuzzi with other people or when lots of people are in a pool, even if Disney doesn't enforce this. I have never asked anyone to put out a cigarette, but the smoke basically ruins my experience in the jacuzzi because it is such a sensory one. If someone starts smoking, I have to get out. I think the smoker should walk beyond the pool area when smoking, even when they've paid the same rate as the non-smoker.

So Sorry I guess my sarcasm didn't quite come accross. We made our own balcony by getting the lawn chair out of the truck and sitting it outside of the door with a coffee can for a ashtray. If you would have read the last part we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge last year(had to cash in our cans for that one ;) )The ones in my signature are the ones I took with my son only. Our new tradition. By the way I'm not a smoker... Now I have to go find that refillable mug I bought at a garage sale last month :rotfl2:

I agree.

You know for the most part I agree with what you said. I would NEVER light up while in the pool or jacuzzi with a bunch of people around me. However, as far as a balcony. The only time I would really want to sit on the balcony and smoke is first thing in the morning when I wake up. Or right before I go to sleep at night. It isn't like I would just be out there puffing away yukking it up with everyone. I try to be respectful of non smokers, but I don't think there should be anything wrong with me stepping outside and having a cigarette to wake up while I am still in my pj's, I don't want to have to get dressed and walk all the way outside if I can just step out on the balcony!!

I don't want to "infringe" on anyone elses vacation either. I have HepC, arthritus and diabetes and require alot of sleep. Does that mean that I can request no young children running around above or below me? Oh and don't forget don't let them out on the balconey, your infringing on my health even outside and while we are at it, ....don't drink too much alcohol, I can't have you being loud at night, rest is imperative to my health. I guess what I'm saying is noone is perfect, no vacation is going to be perfect unless we relax a little and stop worrying about so much.... I understand medical issues w/ smoke, that would be easier to get away from than say...the peanut allergies. I think people have a huge right to be concerned about that whereas it may not be something you see to be able to get away from. I'm done though, these smoking issues are getting as boring as the handicapped issues. Light(en) up everyone. (its a joke)

Okay, no offense, but if you have all those ailments (especially diabetes), I would worry about your own smoking and your inability to quit (as evidenced by your comment that it is not an option right now for you and your husband) before possibly blaming a loud kid who may be depriving you of sleep (this coming from someone whose uncle was diagnosed with diabetes, decided he didn't need to quit smoking as the doctor strongly recommended and has had two strokes since).

P.S. This is not a personal attack only an observation from the comments you previously made about yourself.

I totally agree Heather and trust me I have tried. I am the first to admit, I have no willpower (horrible excuse I know) My comment about loud kids was more or less a sarcastic comment (for lack of a better word) about how I wish we could all relax a little bit and take the good w/ the bad. I would NEVER complain about a child loud or otherwise. No offense taken :wave2:

Edited to add: Woohoo I think I learned how to quote...and when we stay at moderates before moving over to DVC I always bring my own coffee can :rotfl: We do ask for smoking building even though we don't smoke in the room .

If you can promise me your smoke won't leave your balcony or stay within an inch of you then OK I will aggree. But your smoke get into my clothes, my lungs and my eyes and to a non-smoker the mere smell is very repulsive. Plus it is my understanding the Mousekeeping has to spend more time and money fumigating rooms that smokers have soiled and ruined for us non-smokers...smjj

This had turned into a debate instead of an answer about resort smoking policies.

The thread is officially closed.
