Questions about transfer rule

I am planning a trip that I need 24 extra points for. A friend is willing to give me points, but I am concerned about the difference in UY.

My UY is February, so I am in 2014.
His UY is October, so he is still in 2013.
The trip is in September 2014.
He does not have any 2013 points, but has 2014 points.

Can he transfer points to me? If so, will I have them available to book my Sept trip?

Oct 14 points can't be transferred until Oct 1, 2014.

DVC allows you to purchase up to 24 points @ $15 per point.

The issue you will run into with his points is you need his October 2013 points for a September 2014 stay. You can bank transferred points but I don't think you can borrow.

Are you sure? I've never transferred points, but from many posts here I thought you could transfer points out of your next use year, just as you can borrow them if needed.

I tried to have points transferred last year. I have an April UY, the transfer was Oct UY. MS turned us down. We were only allowed to transfer 1 time per UY. And only current points can be transferred.

At the time, the current Oct points could be transferred, but the next year's Oct points, we had to wait until the start of UY.

A few weeks later I found someone else on the rent/trade boards with a Dec UY. We were told the same thing by a different MS, can only transfer current UY points.

I guess if you got a really nice MS, maybe they would transfer it?

Much depends on the timing. For example the Oct 2013 points would need to be transferred into the 2013 UY of the receiving contract and yes, only one per UY. The 2014 Oct UY points could be transferred into a 2014 UY. The timing needs to align that the transfer of the 2013 points happened prior to either starting their 2014 UY. And in the case of the 2014 points both would have to already be in their 2013 UY. But you can transfer current point and the next years points.

Sept 2014 would be in your friend's Oct 2013 UY, so you could not use his Oct 2014 points. You would have to borrow them and you cannot borrow transferred points. They retain their UY and resort.

But your friend could make a reservation for you and ask MS to link it to your reservation.

Finaly got through to MS and they confirmed this. Dang! Looks like I will be staying one night at POP and have to hope my waitlist comes through for the other nights. I think having two ressies would confuse things too much.

More confusing than a one night stay at Pop Century? Gotta disagree with you on that one.

If the reservation is for the same resort, villa size and view, the front desk should be able to at least keep you in the same room. Worst case is you have to stop at the front desk to check-in a second time. But they may even be able to link the two reservations and eliminate the second check-in.

I believe your best and easiest option is to simply have him make the one night in his account using borrowed points and then link the reservations.

Agreed! I have done this for the past two years and it has worked out just fine. I booked what I could with my points and had a different friend each year book my remaining nights. Then we linked them together and everything worked out.

Also, for future reference, in the past, I was able to get August 2012 UY points transferred into my account at the beginning of the August 2011 UY. It could happen as early as August 1.

I tried two separate times to transfer points. Both were fall UYs so maybe it's because I was already in UY 2013 while the others were in 2012?

The transferred points were all in their current UY, nothing banked or borrowed. And we were told that only current points can be transferred. Next year's points had to wait until we both hit our next UY. And if it makes a difference, both transfer points were well before their banking deadline.

Using the transferred points were a PITA as well. Half the time MS couldn't see them. It may be because they were points from different years. I'll have to try it out again.

Have you considered one time use points if you didn't want to link the two reservations? It might cost you a smidge more but would eliminate the move!

Most people are reporting that transfers from the same resort are now visible online but I don't know if that is only transfer from the same UY's too or if it can be any UY as long as it's the same resort.

I had the same resort transferred, but different UY. Wasn't able to see them online. MS did say if they were the same UY and resort, I'd be able to see them online.

If I remember correctly, we weren't even given the option to transfer 2013 point to 2013 points. My only option was to take the 2012 points.

Well, I may have gotten lucky but we confirmed the points were there in one call and hung up, I transferred the money and the person called again and got a different CM. I questioned it too but it went through. Now, maybe it had to do with the fact that we transferred during April 2011 but, since my UY is June, I was still in my 2010 UY. The cool thing was they showed up immediately online in my account. Even the CM was surprised.
