I don't understand the technology involved. I have an iphone which I love. I have been considering getting a Kindle or Nook soon. However, I'm wondering about getting this instead. Why would I need a data plan? If I don't get a data plan would I still be able to use it in wifi areas such as my home and a coffee shop? If I don't have a data plan is there any point to the 3g version? If I am purchasing to do in addition to the other features, reading do I need a ton of storage? Can I store my kindle books or other readers on my pc or in the amazon store and only put one or two on at a time that I'm reading? The same thing with movies. I don't use a device to do a bunch of movie watching but if I occasionally go on a long trip and might watch a movie or two can I put them on and then take them off like I would with my laptop. I may only be able to get the 16g version. I don't think I'll be able to rationalize the larger hard drive.
Thanks if you can help.

Yes, you would be able to use the non-3G version in any Wi-Fi hotspot.
No, there's no point to getting the 3G version if you aren't planning on getting the data plan.
16GB would probably be sufficient if you are just doing the book thing, but it really depends on what size the books are from the Apple bookstore.
The iPad will sync with your iTunes, so you can move over music, movies, books that you want on there and take them off when you want.
I'm not sure if you were asking if you could put Kindle books on the iPad or not. I don't think anyone knows for sure if other book sources will be able to be put on the iPad or not. I guess we have to wait and see.

The difference between the two may not seem like a big deal but it can be for some. The kindle uses e-ink and is not back lit. The ipad is LCD. People generally find e-ink much easier on the eyes.

I agree about the e-ink...way easier on the eyes for reading a book.

yep - I agree the e-ink might be easier on the eyes. I have a kindle, so I'm not sure -would love to try reading on the I-pad.

You won't need the data plan unless you have the 3G version. It's like the difference between the Iphone and the Itouch. I touch can use wireless/wi-fi but not 3G. Iphone uses both. You only pay a dataplan for the i-phone.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I am wondering if you are able to have the ipad without purchasing the data plan? My DS wanted a new phone this weekend but any of the higher end phones required a $10/mo. internet access fee. This was a new thing put into place since 1/18/10. While at the store I noticed many of the bigger phones (blackberrys, etc) now requiring a $30/mo. data fee.

I was irritated since he has no need for internet access on his phone but when we checked other carriers (we have verizon) they also were instituting this fee so it seems we would be charged this wherever we went. All part of the push towards "bundling" I guess.

I noticed the ipad doesn't require a contract so maybe this isn't relevant, hope so anyway!

I hate contracts. Thankfully, the iPad is unlocked, meaning I can install a Pay As You Go SIM card :)

its colored LCD so makes it good for books with images. ALso there is an eink option in it. I want this for thanksgiving. now to be really nice to DH

iPad can be used over WiFi without a data plan.

Nobody really knows about the Kindle App, or Barnes and Noble App, or Kobo, or Stanza or any of the other eReader apps. During the press conference it was stated that all Apps currently in the store will run on the iPad

but

Apple has a solid history of denying Apps that compete with their own existing products. So it is unclear if they will allow the Apps to remain, or if they will allow eBooks purchased from vendors other than their own eBook store to be read on the iPad.

Stay tuned for more details I guess.

I'm not sure what you mean by "there is an eInk option." Not that I've seen.

This seems like a huge disappointment. Pretty much a giant *** Ipod Touch. Apple faithful will eat it up though.

What do you mean "there is an eink option in it?"What are you talking about?
