I have a question. I worked in RI and lived in MA. I got my W2's from my job and I am confused. I got eight copies rather than four. The first four have the normal stuff, federal tax, ss and MA state tax. Very little state tax was taken out for MA. The last four don't have fed info or ss just RI state tax which is significantly larger than the MA state tax.

Any idea how this works? I am concerned about having to pay in MA but that wouldn't make sense. There is no way enough paid in MA tax to pay for taxes but......

Thanks!!

The reason you got a second set of W-2's was that it can probably only fit one state tax on each W-2. Some of our employees pay tax in several states so they get several W-2's.

I am not a tax professional, but I believe that you had to have RI taxes withheld since you work there. You should be able to claim those RI taxes as a credit against any taxes you owe in your state of residence, MA. Do you have someone prepare your returns for you? It might be a good idea if you do not know how to file in both states.

Laura is essentially correct. I do the opposite of you... I work in Norwood and live in N Prov.

Your extra W-2's are for Rhody.
What you pay in Rhody can be used as a credit toward taxes in MA. I didn't know about this either until last year, but I got lucky that it worked out (got money back from MA and owed Rhody $10.)
It really stinks. Sorry it hit you like it did, but now you will know, so at least it will only happen this once.

Last year I used turbotax.com early in the year to do a preliminary look at my tax situation. They let you input all your information and it keeps a tally of the taxes owed or to be refunded. You only have to pay the fee when you file, which I ended up doing anyway. If you try that, you can at least get a look at whether you'd owe or not to your state.
