Questions about SW ticketing

I'm planning a trip out west with my daughter and her friend. I will be using SW points to purchase the tickets.

I'm ready to buy the tickets now because the fares are decent, but there is a problem. The friend's mother won't give an answer on her daughter going just yet. If she doesn't go then another friend will go.

So my question, can I buy the tickets and cancel just the friend's ticket? Or would I have to cancel the whole reservation and rebook? Or would I be able to switch names? Should I look the friend on a separate reservation? Making it easier to cancel?

Thanks for any help.

If you buy a "wanna get away" fare, you cannot cancel and get your money back if she doesn't go. You would get a credit for the friend that only she can use. You can't change names. I would just buy your tickets, not the friends.

You can go ahead and purchase the tickets and switch the name later if you have too since you are using points to buy the tickets.

Just keep in mind the cash you have to pay to cover the taxes which should be about $10 will not be refundable. That $10 will remain as a credit to the original name on the ticket so you will have to pay the taxes again if a different girl goes.

If you are using cash to purchase the other girls ticket then no you can not change names on the ticket.

Sorry, I didn't notice that you were going to use points. I would buy the friend's ticket with points and see what happens. I don't think you can change names if someone else goes. You would have to cancel her ticket, get the points back and repurchase for the new person at the current rate.

I'm not sure that you can change the name on the tickets. You are able to change the flight times or dates without cancelling but not the name on a ticket.
If the one friend is not able to go you would have to cancel the ticket in her name. The reward points would then be returned to your account. You would then need to re-book the new persons tickets. There is no penalty but if there is an increase in cost, the point amount will be higher and you may have to use more points.
I would definitely book the friends tickets separately from yours and your daughter, just in case

Since she is booking with her rapid rewards point she "can" change the name. Because she is canceling the ticket and since the OP is the owner of the points, the points will be credited back to the OP acct. - Which is a nice perk for booking with points. I just did this a few days ago and all the points were deposited back to my DH acct when I canceled my flight.

Now if she pays cash for the ticket NO she can not change the name.

Really not changing the name, she would have to cancel and rebook at current rate.

Yeah, but you can't do that with a cash ticket, so it's closer to allowing a name change which is not possible with anything other than a RR ticket.

As noted, you cannot change the name on a ticket. Keep in mind that if you buy a ticket with points and have to cancel the ticket, then rebook in another name, it's possible the new ticket will have a higher price.

Personally, if the first child's parent can't make up her mind, I'd move on to the second child.
