Questions about renting points

I'm very excited about this possibility for a trip in Summer of 2007. :woohoo: (I know I'm planning early) I originally looked into booking through Disney and YIKES!! I figured we would have to stay offsite.
How soon do I need to look into renting from a DVC owner? We have invited DH's sister and her family, but aren't sure if they will make the trip. :confused3 If they do, we will need a 2 bedroom. If not, a studio will suit DH, DS and I fine. We would prefer BCV, BWV or VWL. We can also be flexible with dates. Anytime from the end of May to the first of August. We would prefer the earlier summer dates, but if it doesn't work out that way, it'll be fine. Also, we would probably arrive on Sunday and check out on Friday.
Is there anything else I need to know? Can you add on the dining plan if renting points? I appreciate any info!!

First, you can use the point calculator to figure out how many you would need. The smaller resorts tend to rent for more (especially VWL).
No one can book before 11 months out, so you'd want to optimally find someone with the home resort you want at that time. If they own at another resort, they can't book until 6 months out (but for early summer for a 2 br or studio, that shouldn't be a big issue). Expect to pay at least $10 a point.
You can add the dining plan once the res is made.
Best bet - post your needs on the rent/trade bard, but also look for posts of renters that meet those needs. Email them as soon as you can. It's been my experience that you'll have much more luck emailing a renter than waiting for someone to answer you "points wanted" post.

I suggest you post your request on the rent board 11 mths perior to the dates you are looking for. When you rent at THAT TIME you need to know how large of a room you will need. It is combersome to bounce back and forth on what size room you need. DVC is for long range planners.

Yes you can add the dinning plan if you rent.

You'll need to be aware that it's not like booking a Disney hotel. You can't switch/cancel etc. right up to the last minute. It's difficult to change the room size or days the closer you get to the arrival date. For some dates there just won't be space, although that's unlikely to be a problem in the summer. If the space is available you "can" switch from a 2 bedrrom down to a studio if your relatives change their minds, but you will have tied up the member's points and they may not be able to switch you.

I would go with 2 studios - one for you and one for them. then it will be easier to cancel the other studio. but also remember that many member will not allow you to cancel the last 60 to 30 days because then the points go in holding....

a studio has a queen bed and a double sleeper sofa except OKW which has 2 queen beds - if this makes a difference to you.

Since you are interested in the smaller resorts, you should really plan on offering $11 or $12 in your request in order to get an owner to respond quickly. Owners at the smaller resorts are beginning to catch on that their 11 month window is worth something.

You should know that renting DVC points - even at $10 - will be more expensive than staying at a value resort on property. When people say the savings are incredible - they are darn good over rack rates at a Deluxe, but they don't compare to value resort rates.

good point, a cash stay at a 80 dollar hotel will cost you less then renting pts to stay in a 300 dollar per night deluxe room, 10 min from epcot.

Thanks for the replys! I do realize we will need to have our minds made up before we go into renting points and I will make our family decide by May. :thumbsup2 I also realize that a value resort would be less $$$$. But. . . . I'm a little nervous about the Values due to a friend's recent trip. I also like the idea of having a small kitchen and, if DSIL and her family go, we can have room to spread out and still be together. I know we will need a break during the day, so having a good place to rest is important to us. I know my first choice is BWV, mainly due to the pool  We would consider any DVC resort, though, if we can't get our first choices.

Are you sure you don't mean BCV (the beach club)?

They are the one with the best pool.

I own BWV, by the way..........

bcv pool rocks.

we make it a point to stay there atleast one day every time we are at wdw.

best ever..........
