Questions about Lawyer Fees

My husband & I are currently in the process of divorce. I have a top-notch lawyer and he has chosen to represent himself. I just received this months bill from my lawyer & there are 4 "meetings w/ husband" in which I was billed appx $300!

Am I really responsible for footing the bill everytime he walks in there? Should she be talking to him at all? Or is this because he has chosen to represent himself that she has to meet with him?

Anyone have any experience in this field???????

Since your husband is representing himself, I guess it would be like meeting with the opposing attorney. And, yes, attorneys charge you for every meeting, every phone call, every letter. Your husband may be doing this purposely to drive up your attorney fees. I'd talk to the attorney about notifying you of all meetings in advance and perhaps you could tell her if you don't feel a particular meeting is necessary.

I was very lucky--I knew my attorney personally for several years before my divorce and he handled my case pro bono because he knew I was broke. He's made his money back, though, in subsequent things he's handled for me. However, I also trust him that he doesn't schedule meetings/phone calls needlessly and many times, if he and I are discussing other things besides the case, he doesn't charge me for a particular meeting/phone call.

My husband has his own law practice, and a bill of $300 for 4 meetings is quite reasonable, at least in my opinion.

Many experienced attorneys bill anywhere from $150 to $300 per hour, depending on what the market will bear.

And as NMAmy said, they usually do charge for every meeting, phone call and letter. That's their business and what they "produce" - their time and expertise. Just like someone else sells cars, shirts, or services.
