Questions about getting Lasik Eye Surgey before coming to Disney

My scheduled appointment for Lasik is next week (which is 5 weeks before I come to Disney). I was wondering if anyone else has done this. If you have please give me tips on what rides I can and cant ride or if I have to wear the protective eye goggles on the rides.

Five weeks is plenty of time to heal. You will have to wear the protective lenses when you sleep but during the day you should need to wear anything. But check with your doctor of course!

Thank you so much. :cool1::cool1: I just relized yesterday that we are going 5 weeks after. I do know I have to wear sunglasses for 2 weeks when im outside. I wasn't sure about rides or anything

Unless you have a weird case, you should have no restrictions at 5 weeks. Might still have a little extra light sensitivity and want to wear sunglasses but I pretty much do that on sunny days at Disneyworld no matter what. I was pretty much normal after about 2 weeks.

You will be totally fine. I slept in the goggles for the first night only and had no issues. I did suffer from dry eye for a few months, so you will probably have to carry drops with you. And I am still a bit photo sensitive years later, so make sure you have a good pair of sunglasses. Other than that you will have no issues!

Only other thing is to check with your doc if there are any precautions you need to take while swimming. But even then, if you plan to go underwater, goggles are a good idea. Otherwise, you're good to go!

A friend of mine, who had it done at the same place I did, wasn't even sun-sensitive after the 1st full day. She has had absolutely no problems and would be totally fine in your situation.

For me, however, I had it done in 2002 and I still could buy stock in Genteal considering how often I have to use the drops. I've gone to the gel, actually, because it lasts longer.

I'm now back in glasses, but the truth is the glasses never stopped. Why? Because you HAVE TO wear sunglasses. Forever. For me, I got so sun-sensitive that on a sunny day here in the Pacific NW I sometimes have to wear sunglasses INSIDE. Of course, if we would stop renting places with big huge windows that let all the light in that wouldn't be an issue, but we do so it is.

I also developed a horrible problem going from light to dark and dark to light. When at Disneyland, we ate at Blue Bayou and had waterside tables (that's the restaurant that looks over the POTC ride), and I could barely see the table, it was so dark. If I made the mistake of looking towards the door, which was letting in the so cal sunshine in, I was blind for a minute or two while my eyes readjusted.

Even now, if there's a flash-photographer on a dark ride, it destroys my ride b/c I either have to keep my eyes shut or deal with basically having my eyes shut as my eyes deal with the sudden light.

Taking a break to truly blink to deal with the dryness in my left eye (which also has a HUGE bloodshot vein that has been there since Lasik and there is nothing to be done about it...it irritates my eyelid and never goes away).

I had Lasik done for vanity ("I don't want to walk down the aisle wearing glasses") and have paid heavily for it ever since.

ON the other hand, my sister in law has had nothing but beautiful times with it, and has had two touchups since she had it done in around 2000.

If you go to a place that does free touchups, you'd better wear your sunglasses ALL the time, because if they see any sun damage in your eyes you won't get that touchup for free. (SIL recommends not going to a place that does free touchups, she paid big bucks out of pocket each time, and has had nothing but good results, so she might have something there)

You just never know how your body will react. So bulk up your GOOD sunglasses budget, because eye care insurance doesn't usually cover 'em.

Being an outlier is no fun, but you just never know if it might be you. There aren't many things I regret in life, but Lasik is right near the top of my list. Sure, I was 20/20 for about 8 years, but now I'm not and I still have all the problems. Not quite a win/win situation.

Hope you don't end up like me!

also, are you getting lasik, or a different form of corrective surgery?

i had PRK (wasn't a candidate for lasik), and recovery was rather long (and painful).
i would do it again in a heartbeat tho :)

ditto on the eyedrops (prescription restisis didn't work for me, gel OTC were better), and good sunglasses.
also, be careful of night driving - the "halos" can last a while.

have a great vaca!

Congrats on getting the surgery! I wore glasses for 30 years and then had my surgery just over 6 years ago. (I guess I am letting my age show here) :rotfl2:

Best thing I ever did!!! I will probably need reading glasses at some point in life but not yet so it is grand!

As to your question about travelling to Disney, I don't remember the health/safety precautions but I can tell you that my vision wasn't clear for the first few weeks. It got better day by day and week by week but it was still abit fuzzy at the 6 week mark. Everyone heals at a different rate you might not find that.

I never had much sensitivity to the sun, but I am very very very sensitive to smoke of any kind. Campfires, hamburger burning on the grill, walking through the smoking area on the way into work. Any of those can cause real eye pain for me now and it never used to be a problem. :confused3

Good luck with the surgery

Hi! I am a LASIK veteran (12 years ago) and it changed my life! I went from legally blind to 20/20. You will not have any restrictions at 5 weeks post op. I had to sleep in goggles (sexy!) for 2 weeks. Lasik did make me more photosensitive, as expected. I always wear sunglasses now at home or WDW.

I am 47 years young and don't even use reading glasses!

Count me as another lasik fan. Had mine done 5 years ago. Best thing ever. Just make sure you have a good pair of sunglasse and bring your eyedrops. Some of the shows really dry my eyes for some reason.

Wow I'm really surprised at those saying they had to wear goggles for two weeks! I had lasik 6 years ago and I only wore the goggles for one night. It took about 3 days for all blurriness to go away but honestly that wasn't even that bad. I had no light sensitivity and no dry eye issues at all. A week after surgery it seemed totally healed. It was one of the best things I've ever done. At 5 weeks out you should be absolutely fine.

DH had it done and aside from making sure you have eye drops with you at all times and sunglasses, I cannot think of a single thing to worry about. Maybe opening your eyes underwater but I can't do that anyways. DH had to go back like 2 weeks after and never had to see the doctor again so by 5 weeks you should be great!

DH went to Afghanistan 2 months after having his surgery. He was a little more light sensitive and need his sunglasses outside. He also needed eyedrops for dry eyes. But other than that he did fine.

The goggles are to prevent you from rubbing your eyes while you are asleep and the two weeks is to make sure they fully heal. Do you really have to wear them for two weeks? No, but you are increasing the possibility of doing some damage to your eyes by not doing it. I used the drops for about two weeks, but more to aid healing than anything else.

As others have said 5 weeks is plenty of time to recover, and for most people there wouldn't be a problem going to Disney two or three days after having Lasik. I could drive the next day and I think if it is ok to drive it is ok to go to Disney. ;)

I had it done when I was 50, and had mono-vision done (one eye under-corrected for reading), and 13 years later I haven't had a single moment of regret. Yeah I don't have 20/20 distance vision but I also don't have to wear glasses for anything. I do occasionally wear sunglasses but I don't HAVE to wear them. Some people do have problems after the procedure but the percentage is pretty low.

What kind of gel did you find works the best?? I have had cataract surgery in both eyes and the Restasis doesn't do anything for me either!
I still have halos at night...and my last surgery was almost a year ago. Might need some tweaking though...we'll see when I return for my eye checkup this summer.
I also find that sunglasses are my friend. I do need reading glasses so had them made up using Transitions lenses. But they don't get nearly dark enough for me...so I wear regular sunglasses, but will have to find the sunglasses with readers in them..otherwise I'll have to have two pair of glasses on hand all summer!!! I went from almost legally blind to 20/15 in both eyes!! It is really incredible after wearing glasses since I was 11!! Cataracts at 62 was a bit of a surprise, but it's all worked out for me.

The only retriction I had was to not swim underwater for 6 weeks after. Have fun!!

Hearing about the smoke park is bad because I work in a pool hall. Its smokey in there.

The smoke sensitivity was a surprise to me but it really is significant. My sister had the same surgery as me a couple years later and ended up with the same issues smoke. Maybe it's a family thing?
