We will have to rent a scooter for the first time this month for my husband. 9-11 first responder recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer He feels okay but has no stamina whatsoever. We have a lot planned for a Star Wars weekend.

I'm looking and most say 4-5 hours on the battery. That's actual running time right? If we fully charge it, and he's not driving it for 4 straight hours can we make it through a 12-14 hour day at the parks? Are there places to plug them in at the park?

My husband weighs about 230lbs so I need one that will hold him, but I need one that easily comes apart to fit in our rental car. We have a son with autism who doesn't like the buses. It needs to be easy to put together and take apart. I have rheumatoid arthritis and lifting anything too heavy isn't easy for me. Yes, my family is a walking disaster, but we get by somehow

Any suggestions on a model to try to rent that can hold him but isn't to heavy or hard to take apart and put together?

thanks!

There are several I rented victory 9 scooters last year from Apple it will last all day we fit two of them in a Chevy impala trunk they don't list the victory 9 on the web site you have to ask

If we fully charge it, and he's not driving it for 4 straight hours can we make it through a 12-14 hour day at the parks? Yes. You can tell the battery is getting weak when the scooter gets real sluggish. Most scooters also have a charge indicator that will tell you how much of a charge you have. Are there places to plug them in at the park? Yes. We've plugged into an outlet at restaurants and recharged as we ate. Just ask the host or waiter.

Good luck!

I hired a Victory 10 equivalent this year - 3-wheeled version. It will take 245lbs with ease (maximum 275lbs I think). We were out all day and the battery never even went down one bar - and I didn't top-up charge at all. I just turned it off if I was going to be stationary for a bit, and it did seem to do the trick.

This model breaks down into 5 pieces: seat, battery cover, 2 individual batteries, and then you clip the motor off the platform. DD and I managed it in our hired Chevy Captiva - and I even managed to do it myself on my own a couple of times. Most of the time, though, it was a case of bracing ourselves either end of the platform/tiller and going "One - two - three - lift!", and that worked perfectly.

Thanks. Now I just have to pick a company and call. We have no luck or bad luck so I know this is going to be some sort of a disaster :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I so badly wanted to skip this trip but it's the equivalent of hubby's make a wish trip, so I'll feel really bad if I don't take him to a Star Wars weekend and something happens to him.

I hear ya! Dad needed a "carrot" a few months back when he was finishing up his latest round of chemo (also lung cancer, stage 3) so we are hoping he has stamina enough to do WDW. He is really looking forward to it.

So sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis - hope that his doctors are as awesome as our Dad's have been.

Hi,
I am new to Disboards as of today. My husband and I are taking our 12 and 10 year old grandchildren to Disney World for the first time.

A week ago, my husband had a bad leg injury while at the Ocean surf. He will need to rent a scooter to get around while at the Disney Parks. I understand that it is cheaper to rent from a non Disney company that can deliver it to our Wyndam Bonnet Creek Condo. Does anyone have any specific company that they can recommend? I hope I'm not too late in trying to accomplish this.

With much appreciation,
Kar

The Pride Victory scooter is a good choice. The scooter can be awkward to get in and out of a car trunk. The base is the the tough part. Obviously, there is lifting involved. The batteries are heavy, but there are handles. There are two batteries to this scooter and that's why it's a pretty safe bet to say it can last all day. They weigh over 30 pounds each.

To be on the safe side you may want to go to a local mobility company that carries Pride scooters. You can see how it's taken apart; they will demo it. Also, you can try and see how well you do with getting it in and out of the car. They will let you do it.

So sorry your husband is injured just before your vacation. If you haven't already, please check out the disABILITIES FAQ sticky near the top of this forum. That includes listings of off-site vendors along with reviews from posters here on the DIS. Since you are staying off-site, featured vs. non-featured vendors doesn't really matter, and there are good reviews for both.

Enjoy your vacation!

I own a Pride Victory 3 wheel scooter and love it. You can rent form many places. I have gotten a Victory from Apple Scooters in the past. It was cheaper than WDW and was delivered to my hotel.

I'm sorry to hear of your husbands diagnosis. I too have Stage 4 Lung Cancer and am planning a trip to WDW this year. I will also be renting a scooter for the first time.

I can't write much now (I just had chemo today) but I wanted to wish you and your family the best on your trip. Last year in June they gave me 6-8 months to live. In October I went on a long road trip from CA to ND, I wanted to do this trip because I didn't know I would ever get a chance to do it again. I have dear friends in ND and so wanted to see them. Many of my friends said it couldn't be done (I was driving by myself with my three German Shepherd Dogs). I did it. It took me about 10 days to get there and 10 days back but I did it. I've got to say this was one of my best decisions ever. I did not want to spend my last days wishing if only I had done this or that. So I understand your husbands desire to do this. He may have many more years (I hope he does) but why take those chances?

Oddly enough, I'm planning to return to ND in August/September again this year and now WDW in November. Who knows if I'll make both but I'm thinking I will. The best thing I find about traveling is its almost like I'm not a cancer patient for that time. It feels wonderful. Theres no chemo (something I have to have every three weeks), no one is taking my blood (something done every three weeks out of four), I actually feel like a normal person for that short time. I should say when I went to ND and with this trip I will be able to delay chemo for one week, so that gives me an entire month to be like everyone else. Oh the freedom!!!!

I wish you both the best. I wrote more than I expected but that's ok. I'll do to sleep now. I do have a thread out there about staying safe on my trip re: germs. You can find it by searching my posts. I got some good feedback on that.
