So... I've been intending all along to fly into London a few days ahead of my Scotland ABD, then take the train from London to Edinburgh, then fly back from Edinburgh. You can't buy train tickets until around 3 months ahead of time, so I've been waiting to book my train ticket. I got the notification I signed up for from East Coast trains, so went to book my train. Upshot is, I couldn't. So I tried another website, and while it was going to let me book a ticket, there was a warning that they didn't know how this travel was going to affected by construction on the line during the time includes my trip to Edinburgh. So, unless I want to wait until the last minute to see if I can *maybe* take the train or not, it looks like I need to fly to Edinburgh (8.5 hours on the bus is just *not* an option!)

So I'm checking out EasyJet. It's going to take me a bit to get to Stansted Airport (the best flight times from EasyJet's options). And it's probably going to end up costing about the same as the train if I buy a lot of the options to get what I want/need.

So, anyways, does anyone have experience with EasyJet? Can you bring a carryon *and* a personal item, or just a carryon? (The website is confusing!) Any pros, cons?

I appreciate any info or opinions folks have!

EasyJet is one of our 'cheap and cheerful' airlines - as long as you don't expect the world, they're usually great!
One thing to note, although you're probably already aware, is that your hold luggage won't be included unless you add it on. As far as hand luggage goes, you're usually allowed 1 item and a jacket, so make sure your purse/camera/laptop fits in your carry-on bag just in case. Anything you buy in the airport past security (in duty free etc) is usually excluded from this allowance.
On board, everything costs extra as EasyJet are no frills, so you might want to buy something to eat before hand. Leg room isn't terrible, but not as good as a transatlantic flight as you would expect.
To be honest, if you don't mind the trek to Stansted and are aware of the 'cheap and cheerful' way that EasyJet operate, I would go for it :) if you're looking to start your vacation in a more relaxed manner, then Virgin Trains would be my choice :)

Thanks! Yes, I'm aware of the "cheap" part. The "cheerful" is good to know. Thanks for the great info!

Also, I've just noticed you've specified East Coast trains - Cross Country and Virgin are FAR nicer train companies, particularly Virgin. You can usually book 13 weeks in advance :thumbsup2
Oh! Someone suggested East Coast trains, and I wasn't aware of these other 2 companies! THANK YOU! I will definitely check them out!

OK, so I have another question. When I look at the different sites, the times on the trains are all the same. Do the different companies have different *cars* on the same train? (ie, the same engine pulls all sorts of different companies' cars?)

Thanks!

ETA: OK, it looks like I need to leave from London Euston to get Virgin's station & trains? London Euston is actually closer to where I'm staying than Kings Cross, so that's all good! THANK YOU!!!

Have you considered taking Virgin Atlantic's Little Red service from LHR to EDI? I think the fare may be a bit higher than Easy Jet, but you won't be nickle and dimed for everything...

You're welcome! Virgin Atlantic has a sale right now to EDI, but you have to depart from certain cities like Chicago, Boston or New York City.
Thanks! I already have my plane tickets from the US. Virgin Atlantic wouldn't connect from Columbus, so I'd've had to buy 2 tickets to get there via them. Flying United. Probably not as nice, but it gets me there (and back!) :)

You can book trains from any company on any of their websites, just to confuse you! It's well worth looking at the details of each journey time to find out which company is running the service - it will just be one company, usually :)
Yep, Virgin only run out of Euston as far as I am aware. Euston is pretty easy to navigate too, so that will hopefully work out well for you :thumbsup2

Thanks, again! :thumbsup2 I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be doing the Virgin train thing (maybe splurge on First Class!) out of Euston. They're a bit more expensive, but that really seems like the best (and most relaxing) option!
