I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this on, but I have some questions about DVC. We're already booked to stay at the POR April 7-14, 2007. But I'm wondering if it would save us some money to stay at DVC. So here we go.......

1. If we wanted to rent some points, what kind of room would we need to get? There's 4 adults and 3 kids (1 under 1yr.).

2. How would we go about renting points?

3. If you stay at DVC, can you still do the DDP?

4. How would we do our park tickets? Do we buy them separately?

That's all I can think of right now. TIA for any help!

1. You would need at least a 2 bedroom, which would be between 316-350 points, depending on the resort. Points rent for 10$ per point. This would be for your accomodations only.

2. Rental transactions are between a DVC owner and the renter. Keep in mind that, due to banking/borrowing/use year/booking issues, it is very hard to change a reservation and you can probably not cancel your reservation if illness or emergencies arise. Start on the rent/trade board. Renting is based on mutual trust between the parties.

3. You can add the DDP to your reservation and pay for it when you check in. You have to get DDP for the full length of your stay and for all members of your party.

For a 7 day stay your cost to get the DDP per person would be:
Children 10 and older/Adults - 272.93
Children 9 and under - 76.93

4. You have to purchase tickets. There is no discount for renters, extended family members or guests on park tickets.

It depends a bit on what comparison you look at. Are you currently booked into two rooms at POR? How do the kids break down in terms of connection to the adults? Will the kids sleep on pull-outs?

I would probably recommend a two bedroom unit. You'll get one bedroom with a king bed, a second bedroom with either two beds (queen or double depending on the resort) or one bed and one pull-out, plus a living room (with a pull-out) and a full kitchen. There is generally a pack-n-play in one of the closets for the 1yo. If you want to improve your chances of two beds (no pull-out) in the bedroom, you would want to try for a unit at OKW or ask for a dedicated 2BDR.

Take a look at the Rent/Trade board: http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29

Make sure you read the sticky posts about rules and guidelines and that you understand the trust involved in the transaction. I have rented points as both a rentor and a rentee and have been happy with my transactions. However, you have to be okay with the situation as well.

Yes. Ask the owner that you are renting from to add the DDP to the reservation. You will be expected to pay for it (cash or credit) at check-in.

Yes. You can purchase your tickets a number of different ways but they would not be "included in a package".

Hope this helps. :)

disneymotherof3...please be aware that the rental cost per point is completely up to the owner of the points. You may well find someone to rent to you at $10 per point, or even lower. Many will ask for $12-$15 per point. These are owned by individuals and there is no set price.

Keep in mind also that Disney has nothing to do with the agreement between you and the owner. So exercise good caution...and don't assume because it's for a Disney destination that Disney will step in to resolve any issues.

Good luck to you...renting points can be a very good deal but it's important to understand what you're getting into.

I think you'll find the DVC POINT RENTAL PRIMER thread very interesting and helpful.

Since you are looking at Easter week, there may be limited occupancy at DVC resorts for that time. Members usually book up holidays and school breaks up to 11 months ahead of time.

The only double sized beds would be sleeper sofas in the second bedroom. Only OKW has two queen beds in the second bedroom and only lock offs (meaning they can be converted to a studio and a one bedroom) would have a queen sized bed and a double sleeper sofa in the second bedroom.

Ok, I stayed at OKW in 2005 and will be there or probably SSR in 2007.
The DVC is definately something I am considering.

Can current members of DVC tell me the Pros and Cons as you see it and what level (points) you would recommend buying in at? I have a family of 6 includes 4 daughters from ages 8 to 16.

The 2 Bedroom Villa at OKW was perfect for our situation.

Going every other year would be an option to save points, but going to different locations every year would also be an option I am interested in.
So a Minimum I would need enough to stay at OKW 2BR every other year, Max would probably be the same every year. I'm probably leaning towards the every year level and just try different resorts. Typically we take 1 "Family Vacation" per year for probably 7 days. More points would be better than less, but then again if they are easily traded or bought/sold, that is another option. I have no idea how this works.

I don't want to be in a situation where I have too many points or worse, not enough points.

I saw some of the DVC center booths I think there was one in MGM not far from tower of terror, but I didn't want to get hit with a hard sales pitch, so I just avoided it. A hard sales pitch is going to turn me off.

Benefits, pluses, minuses, and let me decide what is right for my situation will work much better.

How would I go about finding out if there is availability for the time frame that we're looking at?

Thanks to everyone for their responses! I'm starting to understand a little bit of this whole DVC thing, but I know there is a lot more to learn.

The only way to find out if there is anything available is you would have to give someone who owns DVC ,amount of people and dates going. So someone who is willing to call MS and ask them about availability. The earliest someone could call is Monday AM

So....would I post it on the rent/trade board? If so, what should I say? Should I just say....

RESERVATIONS WANTED: April 7-14, 2007...flexible on resort

We prefer VWL, but are flexible. We will have 4 adults, 3 kids (13, 2, and 11 months).

Should I say anything about us trying to find out information about what it would cost us? I don't want to be deceptive.

TIA!!!

My understanding is that SSR also has some units that are dedicated 2BDR units with two beds instead of a bed and a pull-out. I am not sure if it is possible to guarantee getting one of these units though.

That post will get you started. There's a link at the top of this page that says: DVC Point Charts. You can look up the different resorts and different dates to find out how many points you would need for a 2 bedroom unit. OKW takes less points than VWL, for example. Stays Sun-Thurs. nights cost the about the same as Fri/Sat. If you start with a ballpark figure of $10. per point you can get an idea of what a rental might cost you. But keep in mind that dates during spring break might be very limited. HTH

I just looked up VWL for your dates....the points are 50 per night during the week or 462 for the entire week (this is a premier week). So ballpark figure would be $4620 or $2500. if you only stay Sun-Thurs nights (check out on Friday). As others have posted these are a rough estimate only.

Rack rate for that time for a 2 BR is still almost $7500 including tax.

You are correct. I stayed in one for Thanksgiving. One another thread they had the break down of how many were dedicated(2 beds) at SSR. I think about 200.

Yep, you are correct on that. I forgot about some of the dedicated two bedrooms.
