Questions about charging to your room key?

Could someone explain to me how this works? Is there a limit to how much you can charge to your room? Once you reach that limit can you tell the front desk to settle the balance to the credit card you gave at check in and free up your room key limit? Can you do this via phone or do you have to visit the front desk to do this?

Thanks in advance.

the limit when you stay at a value resort is $500 moderate $1000 deluxe $1500. if you reach that max during your stay, yes, you can have them charge it to your CC or pay cash or whatever method you want then the limit resets itself. I think you have to go in person to the front desk, but not positive about that.

when we stayed at caribbean beach in nov '05, i called the front desk each morning to charge the balance on the room to my CC. i didn't have to go down there.

The limit is daily however. So unless you plan to charge over that amount per day, you don't have anything to worry about.

Those upper limits mentioned earlier (by level of resort) are correct. Keep in mind that they are UPPER limits ... you can request a lower limit.

These are NOT daily limits. A daily limit of $500, for example, would mean that if I room charge $400 today then I will have $500 of room charge automatically available tomorrow, and that is NOT correct. Well, if you settle the account each night likeFmrCastMembr did, then it would function as a daily limit. But under normal circumstances it is NOT a daily limit. If I am at a Value resort and check-in today and set up a $500 room charge limit, and if I room charge $400 today, then when I go to the parks the next day I have only $100 available credit on my room charge ... it is NOT automatically reset each day.

Do they charge your CC at the end of every day or does it just rollover?
It just keeps rolling until you meet/exceed your pre-set room charge limit. If you never reach your limit, your credit card (if you used one) will be charged ONLY ONCE, which will occur early in the morning of your check-out day. And by the way, you can continue to use room charge during your entire check-out day, even after you've checked out!

Kind of, but there's one important detail that people need to understand. Let's say you are backing up the room charge with a credit card. If you reach your limit, your credit card will be charged, automatically. You won't have the opportunity to decide to pay cash instead. Of course, if you are physically at your resort and you know you are nearing your limit and you don't want your credit card charged, you can go pay cash and reset the account back to zero.

Let's say you are at a park and you've reached your pre-set room charge limit. Yes, you can just call your resort and verbally authorize another room charge account immediately.

Room charge can be backed up by credit card, debit card with VISA/MC logo, cash, travelers checks, and even Disney Dollars.

If you use plastic, there is NO HOLD placed on your credit/bank account, and your account is NOT pre-charged.

Yeah, but there's another important detail o remember:

If you want to be able to charge on your room key, but don't want to leave a credit card imprint, you can put cash, travellers checks, Disney Dollars, or Disney Gift Cards down as a deposit to enable room charging, without a credit card. I have done this many times. I do it every time I stay on-site.

Many CMs don't know that it's possible, so when you ask for it you might get a blank stare. The CM might even tell you that it can't be done, that you can only enable room charging with a credit card. But it CAN be done with cash; just ask for a manager, because they all seem to know how to do it.

If there is any balance left when you check out, it will be refunded to you in cash (US dollars). Of course, this means that you will have to go to the front desk to check out, and cannot use express check out, but that's a minor inconvenience. I likle to go to the front desk to check out anyway, because I like to get a detailed print out of my charges.

Can you request a higher limit? We will be a group of 11 all on my account. I think we are going to go with ASMu suites, but $500 would be very difficult for us to manage given that a TS dinner alone is going to run nearly $300. Do we have any options here aside from calling the front desk continuously? I full expect this trip to run in the 5-10k range.

Yes, I know ... I wrote about it in the very same post:

When we went in December, the limit at our POP resort was $500... we had to charge to the CC on day #3 after we went to BBB! :rotfl: From that day forward, I just kept calling to the front desk and asked them to keep charging over to the CC. It really wasn't a problem for us at all.

Room charge goes by ROOM, not by person. Assuming you're not cramming all 11 of you in one room, you should be OK. It doesn't matter if another room is being paid for by you; that room will still have a separate room charge account from the room you are sleeping in.

I'd assume you'll have at least 2 rooms (suites), so your group will be able to have at least 2 room charge accounts at a time, each with a $500 limit.

I've never read of anyone being able to negotiate a higher room charge limit with resort management, but that doesn't mean it's never ever been done. Good question!

Yes, two suites, I should have made that clear. Given then, 2 $500 limits, I guess we should make sure who charges the meals. In most cases, I would imagine DH signing the dinner charge so that we can determine gratuities. On the other hand, if we are all eating together, I guess we will have auto gratuities anyway.

. . . Can you request a higher limit? We will be a group of 11 all on my account . . .

1) There is an easier way.
2) Let every person apply their room key charges to their own credit card.
3) In this manner, EACH PERSON (not each room) has a $500 limit for Value Resorts.
4) Plus, there is no sorting-out charges to collect from people.
5) Their charges go only to their own credit card.

Example: Dad, Mom, Daughter, Son can have each of their room keys charging to a different credit card, whether they are in the same room or a different room.

Good plan to know! Thanks ;)

I didn't think you could apply more than credit card to one room, has something changed?

1) This has always been possible to all guests at all resorts.
2) It just isn't advertised, and usually discouraged.
3) Just ask for "SHARE" (a very specific term to to used) when you check-in.
4) If your CM doesn't know about it
. . . ask them to look it up in the "Front Desk Procedure Manual"
. . . ask them to call a manager
5) If you want it, DO NOT take no for an answer.

That would be a good plan if we were indeed sharing. Unfortunately, all expenses will be paid by hubby and I. :scared1: I guess we could each use two of our cards per room, thus doubling the limit, yes??

We were there in December. We always charge to our room. If you are staying in a Deluxe resort and you reach the limit on day 3 of a 7 day trip, your credit card will be charged for the amount and you begin again. The limit set is not per day. However, if you spend $1500 a day to your room, then, you will have your credit/debit card charged at the end of each day that you spend $1500. You are only allowed to have a "running tab" up to the approved amount, whether it takes 1 day or 7 days. It just allows Disney to collect their money. Then, you get to start all over again. You will be fine as long as you have the amount on your credit card or in your checking account to cover the debit!
This happened to us...we reached the limit on day 3, the front desk charged our debit card, then we began again the next day with a new $1500 limit.
To be safe, always call the front desk and check your receipts!!!

1) Yes.
2) When we go with 19 extended family members, grandpa pays.
3) I am grandpa.
4) So, I use different cards for several different people.

For your large group at a meal, just use your regular credit card to not worry about going over your limit.
