My ds who is 6 is profoundly deaf in one ear and has a mild to moderate hearing loss in the other. He has one hearing aid with the worse hearing. Would he benefit from the ALDs - Are these similar to the headphones at movie theatre? Would he wear it with the hearing aid or without?
Thanks so much for the any help!

A bit similar, only somewhat more bulky. Probably wear it without the hearing aid, depending on the size and stlye of his.

If the child signs, then you could look into when and where the interpreters will be.

I was also born with a profound hearing loss in one ear and moderate to profound in the other. I stopped wearing a HA in my worse ear at age seven. I am completely oral and do not sign. (My mother said I was an expert lip reader by the age of 3 and would get extremely upset when a speech therapist would cover her lips.)

I suddenly lost the rest of my residual hearing and received a cochlear implant in September 2004, which has really been miraculous for me.

Aside from that....

Does your child use an FM system at school? I had one (since 1982 - when they first came out - my parents jumped on it and bought me one) and if I could tap into the FM system at places outside of school, I did so.

I've heard that you can tap into the FM system at WDW. You may want to look into this as I am not familiar with this because I no longer use an FM system. Or, you could obtain a handheld captioning device. There's also the reflective captioning.

There's also some debate that deaf/hearing-impaired persons don't need a GAC. I disagree. I get a GAC as "insurance," plus it saves me the hassle of having to explain why I need certain services. The GAC just states my needs, and leaves it at that. It's not that I don't like explaining my situation, I don't mind it at all really. But there are just times when I'd just as soon not take the time to explain why I need such and such every. single. time.

Feel free to PM me if you have anymore questions.

He is in a sound amplified classroom and does not have his own fm transmitter. Maybe something for me to look into at a later date. He is still losing hearing in his good ear so not sure where it will end. His is due to a tumor that came out that ear and radiation to that area. He also does not sign but I have taught him the word stop so in a crowded room he knows when he needs to stop doing something. He always prefers not to wear the ha but we're trying. The captioning aides are they for readers. He reads but we are still on slower than faster. He would be concentrating so hard on reading that he will miss the big picture.
