They are part of southwest but still operating as own airline at this time. PLanes are nice, Free Wifi on all flights. Charge for checked bags. They are famous for changing flight times. Limited flights from some airports, I'd say limited nonstop flights. You can pay in advance for assigned seat but pray you actually get to keep it. If you choose to take a chance you can select a seat at 24 hrs check in free, you can pay for checked bags at this time also.

We traveled a few weeks back on AirTran out of Harrisburg, really wanted Allentown but the return flights were sold out.
Great nonstop flights, the sucky late evening flight out $89 and choice of flight back 8:40 AM $89. The flight was so fast, before you knew it were there w/ free internet. I paid online for seating $6, and the bags $20 for two.

The one thing is less flights, limited times available, the better times cost more. Our AirTran will be a Frontier nonstop after Aug.

I read Airtran was rated highest for being on time, not losing luggage and customer service....but they have a small window of flights compared to the thousands by major carriers each day.

Would fly again if things panned out for June.

The only thing I don't like about AirTran is that their seats are uncomfortable oh and that they charge for checking bags. We fly out of Baltimore and have never had a flight time change. I think that if your airport is a major hub for AirTran you won't have flight time changes.

No problems with Airtran. They never changed our flights, prices were fair, and a good experience overall.

I looked on Air Tran's website and it says that you have t purchase wifi through Gogo. I am flying Air Tran in two weeks. If you got free wifi, I would be curious to know how you were able to do that,.

Now you can stay connected to the web, email, online shopping and social networking on every AirTran Airways flight through our partnership with Gogo®.

How can I use inflight internet?
Registering for Gogo is fast and easy. Once you create an account you can easily purchase a session on your next Gogo-equipped flight.

maybe I am wrong but I thought I read about wifi being free, I've never flown AT just booked for friend.

I love Air Tran, and am sad to see them go. We flew them just last month, and had no issues at all. In fact, they made announcements both ways about boarding and leaving early.:thumbsup2 As both flights were full they were also offering to check your carry-on bag for free. So it is a good idea to take an extra yellow Magical Express tag with you, if you may want to take them up on it.

Where are they "going"?? I was thinking of having my son fly them in October.

I flew AirTran last month for the first (and probably last) time. They're leaving our airport in a few months as Southwest does not operate out of "regional" carriers like our airport.

I had to connect in Atlanta on the way down, but had a direct flight coming back (they don't fly direct every day). Both of my "going down" flights had the times changed...my first flight was moved up 1/2 hr and my 2nd flight was moved back 1/2 hr, so I had a lovely time getting acquainted with the Atlanta airport :)

However, all of my flights were either early or on time, the airplane was comfortable, and they served free Coca-Cola products and snacks.

You do have to pay for checked luggage.

I don't have any complaints with them...everything was as expected. Nothing more, nothing less.

Southwest bought them and AirTran will eventually be phased out. Southwest has already took over some of their Atlanta routes. Your son should not have a problem in October, the process is going to take a couple of years.

This is my first time flying in a while and my first time with Airtran.

So what are the rules with bags and carryons? Doesn't each person get a personal item AND a carryon? What would be a personal item? Like a purse/back/pack?

I am traveling with my two young kids and trying to figure out if we can get away with only checking one bag. I thought a backpack for each of them plus a carryon but maybe I am wrong. Thanks in advance.

We've flown AirTran many times and, for the most part, it's been great. The only thing I didn't like was the one year I had a layover in ATL, it seemed to take forever to get out of there.

AirTran allows a carry on and a personal item (purse, laptop, etc...) I think a backpack would be considered a carry on, but I'd check with the airline to be sure.

We are booked on Airtran. It had a great price and we got nonstops beside.

The rule we have been told was: one carryon for the overhead bin and one personal item that fits under the seat in front of them.

When we flew a few months ago with them we had two carry on suitcases and each of us (4) had either a backpack or camera case.

To the OP: we have flown AT several times and never had a problem. Flight time changes, if the happened at all, were minimial, 10 minutes maybe? I always pay for seats wo we can sit together and never had any problems.

I've never flown Air Tran, but I finally bought my tickets a few days ago after checking and checking for days until they released my dates.

I think they are reasonable. I leave Buffalo Nov 5 at 7:55 AM and arrive at 10:33. I leave Orlando Nov 12 at 5:49 PM and arrive at 8:22. Both flights are of course non stop. For two adults it came to $583.20 which included seat selection. I'm going to try and get away with not checking a bag but my mom is thinking of checking one.

I found them cheaper than JetBlue and Southwest. We'll see how it goes!

I was nervous flying them at first too. The only downside were their seats were less comfortable and felt more crowded than SW or JB.

For the carry-ons; we always followed the one under your seat and one in the overhead compartment. Be prepared, there are many people trying to save money by only bringing carryons. If you are one of the last to board, you may have to gate check your carryon if the overhead compartments are full.

If the price of the flight goes down; you can get a travel credit. That credit can be used to pay the baggage fee. That is what we did. Also, they are very strict with the size of the checked baggage. They actually measured ours to see if it was oversized. I had never seen SW or JB do that.

That's odd, because AirTran's seats are a full inch wider than WN's (18 inches on AirTran vs. 17 inches on WN)! However, the seat pitch on WN is 32-33 inches vs. 30-31 inches, so they have a tiny bit more leg room.

We always bring a backback or small bag that can fit under the seat. We also bring 2 roll-a-boards that will go in the bin above. EVERY Airtran flight I have been on, they offer to gate check your carry on for FREE! Save a bit on baggage fees. I go into it hoping that will happen with the bag ready to join the bigger bags below.

One suggestion is to put the DME tags on your carry on if you plan to check it. Those checked bags go under the plane just like regular luggage and will be sent to WDW through the luggage service. If you chose not to put on the tags, you will have to go to baggage claim.

WHat's WN? It was the leg room, not width I was referring to. I usually sit in a row with my 2 children so have plenty of room width wise.
