It has been 13 years since I have flown and EVERYTHING has changed! When we get to the airport, is the 1st thing we do is check in our baggage? In that baggage, do I put the baggie with our toiletries in that or our carry on? Also is there a size limit on medicine, toothpaste, etc? My toothpaste is 4 oz, and we have some over the counter meds that are in a 12 oz container (fiber gummies) for our always constipated kids:)

When it 's time to scan our carry on's do they open it? We have some things we want to keep a surprise until we get on the plane for the kids.

thanks in advance!

I also meant to ask about liquid meds like benadryl, cough medicine--the bottles are 4 oz mostly, but one is bigger. Do I put those in my checked baggage?

Each person is allowed 1 quart size ziplock baggie that they can carry on to the plane with them. All liquids have to be placed in that bag and cannot be more than 3.4oz each. Anything larger has to be put in checked baggage.

Over the counter meds are exempt from that 3.4 rule, but you have to claim them separately as you go thru security.

When you get to the airport, go to the check in counter and check any luggage you may have. You then proceed to the security check point where you have your boarding pass and ID checked. You then put any carry ons on the xray belt. You must remove your shoes and belt and put them in a bin. Your quart baggie must also be taken out of the carry on and put in a bin, I put mine in with my shoes and belt. Any laptops must also be removed from carry on and placed in their own bin. You will go through the metal detector or full body scan and pick your stuff up on the other side. From there, it is normal procedure....

For more info, go to http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#0

The only time I have seen them open a carry on to inspect it, is if something on the x-ray is amiss and catches their attention. Then they will pull it aside and inspect it further. I would recommend if you are unsure about anything check the TSA's website. Nothing worse then getting to the airport and running into problems at security!! Enjoy your vacation!!

Just remember this is for CARRY ONS ONLY. There is no limit to liquids in checked baggage, just make sure they are securly sealed (I use 2 ziplocks) so you don't end up with a mess.

1. Yes, the first thing you do is check your luggage (not carry-ons). This happens before you go through security. You'll need a photo ID and your flight boarding pass before they let you through security.

2. There is no size limit on non-liquid medicines, other than the normal limits on the size of your carry-on bag. The fiber gummies should be fine because they're not liquid. You don't need to put those in your 3-1-1 baggie.

3. Regarding the carry-on, the best answer is "maybe". As PPs have said, they may open your carry-on if something is flagged. Bulky items, items of odd shapes, and densely packed carry-ons seem more likely to be searched. If this happens, they will take your bag and ask you to come with them to a stand off to the side. They will unpack everything in the bag at that point.

I would suggest looking at TSA's guidelines (http://www.tsa.gov/311/) for the liquids issues. And also look the guidelines for your specific airline for size limits on carry-ons (e.g., dimensions).
