Questions About Adding On

I am a BLT owner with 445 points and we are considering purchasing more points. We go to Disney 2-4 times per year and are now interested in staying in 1 BR instead of studios. I have a few questions:
*We love BLT but are considering VWL. What thoughts and perspectives can be shared regarding a good "second" home resort, if at all? If we were to purchase at a second resort, how important is it to maintain the same UY as my previous contracts?
I'm having trouble determining how many more points we would need. WHat techniques have been used to come up with a ballpark figure?
*We added on once directly through DVC but are considering exploring the resale market. Thoughts, suggestions and advice would be appreciated.

Anything else that one can think of would be welcome. I'm interested in getting as much information and perspectives as possible. Thanks for the help!

:)I would pick a second resort just like I did the first one--where do you love to stay. I would definitely get the same UY, just to ease keeping up with things. However other people have said that it is not really that difficult. A different UY may be beneficial say if your current UY is DEC and you want to buy at BWV for food and Wine which is in Oct. A Dec UY would not be a wise choice since you would want the UY for BWV to be right before you travel, incase you have to cancel and get into "holding status or something". I would only do a different UY in a situation where I knew it was going to be a certain week or month for several years. If you want to do AK concierge then you need to own there, want to stay at VWL at Christmas then you need to own there.

A common suggestion here is to purchase 10-20% more points than you will actually need for the week. That will help with any future point reallocations. You can also do a transfer from one home resort into another but only once a year.

Adding on direct--no closing cost, direct pricing, instant gratification, get the UY you want without waiting on the perfect contract.
Adding on resale--good price, pay closing, wait to get the contract you want.

If you buy with a different UY, it will be considered an entirely different membership with a whole new number.

That means that you can't combine points between the contracts at 7 months without a transfer to book a single night. Not impossible, but to me (who had it at one point) not worth the hassle.

We did own VWL and BLT at one point but now own just BLT. When we add on again in the future, we will probably add on at one of the Epcot resorts. We do not like to take the buses and being able to stay at both the Epcot area and MK area allows us to go to three of the four parks without needing a rental car. Since we usually spend only 1/2 day at AK, we figure we could always just rent a car for a day during our trip for a visit to that and DTD.

Just today, I saw a BWV contract with my UY and really would love to buy it. But, I just added on more BLT points in August and really, the 210 we own is enough for us for the next few years.

It is just so hard, though, with the prices a bit less. Addonitis is SO hard to cure!!!!

Good luck!

Only if you keep the same UY. A different UY is not an add-on by Disney's definition and will result in an additional membership number.

When we added on our BLT points, we owned a small VWL contract with an Oct UY. WE wanted June UY but less than the 160 minimum at the time. Disney approved it and we were able to get 130 points with a different UY and paid no closing. It was a different membership but we did not pay the closing costs.

Of course, we sold the VWL contract a few months later and now everything is under one membership with the June UY, which is what we really wanted and should have bought to begin with.

Wilderness Lodge contracts expire in 2042. That would be something to consider since you own BLT with the longer ending date.

If you add on via resale, try to keep the same use year and make sure its titled the same way as your other contract(s).
