Question(s) about ATA locks on bass guitar case

I'm in the market for a new hardshell case for my bass guitar and see there are some with "ATA" locks that supposedly allow TSA agents to use a key they have to open the case for inspection. I realize that they will simply break traditional locks (and sometimes even the locks they have keys for), but my main concern is with baggage handlers and theft. I'm wondering if it's just as easy to go with a standard case and leave it unlocked. A thief would just steal the whole thiing, anyhow.

With all the newer security, is anyone keeping a better eye on baggage handlers?

Can something like a guitar or bass guitar be carried on board?

Policies with regard to guitars and other musical instruments as carry-on luggage are going to vary by airline. American, for example, has a specific exemption in its carry-on policy for guitars and allows them in the cabin even if their dimensions exceed the usual 45" limit PROVIDED that they fit in the overhead compartment.

Opinions will vary on the value of locking suitcases. IMO, the main value (if any) is that it prevents the bag from accidentally opening while it is being tossed around and there are other means to achieve that short of locking. Another minor value might be that if a potential thief was looking at two bags to open--one with a lock and one without--they might choose the unlocked bag. But something like a guitar is going to be easily identifiable just by looking at it, so that might not even apply in that case.

Thanks! If I can't carry it on I think I'll just leave it unlocked so at least the locks don't get broken.

Most airlines will let you carry on instruments that are too large for the overhead, IF you buy a seat for the instrument. I've seen cellos travel this way several times.

Conversely, something locked may mean the person has more valuables locked away and may choose to take the locked one. Honestly, it's not like the locks are hard to break open.
