My daughter has been accepted as a taught postgraduate student at the University of Leeds. She will begin working on her masters next September.

We have been looking at housing possibilities and keep running into something about needing a UK television license. I'd appreciate any information you can provide on this. Is this similar to a cable television charge? Does everyone need this license or just students? You help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

every individual residence must have a tv licence if they watch live television, all the details are found here http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/. There is a special section on students here http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/students-aud1/

if your daughter shares a house with other students she'll be able to share the cost of the license. If she has her own separate accomodation then she has to have her own licence. You can watch 'freeview' television in the UK without incurring additional costs above the licence http://www.freeview.co.uk/Channels. Cable or satellite television incurs an additional fee dependant on the channels subscribed to.

its also worth mentioning you still need a licence if you watch TV via the internet - so even if you don't have a TV and watch on a laptop they might come looking

You only need a TV licence for a laptop if you watch live TV on it, you dont need one for on demand tv such as bbc iplayer . To be honest I didnt know that you could watch "Live" TV on the internet.:)

Copied from the TV Licence page:

You don’t need a TV Licence if :
You don’t watch or record television programmes as they’re being shown on TV – on any device
If you don’t watch or record television programmes, or you only stream TV programmes online after they’ve been broadcast – through on-demand services like YouTube, BBC iPlayer and 4oD – you don’t need to be covered by a
TV Licence.

Well since everyone else has already helped you with the info, I will simply congratulate your daughter.

I hope her British experience is one she will look back on fondly in years to come. :goodvibes

I know you can watch I player live.

I have an app on my iPhone which allows me to stream tv to my phone, I believe this also works online, infact I know it dos because I watched the England games on it at work last year on my laptop in the shop!

Feralpeg- congrats to your daughter, how long will she be inth UK for?

Thank you, everyone! This really helps. I am totally freaked out about her going so far from home. I'm afraid we'll forget something and she'll get sent home! lol!

T16Gem, it is a one year program. She'll do three semesters back to back. Unless I can manage a trip over, I won't see her for a year. :scared1:

She is so excited about this. She has always wanted to visit the UK and the chance to study there is a dream come true. She will be working on her masters in Medieval History. She hopes to teach at the college level eventually or in a boarding school in the UK. Of course, that all depends on whether she'll be allowed to stay in the country.

I must say, since she is determined to travel far from home, I am so glad it is to the UK. I've met many people from the UK since I moved to the Orlando area and everyone is always so friendly. Thanks again for your help!

Congratulations to your daughter. Sounds like a fascinating subject to be studying too.
I hope she'll have the chance to travel around and see the rest of the UK whilst she's here.

Congratulations for your DD :goodvibes I'm at Leeds university at the moment and will be in my third year when your DD is over here. If you have any questions on Leeds or the surrounding area just PM me as I will be happy to answer them :thumbsup2 It is a great city but i'm biased as I live here :upsidedow

if you have a tv in a communal area area of a halls you are not required to have a tv licence
If watching on a laptop (most will do it this way ) you can watch live as long as its not plugged into the mains any recorded can be viewed no problem
iplayer/sesaw( a fee for seesaw is payable so not may students will use it)
Then again with study and going out think there wont be much time to watch tv
