question regarding renting points

My husband and I are looking into renting points to stay at BCV or WLV for 7 days. How many points do we need to do this? We are looking at next summer to rent. Im clueless about all this but ive heard so much about renting points it seems like a cheaper thing to do. AND do you have to stay in the villas or can you stay in a regular room?. any help is appreciated.
 
Well points for weekends are double than those during the weekdays and points are different depending on what month you travel in. You do have to stay in the villas at Wilderness Lodge and can't use vacation points to stay in the regular rooms. To know exactly how much it is going to cost, figure out your dates, months, and type of unit you want, studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom. and go to:

go through everything you would want and at the bottom it states how many points your stay is going take. ( you will see how much more Fri/ Sat are). Than, simply add an zero to the end ( that is avg. 10.00), It may be a little more/ less depending on how much you pay per point. If you feel like doing this

You can also just click on the DVC point charts link at the top of this page, click on the resort and calculate the points.

You don't HAVE to stay in villas, but they are much nicer and less expensive than a regular Disney hotel room. You have all of the benefits of staying onsite (extra hours, free parking at the theme parks, transportation, etc.).

There are two "downsides." One is you will not have daily housekeeping, although you can get it for an additional fee. The other is you will probably end up wanting to buy a DVC membership. ;)

ok i checked the calander and it says i need 134 points for the time i would go. Each point costing an avg. of $10 . DOes this mean for a week i would pay $1340 for a villa at the WL?

Yes, if you find a seller to rent you points at $10 per pt (average rental price) and you need 134 pts., yes, you would pay the seller $1340.

ps.
Fyi: if you are renting for Wilderness Lodge and it is more than 7 months before you travel date, you need to rent from somebody who owns at Wilderness Lodge, if it is within the 7 month window, it doesn't matter where the owners home resort is.
 
One more questions - if you rent points, do you have to pay any kind of taxes (like a reg. room - 6.5% resort and 11.5% county tax).

so ideally is it cheaper to rent points rather than go through disney???? Im just lost. we looked into buying into the vacation club. suppose you pay 15k and it gives you 130 points a year you pay an additonal 600 in dues. does it actually pay its self off?

Really depends on so many things. In order to do your cost benefit analysis you need the purchase price (incl. all costs paid to own the contract such as closing costs, etc.), current maint. fees, projected rate of increase of maint. fees (just a guess really) and length of contract. Add all upfront costs, add in maint. fees you expect to pay over length of contract divide by number of pts. and then divide by number of years you will have use of those pts.

Certainly if you buy high and sell low in a few years buying will not be a good move for you. If you're in it for the long term it would probably be better to buy, IMO.

We found it to be cheaper to buy our own contract. Esp. since I doubt very much if in say 2020 the going rate for renting pts. will still be $10 a pt as some sellers are renting for $12 per pt or more and people are buying.
