I have enough Skymiles in my account for a free ticket. I want to use them to buy a ticket for my son. Would I have to transfer the miles to his account (which might make it not worthwhile), or can I just book the ticket under my account and list his name as the traveler?

Thank you!

You buy it with your account and list his name as the traveler. There are major fees to transfer miles (found this out when I tried to by hubby's ticket).

I've booked tickets for friends, you just book it with their name from your account.

You can always check the rules for frequent flyer programs on your airline's website:

http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/program-rules-conditions.html

Miles may be redeemed for Award Tickets in the name of passengers other than the SkyMiles member, but Award Tickets are nontransferable once issued. Members are prohibited from selling or bartering Award Tickets.

I don't know of any FF program where you cannot use your miles to buy a ticket for someone else.
