I have a new laptop. (:cool1:)
I just received (as a hand-me-down gift!!! () a
wireless router!

I have not a clue what to do next....It has a cd....and lots of ports that I dont know what goes in them....
should I just put in the cd and see what happens??

I DO have a co-worker's hubby that could come by sometime this week to help me....but , sure would like to do it myself with some Diser help.....

The CD will direct you. You will need a cable to connect your modem to the wireless router.

How exactly you do the following will depend on the router but here are some important steps that will be needed to keep your router secure:

1. Change the default administrator password
2. Turn off universal plug and play (uPNP)
3. Make sure you have WPA or WPA2 encryption turned on
4. Make the encryption key at least 20 pseudo-random characters. You can get a pseudo-random character string from this site. Just copy the first 20 characters in the middle box (63 random printable ASCII characters). Every time the page loads it is recreated, the time I loaded it the first 20 characters were Gym:i09%UCh]>hA3e-1X

Of course you will need to keep this sting somewhere other then on your computer so you can reenter it later or for anyone who is visiting and wants to use your computer.

I have to disagree. First get the system working and then worry about changing passwords and using WPA or WPA2 encryption. Either of these will create a secure network so that your neighbors can't use your network. But for a novice setting up a network they can be problematic. Get comfortable with the workings of the wireless router and then work on security.

Well, I guess I forgot to emphasise that I am computer and you name it , illiterate....
I appreciate your comments....thank you
I will wait for co-worker's hubby to help me.
It is a D-Link, DIR-615.
