Hi everyone!

I'm relatively new to photography (well, GOOD photography anyway) and I'm trying to read up on as much as I can so that I can get more professional shots. So far, I'm doing pretty good but one of the things I really want is a new lens.

My camera is a Canon S2 IS, which I bought in 2006. A lot of people have recommended getting a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens for it but I'm not sure if I need a lens adapter or not? :confused3 This is my first digital camera...my old Canon used film and the whole lens comes right off so you can just put on whatever lens you want. On my S2, the lens ring comes off, but the lens itself doesn't. I'm assuming that an adapter is needed, and although the adapter is relatively low priced, I'd rather not spend money that I don't need to (so I can save up for the lens!)

TIA!

Lenses such as the one you desccribe are only usable on digital SLR cameras. The S2 IS is a point and shoot digital camera so it cannot use other lenses than the one it came with. Cameras such as the Canon XT, XTi, XSi, 30D, 40D, 5D, 1D, etc can use this lens, but the S2 only has options for such things as closeup lens adapters (attached on the removable ring that you describe) or some other oddball accessories that may or may not help you.

Wow I did not know that.... that sucks! Thanks for letting me know though! I'm glad I found this out before I spent the money on the lens! I would have been even more upset!

Do you have any examples of a "closeup lens adapter" that I could look into? Like any particular brands I should look into or is it pretty much pointless?

There are a couple that I know of. The wide converter WC-DC58A or tele converter TC-DC58B. Amazon has them both. Just look here:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-WC-DC58A-Converter-Digital-Camera/dp/B0009NEUOK

and if you scroll down the page, it also shows the tele converter.

It does suck that you can't get interchangable lenses for the S2 as I also have the S2 as my backup to my DSLR and I still love that camera. It has done an exceptional job for me in so many situations.

As far as the usefulness of the wide converter and tele converter, I'm not sure how good they are. The Amazon site has some reviews, but if you google the part numbers (WC-DC58A and TC-DC58B) you may find other sites that have reviewed their usefulness. I am also not sure if you need some sort of adapter in order to use these.

One good thread to check out is the Canon S3/S5 users thread. It started as an S3 thread with S2 and S1 users thrown in an dspread out to cover the S5 when it came out as well. Alot of great info in there. It is here:

I have the Canon S5. I purchased a less expensive (non-Canon) i.e., cheapo lens adapter/telephoto lens for that camera.

I should have paid more attention to this site:

http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2tele.html

See if that is what you are looking for. You can purchase a telephoto lens for the S2; whether it meets your expectations is another question.

I suggest the one Canon makes for this camera, if you choose to go that route.
