We're planning a trip to NYC to see some plays and I have more flight choices than I realized. I can get cheaper fares into Westchester County or Newark airport than LaGuardia. For those knowledgeable what are the pros and cons?

Thanks.

Are you renting a car? If so, Newark is the way to go...it's only about a 20 minute drive into the city.

No...No driving for me. We live in the Keys and I'm already enough of a fish out of water when visiting the 'real world' without adding driving to the scenerio. We'll be staying in Manhattan, probably Times Square with all the other tourists.;)

LaGuardia airport is in Queens and I believe JFK is too. Those are the closest to Manhatten. Are you staying in NYC? What about taking a taxi to get you to the hotel if you are staying in NYC? Once in, you can easily take the subway to get to your destinations.

The others may be cheaper but they are not as close as LaGuardia and JFK.

I believe there is a bus/shuttle type thing you can take from Newark into the City. I'll see if any of my coworkers know about it. If you want to save money, staying at a hotel in Secaucus or Weehawken is a good idea.

Either way - you are probably going to have to hire a car service or take a cab to your hotel. The airports in NYC aren't in Manhattan. They are on the outskirts. I prefer JFK over Lag or Newark - I think its just a nicer airport.

ETA: There are alternatives by way of public transportation - but with a lot of luggage and a new environment - I would take a car service over subway or bus

We'll definately be using a car service and once we're in the area of Broadway we'll be set for what we're going to be doing.

I keep getting Westchester County airport as an option...This must be further out meaning bigger hassle?

I would definitely go with Newark if the difference between that and LGA and JFK is huge. The distance is pretty much the same. As for Westchester -never heard of it - so it's definitely not a big airport like the other 3 :)

Never been to the westchester airport - but it is probably going to be your furthest option. And depending on what time you land - you're not going to want to spend that extra time sitting in rush hour traffic

Newark is the equivalent of JFK in terms of getting to Manhattan - lots of transportation options. This is especially true for going to the West Side (where the theater district is).

LGA is a bit better than either, but it's not a big deal. I'd take whichever of the three has the best flight.

Westchester is a whole different ball game. Farther away, with many fewer transportation options. I'd only take if for a much better flight.

Westchester (Stewart) is a small airport. I don't know much about it.

Stewart Airport is just west of Newburgh NY in Orange County, it's not the same as Westchester Airport.

Westchester Airport is in White Plains area - you would probably need car service to get to Midtown (you could get a cab to the Metro North station but that would be a pain being from out of town and having luggage, etc.).

Westchester County Airport is about 26 miles from Manhattan. There is transportation available to/from there in the form of limo services. It's not quite as convenient to Manhattan in that regard as Newark, but it's a much smaller (and hence more user friendly) airport than Newark, which is a crowded, noisy zoo.

Westchester is a small airport... north of the city. If it were me I would chose Newark(but hey I am a new york girl by birth..) It really is an easy breezy trip into the city form Newark. You can catch a Transbridge bus(they have a website transbridgebuslines I think) Nice Clean Safe buses. You will be dropped off at Port Authority- midtown. If that is where you are staying that is an easy way to go. Now if you are uncomfortable with the whole city thing at first- go with a car service. Not a big deal I think though you would pay at least $50. But for safety and simplicity it might be a good way for you to go if you are going alone. If you are with someone- really the bus is a piece of cake I take it into the city alone no problem.

Newark and JFk airports are total zoo's. JFK is like a small city, large and confusing! The good news is that generally the flights to Newark tend to be a bit cheaper. I would sooner WALK to my destination than fly in to Newark though....I HATE that airport.

Now Laguardia I like. Easy to navigate, close to NYC.

White Plains is a tiny commuter airport north of the city and certainly not worth the extra driving.

Fly into Newark and take NJ transit into the city. It lets you off at penn station (34th and 7th) and it takes about 20 minutes. Can't beat the convenience.

Count me in as another vote for Newark. It's an easy trip to the city from there and although I've never flown into/from JFK, I know a lot of people who don't particularly like it. Whatever you choose, good luck and have fun when you go. :thumbsup2
