Question RE: Flights into NYC

Stewart Airport is just west of Newburgh NY in Orange County, it's not the same as Westchester Airport.

That is what I THOUGHT and my co-worker said they are the same. SIlly me for believing him!

Well, I'm certainly not an expert but if I fly into Newark, I usually take the train (NJ transit) into NYC (Penn station). From there, I take a taxi to my destination in Manhattan - usually mid-town or Upper East-side. Seems like a lot of trouble but it's not. I think the cost (taxi) from Newark to mid-town might be around $40-$50. By train/taxi it's usually $20 or less (I think.)
I took the shuttle once - never again!

If I fly into LaGuardia, I'll take a taxi or towncar.

White Plains is a tiny commuter airport north of the city and certainly not worth the extra driving.

Yes, certainly, bigger is always better, and all "commuter" airports have direct flights to places like Chicago and Atlanta.

Newark has the Airlink up and running now. For a few dollars you can take NJ Transit directly into Penn Station in NYC--no transfers. From there you can transfer to the 1-2-3-9 train, the A-C-E train, or the N-R train. Or you can get a cab. Or you can walk.

It's very easy and in all honesty no further than LGA or JFK. And IMHO it's not a zoo--no more so than LGA is anyhow.

Take the Newark flights. Right outside the terminal, all the way to the left, you can hop on the Olympia Trailways bus right to Port Authority - NYC midtown- and be blocks away from the theatre district. The bus tickets are $16 each way. 45 minutes right into Manhattan.

I never take flights at JFK or LaGuardia if I can help it. Transportation is soooo much cheaper to/from Newark than a SINGLE fare to the other two airports, as is the TIME spent traveling into the city. Even when the flight is cheaper at JFK, by the time I average in the transpo, it works out cheaper getting a Newark flight.

You won't need a car service this way, unless there are many of you & it works out cheaper to take a cab from Newark. Once you are in the city, you can easily take cabs, busses or subways.

Westchester!:thumbsup2 We fly from here whenever possible. It's a small airport (only 4 gates). We probably average 10 minutes getting off the plane, getting our bags, then leaving.

I would do this too. It is a 30 minute train ride to Grand Central ( East 42)from White plains just to give you an idea. Not far at all and LaGuardia was a nightmare in August when we got back from Disney.

Are you sure the flight was into Westchester (White Plains) and not Orange County (newburgh)? Newburgh has at least one low cost operator and it would be a hike to manhattan. I used to always price out of White Plains (closest to where I lived in Connecticut), but never flew from there because it was too expensive. I think you'd have to do car service from White Plains and it would probably be about 35 minutes away (give or take a little).

Newark and JFK are about the same distance to Manhattan. Since Times Square is on the West Side, Newark is convenient. I never found Newark that hard to fly into. Flying out of it has been more of a hassle. Not the getting there or anything, but we flew out Continental and had a heck of a line to get through security. I have never seen anything like it - we thought we would miss our flight despite having gotten there an hour and a half in advance.

Westchester is a small airprt right on the CT/NY border. It is a very nice airport in terms of ease of getitng around it, because it is not big. It is, however, not located conveniently close to any kind of public transportaiton. To get from Westchester to mid-town Manhattan, you would either neither to hire a car service to pick you up at the airport and drive you to yor hotel and then pick you up at your hotel and rive yo back to the airport OR you would need to get a cab at the airport to take you to the nearest railroad station and take a train into Grand Central, at which point you could walk or cab to your hotel, depending on where you were staying and how much luggage you were schlepping. The price difference savings of going to a "further out" airport would probably be negated if you consider the cost of transporting yourself into NYC.

Stewart airport basically only takes small corporate jets. I've picked my fiance up there once... it's basically the equivalent of going to Teterboro airport... that is extremely rare.

Land in Newark, take the path train to Penn Station, and take a cab/subway to where your hotel is.

Westchester (Stewart) is a small airport. I don't know much about it.

Westchester is not Stewart....

It is on the border of White Plains and Port Chester, very close to the CT state line.

You are looking at about 45 minute ride on a good day - 1 to 1 1/2 on a regular day.

It is a nice, small, easy to maneuver airport, but would not be ideal for you considering you will not be driving.

I remember from living in Ct that Newburgh had one low cost operator that flew to just a couple of places two or three times a week. We left CT a year and a half ago. It is possible that it doesn't fly anymore.

I don't know how anybody finds a fare for Westchester (White Plains) that is cheaper than a LaGuardia flight. We were always stuck making the drive to LGA, JFK or Newark because the Westchester flights were two to three times as expensive. I priced it for a trip to Connecticut this past summer and it was still outragreous.

I used Sidestep as my fare search engine and Air Tran to Westchester is coming in at 184 versus 217 to Newark and 235 to LaGuardia for my days so for whatever reason that's the way it is (X 4 that can add up but still the transportation costs probably negate the savings).

I did see Newburgh one time as well and just discounted it as the times were't so good for me.

Thanks to everybody!

truly wasn't necesary to be snide...the OP was asking for help from people who are familiar with the airports. Republic Airport on Long Island is also considered a commuter airport but has had Air Force One land there on numerous occasions as well as large jets carrying hockey and basketball teams bound for Nassau Coliseum..

I have actually used Westchester aiport many times when we landed our chopper there to cover local news stories and pick up reporters etc. (LOVE the warm cookies they have waiting for pilots and crew and such in the terminal).

Anywho, IMHO it's not worth the schlep to get to NYC and the OP may find choices somewhat limited as far as arrival/departure dates/times.

Newark is almost always cheaper (always a good thing!). However I have always found it to be irritatingly busy so I steer clear.

I tend towards LGA most of the time when flying home to NY because my family lives on Long Island and they have to drive and pick me up. So I guess a lot of it has to do with familiarity.
