I need to buy a new range and want to do all my homework before I hit the store. With that ...

Other than the position of the controls, is there a difference between slide-in and free-standing ranges? Can a free-standing range be used in lieu of a slide-in? Or would you not be able to use a free-standing range instead of a slide-in because of ventilation issues?

Any advice, as always, is much appreciated ...

We have a slide-in in our island. We don't have a vent hood so we had to get a downdraft fan - which we hardly ever use.

In further research, I found the answer to my question.

If anyone is curious, it is that free-standing ranges have finished sides, whereas slide-ins are made to be flush with counters, so the sides aren't as finished. Apparently, ventiliation is not an issue.

OT but is your range a JennAir? Do you like it? I need to replace a 22 yr old drop-in range & my only option is the JennAir with the downdraft fan.

Thanks for your help!
