Morning all,
Question, I have searched some labor laws and wanted to know if this was actually true, that an employer does NOT have to give you raises or time off legally if they don't want to. I'm asking because my DH has been with the same company for six years and has never received a raise and gets 10 days off a year (you can use them as you chose as vacation, sick or personal). At my company, you pretty much are guaranteed a raise every year, never more than 3% and get 10 vacation, 10 sick and 4 personal the first year you start! It's just frustrating for DH and myself, I feel very bad for him. (And yes, he's tried looking for jobs, but his field is very competitive and no luck yet). DH and his co-workers have talked to boss about these issues but with no success. Thanks for any info provided.

Raises are not required by law. There are laws regarding overtime pay.

I think the only required law for time off is the Family and Medical Leave Act (which is unpaid).

Unless controlled by some sort of union rules, companies are generally free to set pay and time off rules themselves.

If an employee feels that he is worth more than the employer is paying him, it's really up to that employee to find another job that compensates him with the pay he feels he's worth... if there's not another job that pays more, then the presumption has to be that the current job is paying a fair wage for the work done.

If the company is paying under the market value for that job and the benefits (time off included) are not fair, then the company should find that it is difficult to keep employees.

If your DH has tried looking for jobs unsuccessfully (does that mean that there are few openings for his skills, or that no one else is paying more than his current employer?), that's an indication that his current employer is paying a fair market rate salary at this point.

He's lucky he hasn't had to take a pay cut like a lot of people here.

Its true that employers are not required to grant raises and offer additional PTO (Paid time off), but to keep good employees and attract new ones they should be making the company's benefits package attractive. My company gives merit reviews every June and they always give some form of a raise. It really depends on your performance, attendance, and attitude.

Nope, raises are not required, nor is time off required. My mother is a manager of a restaurant. I have to say that her boss is very generous with her pay, but she gets no time off. She has only been out sick 2 days in the past 7 years and took off one week when her mother died and one weekend when her sister died.
