Question on RCI/Disney

My husband's Aunt wants to give us her RCI Timeshare. We would just take over the fees. She owns a Red Week in Hawaii. The fees would be about $700 a year. I understand now that with RCI you can get the DVC Villas at Disney. A couple of questions.

1. Does anyone know if this would get us a studio or 1 or 2 bedroom villa.

2. Does anyone who owns RCI know if you can convert them membership from weeks into points.

I think this would be a great deal since we usually go to Disney every other year and have been renting points the last 2 times.

Also, can you use them for cruises and if so, what would that include and for how many people.

Thanks Much.

Not familiar with RCI but I have read that many RCI owners have had success trading into a Disney Resort...Not sure if the below link would help you or not...

RCI

you can go to TUG2.net and get unbiased advice about the particular timeshare. Getting a "Free" timeshare can be a great--or NOT so great. There are many things to consider before assuming this timeshare. And assuming a timeshare for purposes of trading into DVC is not a sure bet by any means, and certainly not for years into the future. Elaine

Thanks for all the replies. I have gone over to the TUG website. We are trying to get more info on the timeshare. Right now it seems like a good deal. We had always thought of getting a timeshare and now we could get one for just assuming the yearly fees.

be careful. some "red" weeks are redder than others...

The fees would be about $700 a year.

don't forget to consider that RCI charges about $100ish per year for membership and another $180 or so per trade.

edited to add: DVC also charges a $95 fee for trades in from RCI...but it can still be a great deal if it works out...

most of the inventory available for trade is SSR and OKW, but other resorts sometimes show up.

depends on trade power. 2BRs are possible if you have enough pull.

2. Does anyone who owns RCI know if you can convert them membership from weeks into points.

i'm useless on this question.

pts for cruises are generally a bad deal.

lots of timeshares are currently available for "just assuming the yearly fees." keep in mind that you will be on the hook forever until you find someone else to pay those yearly fees...whether you've got a "tiger" trader or a dog.

and exchanging can be a tricky game where the rules change from time to time...a couple of years ago an RCI trader could not get DVC...in a few more years, DVC may end its contract with RCI...will you be able to travel to HI to use the timeshare if its trade value goes in the tank?

definitely look for more information over at TUG.

To echo others' sentiments: getting this timeshare "for DVC" is probably not a great idea in the long run---too much uncertainty. Taking this timeshare because you think the idea of timeshare *might* be a good one is perhaps not so bad---but it all depends on the interval you are getting.

I wouldn't get it to trade into DVC, esp for HI. What resort and week or seasons is it? HI as a rule tends to trade well but as noted, some are better than others, esp early Dec being very low. Fees in HI tend to be very high, is it a studio or larger?

I have my husband trying to get more info, but he is out of town at a convention. This is what I told him what we need to know:

1. Resort it is at.
2. What week she has.
3. What size is it - (Studio/1 or 2 bedroom)

Is there anything else we should ask?

That should get you started. The other question is if they have an existing exchange membership that they can transfer to you. One thing to note is that some of the MX resorts have VERY high transfer fees, the one we're staying at in Cabo now has transfer fees generally over $2K if I understand correctly.

I tried to trade RCI for Disney and it was impossible. You should probably just use it for Hawaii...YMMV

Ithink you've misunderstood the OP. However, I've traded in to DVC a number of times through both II and RCI. It's easily possible but depends on a lot of variables including resort, unit size, time of year, etc. We have 8 units at BCV/BWV combined for Sept in 1 & 2 BR units for an extended family trip all gotten through exchange. Still, the difficulty of trading in to DVC has little, if any, effect on the decision because the OP would be trading out not trading in. DVC HI won't be open by the time the points in question expire this November (Dec UY) if I understand correctly. Certainly a RCI deposit isn't the greatest option but it's much better than losing their points completely. Of course we don't know how many points are in question and that would definitely affect my recommendations. IF it's 100 or more, RCI is a viable option, if much less, likely better to try to use them for something else and even lose them rather than deposit with RCI.
