Hi. We are going to florida in Oct and it will be our first trip with our son. Consequently we have never bought food for a preschooler in the states before. Can anyone tell if you can get my son's favourite spread out there, if not I will bring some with me. It is called Marmite and is a vegetarian yeast extract spread. If not I will bring a jar with us. Thanks

Because there are so many UK expats in the Orlando area, many of the supermarkets there have begun to carry Marmite in their special "British foods" sections, but it isn't a sure thing that you will find it, because Americans won't touch the stuff. Your best bet is to carry it with you. Bring a factory-sealed new jar.

Blackcurrant juice is also something that is very rare in the States, and usually can only be found in the "British foods" section of a supermarket that has one.

Also, if he eats soft-boiled eggs, you should know that many US restaurants will balk at serving them, and especially serving them to a child. Some places will refuse to serve them to you, as the USDA has for years been advising restaurants that they are unsafe because of salmonella.

I wouldn’t count on it being available. I know when my cousin travels from Australia he brings a whole bag of packaged snacks that the kids normally eat (and some for me as well)...Florida grocery's tend to limit themselves to food that will be purchased in bulk due to humidity causing low shelf time

Thanks for that. Marmite is so popular here they have jars in a variety of sizes so I'll just take a new smallest jar with me

Ok, "Donald Duck"( heehee) How do you prepare this intriguing Marmite? Is it a sandwich spread like a nut butter? Maybe they'd have it in the England area of Epcot's world showcase??? Just bring some in case you cant find it.
Have Fun!!!!!

Oh my goodness. I have never even heard of this stuff. While I am sure it is very good, it would most probably only be available in the gourmet/international aisle of the supermarket. If your child depends on it, I would not plan on getting it here!

I am sure y'all will be able to find many yummy food while you are in WDW, but it is so nice to have the comfort foods from home once in a while when traveling.

I say, better safe than sorry! Hope y'all have a magical time!

What does marmite taste like? Is it like vegemite in Australia?

yes, marmite is akin to vegemite

Marmite came first, they taste slightly different (I'm sure more different to a person who actually likes either of them, lol). They are yeast extract spreads, very salty.

Hi Miss Piggy/Polyanna/Dory ;) (I was awake for a while last night trying to work out who my husband is :rotfl: )
Marmite is spread like any other spread, on top of normal butter. It is quite strong so not much is needed, which is why it should be ok to take the smallest jar. It is the same as Vegemite from Oz, and like Vegemite it has no animal ingrediants, unlike Bovril which tastes similar, but is made from beef (just incase you get bovril out there). As a side note, if you are able to get marmite out there it is worth it as it is quite healthy. There is no fat and one serving contains recommended daily intake of B vitamins and floic acid.
As the advertising slogan goes, you either love it or you hate it.

There you are everything you want to know about marmite ;)

Curious, when y'all come all the way from England, how long do ya stay at WDW? Not only do you have the long flight, but also jet lag, right? I bet it makes planning your trip even harder.

Been living in the states 30 yesars and I still love marmite my DD calls it Tarmite says that's what it looks like , smells like and tastes like. But that was how OI felt about peanut butter and I still hate maple syrup and put salt on my pancakes!! I'd bring the marmite chances are you wont find it. Also don't forget squash is a vegetable here. Closest thing to British squash is Koolaid.

People from the UK are big on holidays abroad. Generally speaking, when anyone from the UK has a long haul holiday we tend to go for 2 weeks, unless it is to Australasia or the Far East which would be a lot longer. In the UK we have more annual leave entiltlement then in the US (but a lot less public holidays) so it is easier to go abroad. It has never been that popular to take holidays within the UK due to weather and price (believe it or not) so most holidays are taken abroad. The US is a very popular long haul destination if we don't want to go short haul somewhere in Europe. Jet lag is never really thought about really, we mostly suffer coming home (from the US that is, nearly always night flights from Florida).

Thanks for the insight. I guess I just thought about when we have been to Europe how horrible the jet lag was . . . but I guess you are right that coming this direction is not nearly as bad.

Hope you and your family have a magical vacation! :wizard:

I'm with your DD. Like all good emigrant parents, mine insisted on sticking with English breakfast foods all their lives, and we happily ate everything else, but none of us children would ever tolerate Marmite (FTR, I don't like peanut butter, either.) Yecch.

PS: My Dad didn't really care that much for Marmite either, at least not when I was young. It reminded him too much of wet, stinking battlefields. Marmite was a staple of British army rations in WW2.
